Biodegradation of naphthalene and anthracene by chemo-tactically active rhizobacteria of populus deltoides BJM

Several naphthalene and anthracene degrading bacteria were isolated from rhizosphere of Populus deltoides, which were growing in non-contaminated soil. Among these, four isolates, i.e. Kurthia sp., Micrococcus varians, Deinococcus radiodurans and Bacillus circulans utilized chrysene, benzene, toluene and xylene, in addition to anthracene and naphthalene. Kurthia sp and B. circulans showed positive chemotactic response for naphthalene and anthracene. The mean growth rate constant (K) of isolates were found to increase with successive increase in substrate concentration (0.5 to 1.0 mg/50ml). Biorremediación de zonas contaminadas por hidrocarburos empleando hongos comestibles : efecto del antraceno sobre el crecimiento in vitro de Pleurotus ostreatus. Colegio de Postgraduados

En la producción de hongos comestibles se utilizan diversos residuos agroindustriales como la paja de cebada, trigo y avena. Como resultado del cultivo, se producen grandes cantidades de sustrato residual, el cual puede potencialmente ser usado para procesos de biorremediación in situ. En el presente estudio, se cultivó el hongo comestible Pleurotus ostreatus (CP-50) en presencia del hidrocarburo aromático policíclico, antraceno. La cepa se cultivó en tres condiciones: 1) Agar con Extracto de Malta (EMA), CP-50 y antraceno (tratamiento); 2) EMA y CP-50 (testigo) y 3) EMA y antraceno (blanco). Biotransformation of anthracene and fluoranthene by Absidia fusca Linnemann Electron. J. Biotechnol.

A strain of Absidia fusca was isolated from a pesticide-contaminated soil (Annaba, Algeria). The biotransformation capability of this strain towards two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): anthracene and fluoranthene was compared to that exhibited by another strain of A. fusca isolated from a non-contaminated milieu and considered as a control. The results obtained were statistically analyzed and showed that the strain isolated from the contaminated soil was more efficient than the control to remove anthracene from the medium, during all the kinetics (90% removed versus 45% after 24 hrs). Properties of catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the cell free extract and immobilized extract of Mycobacterium fortuitum BJM

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are carcinogenic compounds which contaminate water and soil, and the enzymes can be used for bioremediation of these environments. This study aimed to evaluate some environmental conditions that affect the production and activity of the catechol 1,2-dioxygenase (C12O) by Mycobacterium fortuitum in the cell free and immobilized extract in sodium alginate. The bacterium was grown in mineral medium and LB broth containing 250 mg L-1 of anthracene (PAH). Selección de cepas de hongos comestibles productoras de lacasas y su potencial de aplicación a procesos de biorremediación en zonas contaminadas con hidrocarburos en México. Colegio de Postgraduados

Quince cepas de hongos comestibles pertenecientes a los géneros Pleurotus, Ganoderma, Lentinula y Coprinopsis, fueron evaluadas en cuanto a su actividad enzimática utilizando el medio de cultivo agar con extracto de malta (EMA), adicionado con ácido 2,2'–azino–bis–(3–etillbenzotiazolin–6–sulfónico) (ABTS), 2,6-dimetoxyphenol (DMP) y guayacol. Se seleccionaron nueve cepas para determinar cuantitativamente la actividad de lacasas. Esta evaluación se realizó con el medio de cultivo de extracto de malta líquido (EMB) suplementado con 0.1 mM de sulfato de cobre. Se demostró que las cepas CP-50 de Pleurotus ostreatus y CP-267 de P. pulmonarius son altamente productoras de actividad de lacasas, obteniéndose 4,000 U/ml y 2,500 U/ml, respectivamente. Tolerance of Magellan fungi in peat to anthracene and n-dodecane for potential use in bioremediation. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(1):85-93. The tolerances of filamentous Magellan fungi in peat were analyzed in the presence of structurally different petroleum hydrocarbons to assess their abilities for bioremediation in contaminated soils. Fungi on PDA (potato dextrose agar) and fresh peat plates were cultured and purified. The morphologically identified species were grown in a hydrocarbon adapted-fungi (HAF) medium. Increasing concentrations of anthracene, n-dodecane and furfural were applied to observe tolerances based on the radial growth kinetics of hyphae.
