Allozyme comparison of two populations of Rineloricaria (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from the Ivaí River, upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Limeira,Daniel M.; Renesto,Erasmo; Zawadzki,Cláudio H..
Two allopatric morphotypes of the genus Rinelocaria were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique: one morphotype, R. pentamaculata, from the Keller River in the middle stretch of the Ivaí River basin and the other, R. aff. pentamaculata, from the São João River in the upper portion of the Ivaí River basin. The morphotype from the São João River was collected upstream from the São João waterfall, which is about 80 m deep. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, which allowed to score 22 loci. Only loci Aat-2, Est-3 and Mdh-C showed polymorphism. The two samples differed in allele frequencies at the three polymorphic loci. The average expected heterozygosity for all loci was...

Allozyme differentiation of two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888 (Teleostei, Loricariidae) from the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Reusing,Ana Flávia; Renesto,Erasmo; Roxo,Fábio F.; Zawadzki,Cláudio H..
Allozyme electrophoresis was used to examine 12 enzymatic systems in two populations of the genus Neoplecostomus from the Paraná River basin. Samples of Neoplecostomus sp. 1 were collected in Paraitinguinha stream of the Tietê River basin, in the municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo State, and those of Neoplecostomus sp. 2 from São Domingos stream of the Rio Grande River basin, in the municipality of Muzambinho, Minas Gerais State. The genetic variability of the two populations was estimated by Nei's expected heterozygosity and was considered lower than average for populations of freshwater fish. The proportion of polymorphic loci was low (only 5.26% for the locus Idh). The low frequency of heterozygosity for both populations revealed a high fixation of...

Allozyme variation among three populations of the armored catfish Hypostomus regani (Ihering, 1905) (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from the Paraná and Paraguay river basins, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Zawadzki,Cláudio H.; Renesto,Erasmo; Peres,Maria Dolores; Paiva,Suzana.
Three Brazilian populations of the armored catfish Hypostomus regani (Ihering, 1905) were sampled, one from the Corumbá Reservoir in Goiás state, another from the Itaipu Reservoir in Paraná state and a third from the Manso Reservoir in Mato Grosso state. Allozyme electrophoresis was used to establish the genetic structure of the species, with the analysis of liver, heart and muscles tissues allowing the scoring of 25 loci from 14 enzymatic systems. Although no diagnostic loci were found, some exclusive rare alleles were recorded for the three populations. The genetically most similar populations were those from Corumbá and Itaipu, and the most distant were the populations from Manso and Corumbá. The allozyme data showed three structured populations...

Allozyme variation and sociogenetic structure of Polistes satan Bequaert 1940 colonies (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gaspar,Jane Cristina Wehren; López-Uribe,Margarita María; Del Lama,Marco Antônio.
We collected 40 colonies of the wasp Polistes satan in November 1993 (Population A = 23 colonies) and October 1995 (Population B = 17 colonies) from the town of Delfinopólis in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Pupae from these nests were used to assess allozyme variation and genetic relatedness among nestmates. Of the 24 gene loci sampled six showed allozyme polymorphism (Est-2, Pgm-1, 6Pgd, Hk-1, Idh and Pep-A) and all loci except Idh were at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Populations A and B showed distinct intra-loci heterozygosities, but similar average heterozygosity over all loci. Significant inter-population differentiation (Fst = 0.051; p < 0.01) was detected, probably due to genetic drift driven by bottlenecking that occurred due to the first...

Biochemical comparison of two Hypostomus populations (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from the Atlântico Stream of the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ito,Kennya F.; Renesto,Erasmo; Zawadzki,Cláudio H..
Two syntopic morphotypes of the genus Hypostomus - H. nigromaculatus and H. cf. nigromaculatus (Atlântico Stream, Paraná State) - were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, attributing the score of 20 loci, with a total of 30 alleles. Six loci were diagnostic (Aat-2, Gcdh-1, Gpi-A, Idh-1, Ldh-A and Mdh-A), indicating the presence of interjacent reproductive isolation. The occurrence of few polymorphic loci acknowledge two morphotypes, with heterozygosity values He = 0.0291 for H. nigromaculatus and He = 0.0346 for H. cf. nigromaculatus. F IS statistics demonstrated fixation of the alleles in the two morphotypes. Genetic identity (I)...

