Additional results and discussion to the paper: Asymmetric viability of reciprocal-cross hybrids between crested and marbled newts (Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus) Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; Jehle, R.; Bardakci, F.; Burke, T.; Wallis, G.P..
Hybridization between divergent lineages often results in reduced hybrid viability. Here we report findings from a series of independent molecular analyses over several seasons on four life stages of F1 hybrids between the newts Triturus cristatus and T. marmoratus. These two species form a bimodal hybrid zone of broad overlap in France, with F1 hybrids making up about 4% of the adult population. We demonstrate strong asymmetry in the direction of the cross, with one class (cristatus-mothered) making up about 90% of F1 hybrids. By analyzing embryos and hatchlings, we show that this asymmetry is not due to prezygotic effects, as both classes of hybrid embryos are present at similar frequencies, implicating differential selection on the two hybrid classes...

Allozymic variation and differentiation in the chilean blue mussel, Mytilus chilensis, along its natural distribution Genet. Mol. Biol.
Toro,Jorge E.; Castro,Grace C.; Ojeda,Johana A.; Vergara,Ana M..
Genetic differentiation in the Chilean blue mussel Mytilus chilensis (Hupé 1854) was investigated based on the variation in the allozyme frequencies of Pgm, Gpi, Icd, Me, Gsr, Lap and Pep in eight samples collected along 1800 km from Arauco (VIII Region) to Punta Arenas (XII Region). Despite the large geographic separations, values of Neis unbiased genetic distance, D (0.004-0.048) and standardised genetic variation among populations, Fst (0.011-0.055) were small. The levels of gene flow (Nm = 8) found in this study prevent the effect of differentiation among populations by genetic drift. This findings indicate that its long-lived planktotrophic larvae provides this species with considerable dispersal ability throughout its range which is favoured by the...

Diversité phénotypique dans la population d’anchois commun (Engraulis encrasicolus) du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Leseur, Floriane.
With the constant rising of the human population, it is essential to assess and manage the exploitation of the marine species for human consumption such as the anchovy of Bay of Biscay. Thanks to the PELGAS annual surveys, stocks of each species are estimated (biomass, repartition) and studies are undertaken to improve our knowledge about these species. Allozymic studies realized on the anchovy allowed to find a correlation between 2 alleles of the locus IDH and the habitat (depth). This allozyme has a key role in Krebs’ cycle, being speed limiting.. It enables to tolerate variations of temperature and dissolved oxygen. It would be interesting to do new research on variations in the anchovy’s environment and its migrations.

Genetic diversity and adaptability of two species of Mugilidae (Teleostei : Perciformes) of the Po river delta coastal lagoons ArchiMer
Papa, R; Nonnis Marzano, F; Rossi, V; Gandolfi, G.
Molecular polymorphisms (allozyme and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP)) were investigated in the mullet specie's Liza ramada and Liza saliens to determine levels of genetic variability and assess possible correlations between the population genetic structure and the specie's adaptability to shallow water environments. The thinlipped (L. ramada) and the sharpnose (L saliens) mullets are diadromous species-that enter coastal lagoons during early life stages to complete growth previous to sexual maturation. Bi-monthly samples (n = 30-50) were collected in the period 2000-2002 in different sites of the Sacca di Goro (Po river delta) and a nearby aquaculture lagoon (Valle Bertuzzi). Biochemical analyses were carried out by means of starch gel...

Genetic variability in three species of Gymnotus Linnaeus, 1758 (Gymnotiformes: Gymnotidae) from Caracu stream of the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Rezende,Judy Ruiz; Renesto,Erasmo; Zawadzki,Cláudio Henrique.
The genetic variability of three Gymnotus species from the Caracu stream, a small tributary of the left margin of Paraná River (Brazilian upper Paraná River floodplain), was estimated with data of 17 putative allozyme loci, which were obtained by using corn starch gel electrophoresis of 10 enzymatic systems: Aspartate aminotransferase (E. C. 2.6.1.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.118), Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.8), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-Lactate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.37), Superoxide dismutase (E. C. 1.15.1.1) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.14). The genetic diversity was estimated as He =...

Isozymic variability in a Brazilian collection of annatto (Bixa orellana L.) PAB
Carvalho,Jane Fiuza Rodrigues Portela de; Robinson,Ingrid Peters; Alfenas,Acelino Couto.
The objectives of this work were to optimize the isozyme electrophoresis technique for Bixa orellana, and use isozyme markers for a preliminary survey on the genetic variability in Brazilian annatto germplasm accessions. Collection consisted of seed samples from sixty open pollinated trees, representing two Northern and four Southern geographic provenances. The extraction, electrophoresis, and interpretation of annatto isozymes are described. Three out of the twenty-one identified isozyme loci were polymorphic in the collection. The percentage of polymorphic loci (P = 21.05) and the expected heterozygosity in annatto (H T = 0.064) were low, compared to other tropical woody species. A UPGMA phenogram, constructed with Nei's genetic distances, clearly...

Molecular identification of species of the Genus Euglossa Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Euglossini) Neotropical Entomology
López-Uribe,Margarita M.; Del Lama,Marco A..
Euglossine bees interact with more than 60 plant families of the Neotropical region. The richness and abundance of these bees have been intensively studied in different ecosystems using the methodology of capturing males with chemical baits. Females are poorly known for most of the species and morphological characters for their taxonomic classification have not yet been described. The purpose of this study was to use allozymes and restriction patterns of the mitochondrial regions 16S and Cyt b to identify species of Euglossa Latreille. Bees were collected while visiting Thevetia peruviana (Apocynaceae) flowers in five cities of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Three Euglossa species were identified among the 305 individuals collected. Euglossa cordata (L.)...

Preliminary study on genetic diversity of endemic and threatened species of Petunia (Solanaceae) Darwiniana
Villaron Franceschinelli,Edivani; Stehmann,João Renato; Melo-Silva,Carlos; Neiva Mesquita Neto,José.
Rare and narrowly endemic species are more vulnerable to extinction due to their restricted geographical distribution. the genus Petunia has 14 species and most of them are endemic to a restricted area. Four Petunia species that grow in Southern Brazil were studied: P. bonjardinensis, P. reitzii, P. integrifolia subsp. depauperata, and P. exserta. We presented a preliminary study on the genetic diversity of five populations of Petunia, using allozyme markers. For the genetic analyses, allozyme electrophoresis was carried out and eight enzyme systems were reliably scored. Standard measures of allozyme diversity were calculated. The highest genetic diversity and the highest fixation index was found in the two studied populations of P. bonjardinensis (P = 90,...

Relationships between sediments and tissue contamination and allozymic patterns in Hediste diversicolor (Polychaeta Nereididae) in the Pialassa lagoons (north Adriatic Sea) ArchiMer
Virgilio, M; Baroncini, N; Trombini, C; Abbiati, M.
An increasing number of investigations revealed that responses of populations to environmental stressors may be genetically dependent. Occurrence of genetic adaptation to high concentrations of heavy metals in Hediste diversicolor local ecotypes has also been hypothesised. Analyses of allozymic patterns are a promising tool for the genetic monitoring of environmental stressors. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the allozymic patterns of H. diversicolor could be affected by levels of contamination. Five sites were investigated: four in a polluted brackish habitat, the Pialassa lagoons, and a reference site in the Lamone estuary. Total mercury was used as a tracer of the overall level of contamination. Concentrations of mercury were quantified...
