Background: Invasion of the mosquito salivary glands by Plasmodium is a critical step for malaria transmission. From a SAGE analysis, we previously identified several genes whose expression in salivary glands was regulated coincident with sporozoite invasion of salivary glands. To get insights into the consequences of these salivary gland responses, here we have studied one of the genes, PRS1 (Plasmodium responsive salivary 1), whose expression was upregulated in infected glands, using immunolocalization and functional inactivation approaches. The haematophagous bug Rhodnius prolixus has been a model system in insect physiology for a long time. Recently, several studies have been devoted to its sensory systems, including olfaction. However, few data are available on the basic organisation of the nervous system in this species. By means of neuronal backfills, histology, confocal microscopy and three-dimensional reconstruction methods, we have characterized the projection patterns of antennal sensory neurons within the central nervous system of this disease-vector insect. Arthropodes associés à la culture cotonnière au Tchad : ravageurs, prédateurs et parasites IRD

Les auteurs dressent la liste des arthropodes (acariens, diplopodes et insectes) préalablement signalés sur culture cotonnière au Tchad ou relevés par eux-mêmes au cours des années 1984 à 1987. Les études entreprises ont permis de recenser pour la première fois dans ce pays 51 espèces et 24 genres. Les principaux déprédateurs des organes fructifères sont les lépidoptères #Helicoverpa (=Heliothis) armigera, Diparopsis watersi, Earias biplaga$, alors que les chenilles de syllepte derogata constituent les déprédateurs phyllophages les plus importants. Les insectes piqueurs-suceurs majeurs sont les pucerons #Aphis gossypii$ et les aleurodes #Bemisia tabaci$. La plupart des données concernant les parasites au Tchad sont originales. (Résumé d'auteur)

Caractères de la faune de quelques milieux naturels sur sols ultramafiques en Nouvelle-Calédonie IRD

En Nouvelle-Calédonie, les particularités de la faune des milieux sur sols ultramafiques se traduisent par un endémisme local aux niveaux spécifique et générique. De grandes différences sont cependant observées selon le groupe taxonomique considéré. L'aire de plusieurs phytophages (#Lepidoptera$, #Coccoidea$, #Thysanoptera$ gallicoles...) est logiquement restreinte aux zones sur péridotites dont leurs plantes-hôtes sont endémiques. Ecdysteroids are polyhyclroxylated steroids that function as molting hormones in insects. 20-Hydroxyecdysone (a 27C-ecdysteroid) is classically considered as the major steroid hormone of Drosophila melanogaster, but this insect also contains 28C-ecdysteroids. This arises from both the use of several dietary sterols as precursors for the synthesis of its steroid hormones, and its inability to dealkylate the 28C-phytosterols to produce cholesterol. In insects, biogenic amines have been shown to play an important role in olfactory plasticity. In a first attempt to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms, we report the molecular cloning and precise expression pattern of a newly identified octopamine/tyramine-receptor-encoding gene in the antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae (MbraOAR/TAR). A full-length cDNA has been obtained through homology cloning in combination with rapid amplification of cDNA ends/polymerase chain reaction; the deduced protein exhibits high identities with previously identified octopamine/tyramine receptors in other moths. Cloning of an octopamine/tyramine receptor and plasticity of its expression as a function of adult sexual maturation in the male moth Agrotis ipsilon Inra

In the male moth Agrotis ipsilon behavioural response and antennal lobe (AL) neuron sensitivity to the female-produced sex pheromone increase with age and juvenile hormone (JH) level. We recently showed that the neuromodulator, octopamine (OA), interacts with JH in this age-dependent olfactory plasticity. To further elucidate its role, we cloned a full cDNA encoding a protein that presents biochemical features essential to OA/tyramine receptor (AipsOAR/TAR) function. CORONOSTOMA GAUTUNI n. sp. et C. DENTATA n. sp. (OXYUROIDEA, NEMATODA), parasites de Diplopodes : considérations sur le genre CORONOSTOMA IRD

La description de deux nouvelles espèces de CORONOSTOMA Rao, 1958, parasites de Diplopodes, provenant, l'une du Burkina-Faso (C. GAUTUNI n. sp.) et l'autre de Madagascar (C. DENTATA, n. sp.), permet de préciser les caractères du genre CORONOSTOMA, lequel renferme ainsi quatre espèces. Ce genre, dont les femelles sont nématophages, diffère profondément de tous les autres OXYUROIDEA parasites d'Arthropodes par la forme conique des amphides, par l'absence de valve dans le bulbe et par la structure du stoma de la femelle. Nous interprétons l'absence du réceptacle séminal antérieur ou des deux réceptacles séminaux comme l'adaptation à l'haplodiploïdie des Oxyures. (Résumé d'auteur)

Hedonic taste in Drosophila revealed by olfactory receptors expressed in taste neurons Inra

Taste and olfaction are each tuned to a unique set of chemicals in the outside world, and their corresponding sensory spaces are mapped in different areas in the brain. This dichotomy matches categories of receptors detecting molecules either in the gaseous or in the liquid phase in terrestrial animals. Identification of differentially expressed genes in the hydrothermal vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata exposed to heat stress Inra

The deep-sea vent shrimp Rimicaris exoculata dominates the vagile megafauna at most vent sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This shrimp swarms around the hot end of the hydrothermal biotope where temperature can exceed its critical maximal temperature (33–38.5 ± 2 °C). It may therefore be subjected to a thermal regime that is assumed to be stressful for animals. In this study, we used a global transcriptomic approach by constructing suppression subtractive hybridization cDNA libraries in order to identify specific up- and down-regulated genes in R. exoculata exposed to a severe heat stress (1 h at 30 °C).