Comparative genetic structure in pines: evolutionary and conservation consequences RChHN
DELGADO,PATRICIA; CUENCA,ARGELIA; ESCALANTE,ANA E.; MOLINA-FREANER,FRANCISCO; PIÑERO,DANIEL.
Pines have been the focus of several studies that estimate population genetic parameters using both allozymes and chloroplast single sequence repeats (SSRs). Also, the genus has also been recently studied using molecular systematics so that we now have a more clear understanding of their evolutionary history. With this background we studied comparatively the genetic structure in pines. Expected heterozygosity is particularly constant with a 99 % confidence interval between 0.19 and 0.23 in species that have been studied until now using allozymes. There is a significant proportion of species (9/41) that show high population differentiation estimates (Fst = or larger than 0.15) and five of these have large and wingless seeds probably associated with low...

Estimation du polymorphisme enzymatique d'une population de Penaeus jap nicus maintenue en élevage depuis quatre générations ArchiMer
Laubier, A; Pasteur, N; Moriyasu, M.
The polymorphism of 37 enzyme-encoding genes was investigated in a Penaeus japonicus population born the same night from a stock maintained artificially four generations. Five loci were found to be polymorphie (Lap-4, Es-3, Es-6, Es-8 and Mpi-2), and genotype frequencies at four of these loci indicate: a) that the shrimps studied come from the same two parents and b) that Mpi-2 and Es-3 genes are autosomal. The rate of polymorphism observed in this Penaeus japonicus population is similar to that described in natural populations of other Peneidae species, despite the probable occurrence of inbreeding.

Genetic and ecological differentiation between the butterfly sisterspecies Colias alfacariensis and Colias hyale Naturalis
Cleary, Daniel F.R.; Descimon, Henri; Menken, Steph B.J..
Clear habitat separation between the sister species Colias alfacariensis and C. hyale is shown when occurring sympatrically. Colias hyale is found more often in moist cultivated pastures while Colias alfacariensis is more abundant in dry uncultivated habitat. Out of a total of 16 loci, no diagnostic loci were found between C. alfacariensis and C. hyale, and both species shared most major polymorphisms. Exceptions were the marked differences in allele frequencies at the HK locus and only C, hyale, but not C. alfacariensis was further invariable at the GOT2 locus, which is usually highly polymorphic in the Pieridae. Colias hyale has a significantly lower level of heterozygosity than its sister species C. alfacariensis. In Colias alfacariensis heterozygosity...

Genetic and morphometric differences between yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus, Lutjanidae) populations of the tropical West Atlantic Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vasconcellos,Anderson V.; Vianna,Paulo; Paiva,Paulo C.; Schama,Renata; Solé-Cava,Antonio.
Populations of Ocyurus chrysurus were compared genetically and morphometrically along the West Atlantic coast to test the null hypothesis of population homogeneity in the area. Brazilian populations were found to be differentiated in shape (canonical variates analysis; F[48,515] = 10.84, p < 0.0001). Analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequences (663 bp of the control region) did not show any differences between Brazilian populations but could detect differences between Brazilian and Caribbean (Belize) populations. The samples from Pernambuco differed significantly from the other Brazilian populations in allozyme frequencies (11 loci; F ST = 0.167; p < 0.05), but this may have resulted from the small number of samples analysed for that population. Sequence...

