Agglomeration externalities and technical efficiency in French pig production Inra

Countries, regions and trade: on the welfare impacts of economic integration Inra
Behrens, K.; Gaigne, C.; Ottaviano, G.I.P.; Thisse, J.F..
We study the impact of falling international trade costs and falling national transport costs on the economic geography of countries involved in an integration process. Each country is formed by two regions between which labor is mobile, whereas there is no international mobility. Goods can be traded both nationally and internationally at positive, but different, costs. A decrease in trade costs and/or in transport costs has a direct impact on prices and wages in both countries. This allows us to account for the impact of changes in these parameters on the economic geography and welfare of each country. We show that, as trade barriers fall, the benefits of integration come after its costs. We also show that national transport policies are of the...

Dairy powder rehydration: influence of protein state, incorporation mode, and agglomeration Inra
Gaiani, C.; Schuck, P.; Scher, J.; Desobry, S.; Banon, S..
A simplified method to study rehydration was used on different dairy powders. The method involved dispersing powder in a stirred vessel equipped with a turbidity sensor. The changes of turbidity occurring during powder rehydration highlighted the rehydrationstage, and the influence of the proteins’ state on rehydration was clarified. Casein powders had a quick wetting time but very slow dispersion, making the totalrehydration process time-consuming. On the other hand, whey powders were found to have poor wettability but demonstrated immediate dispersion after wetting.Mixing casein (80%) and whey (20%) before spray drying greatly improved rehydration time compared with casein powder; whereas mixing whey powder with casein powder at the same ratio after...

Dynamic NIR spectroscopy to monitor wheat product processing: a short review Inra
Kaddour, A. A.; Cuq, B..

Is remoteness a locational disadvantage? Inra
Behrens, K.; Gaigné, C.; Ottaviano, G.I.P.; Thisse, J.F.; INRA, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (FRA).
We study the impacts of changes in international trade and domestic transport costs on the internal geography of countries in the presence of geographical asymmetries. To do so, we develop a two-country four-region model in which one country has a region that exhibits a ‘geographical advantage’ in terms of better access to the other country’s markets. Our analysis reveals that, in equilibrium, the space-economies of the trading partners are interdependent and that agglomeration in one country reduces the occurrence of agglomeration in the other, thus showing that physical geography suffices to build strong connections between the two space-economies. We also show that remoteness need not be a geographical disadvantage since a landlocked region may well be...

Modeling the spatial structure of pig production in Denmark Inra
Larue, S.; Abildtrup, J.; Schmitt, B.; NARSC, North American Regional Science Council (USA).
In Denmark, the concentration of pig production is highest in the western part of the country. However, there may be even larger local differences in the number of pigs produced. In this study we analyze the determinants of the location of pig production in Denmark with particular focus on spatial externalities and the interaction between the location of pig production and upstream sector and slaughterhouses. It is the assumption that the location of slaughterhouses is influenced by the location of the primary producers, implying that this variable is endogenous, whereas the location of primary producers is independent of the location of slaughterhouses. This is due to the fact that transportation costs of pigs are paid by the cooperatives owning the...