Genetic differentiation of the neotropical tree species Protium spruceanum (Benth.) Engler (Burseraceae) between fragments and vegetation corridors in Brazilian Atlantic forest Acta Botanica
Vieira,Fábio de Almeida; Carvalho,Dulcinéia de.
We studied patterns of genetic differentiation in a connected landscape with an interesting history of human habitat conversion that began two centuries ago, during the Brazilian colonization period. In the fragments of Brazilian Atlantic seasonal forest and corridors of secondary forest, Protium spruceanum is an abundant native, mass-flowering/insect-pollinated and bird-dispersed tree. Genetic diversity was analyzed from 230 individuals in five fragments (1 to 11.8 ha) and four corridors (460 to 1000 m length) using allozyme loci. We did not find evidence of inbreeding within fragments or corridors, but the proportion of heterozygotes (<IMG SRC="/img/revistas/abb/v23n4/a28simb1.gif" WIDTH=287 HEIGHT=96>) were significantly higher in fragments than...

Genetic diversity and environmental stress in Italian populations of the cyprinodont fish Aphanius fasciatus ArchiMer
Cimmaruta, R; Scialanca, F; Luccioli, F; Nascetti, G.
Allozyme electrophoresis has been used to analyse the genetic structure of ten populations of the killifish, Aphanius fasciatus, sampled from Italian coastal brackish lagoons or salterns. The goal of the study was to compare the genetic structure of samples obtained from habitats characterised by environmental stress of different kinds, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the relationships between the genetic variation of natural populations and environmental disturbance, either natural or man-made. Therefore, the sampling scheme has been planned to provide samples from both brackish habitats, characterised by natural stress with seasonal marked fluctuations of chemical and physical parameters, and from coastal lagoons suffering from a high...

Genetic structure of bisexual and parthenogenetic populations of Artemia from Italian brackish-hypersaline waters ArchiMer
Nascetti, G; Bondanelli, P; Aldinucci, A; Cimmaruta, R.
Eight populations of Artemia displaying different reproduction modalities (amphigonic vs. parthenogenetic) and ploidies (diploid vs. polyploid) have been collected from Italian salt-works or brackish coastal lagoons, and their genetic structure has been investigated using allozyme electrophoresis. The results obtained on genetic differentiation showed that the Tyrrhenian bisexual samples (A. salina) are genetically homogeneous even between populations located in relatively faraway sites (Sardinia-Latium), having a moderate gene flow assisted by migratory waterfowl. The parthenogenetic samples (A. parthenogenetica) are genetically well differentiated both from the bisexual ones and among them, even when characterised by the same ploidy. Each sample presents...

Genetic structure of honeybee populations from southern Brazil and Uruguay Genet. Mol. Biol.
Diniz,Nilza Maria; Soares,Ademilson Espencer Egea; Sheppard,Walter Steve; Del Lama,Marco Antonio.
Apis mellifera scutellata was introduced to Brazil in 1956 and Africanized honeybee populations have now spread from Argentina to the southwestern United States. Temperate climatic restrictions seem to be a natural limit to Africanized honeybee expansion around parallels 35° to 40° SL. We used allozyme loci (Mdh-1 and Hk-1) and mtDNA haplotypes to characterize honeybee populations in southern Brazil and Uruguay and define a possible transition area between Africanized and European bees. Samples of 194 bee colonies were collected from ten localities between 30°-35° SL and 52°-59° WL. The mtDNA restriction patterns of these colonies were obtained through digestion of the mitochondrial genome by Eco RI, or by digestion by Bgl II and Xba I of the cytochrome B...

Genetic structure of natural populations of Cryptocarya moschata Nees (Lauraceae) from southeastern Brazilian Atlantic rain forest Biota Neotropica
Moraes,Pedro Luís Rodrigues de; Derbyshire,Maria Teresa Vitral de Carvalho.
This study was accomplished on a more comprehensive basis to evaluate previous questions that were raised from a preliminary article about the genetic structure of Cryptocarya moschata populations. Thus, through the analysis of 40 polymorphic allozyme loci, allele frequencies were estimated from 335 individuals of 11 natural populations of C. moschata from six hydrographic basins of São Paulo state and Serra da Estrela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Estimates of Wright's F statistics were done through the analysis of variance, presenting average values of <img border=0 width=32 height=32 id="_x0000_i1026" src="../../../../../../img/revistas/bn/v4n1/img/a04car(f).jpg" align=absmiddle > or = 0.352, <img border=0 width=32 height=32 id="_x0000_i1027"...

Genetic variability and evidence of founder effect in Hemiodus orthonops (Characiformes: Hemiodontidae) from the upper Paraná River basin, Brazil Biological Sciences
Marques, Liégie Alher; Renesto, Erasmo.
Hemiodus orthonops is a small fish of the Hemiodontidae family, order Characiformes, with a maximum of 25 cm standard length. Until recently, H. orthonops was an endemic species from the Paraná-Paraguay basin and it was absent from the upper Paraná River basin. Since 2008, it has started to be collected in the upper Paraná River, representing up to 10% of catches. Two population samples of H. orthonops from two localities of the upper Parana River basin (Porto Camargo and Porto Figueira) were analyzed using the allozymes electrophoresis technique. Twenty-one enzymatic loci were detected. The population sample from Porto Camargo displayed a genetic variability (He = 0.1061) higher than that from Porto Figueira (He = 0.0580) and homozygote excess in both of...

Genetic variability in four samples of Neoplecostomus yapo (Teleostei: Loricariidae) from the rio Paranapanema basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Philippsen,Juliana S.; Renesto,Erasmo; Gealh,Ana Maria; Artoni,Roberto F.; Shibatta,Oscar A.; Zawadzki,Claudio H..
Four samples of Neoplecostomus yapo were analyzed through the allozyme electrophoresis technique in corn starch gel. The allozyme pattern was similar to those found in N. paranensis with 24 loci scored. Two samples (ribeirão Atlântico and ribeirão Uraí) showed monomorphic bands for all 24 loci, whereas the other two (rio Verde and rio Fortaleza) showed 8.3% of polymorphic loci. The He genetic variability estimates for the rios Verde and Fortaleza populations were 0.0195 and 0.0179, respectively, too much inferior to the mean heterozygosity summed to species from the whole world (0.051). The Wright statistical values F IS = 0.5181, F IT = 0.5681 and F ST = 0.1039 and the genetic distance of Nei values showed that the four samples are genetically very...

Genetic variability of Hypostomus (Teleostei, Loricariidae) from the Ribeirão Maringá, a stream of the upper Rio Paraná basin, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Paiva,Suzana de; Renesto,Erasmo; Zawadzki,Cláudio Henrique.
Hypostomus strigaticeps and two morphotypes of Hypostomus were collected from Ribeirão Maringá, a small tributary of the Rio Pirapó, an effluent of the upper Rio Paraná. The three populations were analyzed by allozyme electrophoresis that allowed the scoring of 25 loci from 14 enzyme systems. Heterozygosity values (He) were 0.028 in H. strigaticeps, 0.027 in Hypostomus sp. 1 and zero in Hypostomus sp. 2. Several diagnostic loci and fixed differences were observed for each population at loci Acp-A, Gcdh-A and Mdhp-A. Thus, all populations were genetically distinct, although there were many common alleles. The unbiased genetic identities of Nei (I) were estimated as 0.780 for Hypostomus sp. 1 and H. strigaticeps, 0.357 for H. strigaticeps and Hypostomus sp....

Habitat selection and phenotypic diversity in the anchovy of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Grellier, Patrick; Leseur, Floriane; Lenfant, Philippe.
Diversity among individuals in a population is an important feature linking vital rates with behaviour and spatial occupation. We measured the growth increments in the otolith of individual fishes collected on the annual fisheries survey PELGAS from 2001 to 2015. Individuals who grew larger at juvenile stage occupied later in life more off-shore habitats. Further, we analysed the allozymes of 13 different loci from 2001 to 2006. Alleles of the enzyme IDH showed different frequencies in inshore and offshore habitats. The population spatially segregates along a coast to off-shore gradient with individuals showing different early growth and allele frequencies. Results show how individuals in a population segregate spatially in different habitats in relation...
