Abundance and prevalence of Aphidius avenae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Peñalver-Cruz,Ainara; Ortiz-Martínez,Sebastián; Villegas,Cinthya; Tomanovic,Zeljko; Zepeda-Paulo,Francisca; Zikic,Vladimir; Lavandero,Blas.
Abstract During the samplings described here, Aphidius avenae (=picipes) (Haliday, 1834) was collected. This species has been reported in Chile but has never been studied in terms of its relative abundance and prevalence in central and southern Chile by using classical or molecular methods. The composition of the parasitoid assemblages on several cereal aphid hosts was examined for three seasons in agricultural landscapes. In this note, we describe the prevalence of this parasitoid species in cereal aphids and other aphid hosts and discuss the abundance of this parasitoid compared to other aphid parasitoids and the probable origins of this important aphid parasitoid species in Chile. The results indicate that A. avenae has a low prevalence compared to...

Aphididae (Hemiptera) on ornamental plants in Córdoba (Argentina) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Szpeiner,Alfonsina.
In 30 surveys across Cordoba city and surroundings (Argentina) I recorded, from November 2001 to May 2002, a total of 109 ornamental plants infested with aphid colonies. Surveys were conducted in the local botanical garden as well as homestead gardens and nurseries. Seventeen species of aphids were identified, 4 of which are new species in the area, from 47 ornamental plants. In a total of 59 plant/aphid associations, 38 new associations were found. I present the first record of aphids colonizing Cactaceae in Argentina. Most aphid colonies were medium and a high proportion (more than 40%) showed alate individuals. The most frequent aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch were especially associated with the most frequent damages:...

Biological aspects and life table of Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas, 1878) as a function of temperature Scientia Agricola
Auad,Alexander Machado; Moraes,Jair Campos de.
The aphid Uroleucon ambrosiae (Thomas) is considered a pest of hidroponically-grown lettuce, but basic and applied information on its control are scarce in Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different temperatures on biological aspects and life history of U. ambrosiae (Thomas) developing on hydroponic lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) crop. Newly emerged nymphs were placed on 4-cm discs of hydroponic lettuce, var. Verônica, which were maintained on 5-cm Petri dishes, at temperatures of 15, 20 and 25ºC and 14 h photophase, and inside a greenhouse, within micro-cages at room temperature. The duration of development in all nymphal stages varied inversely to temperature. Nymphs maintained at 20ºC and 25ºC, had similar development period....

Detection of Citrus sudden death-associated virus and Haplotypes of Citrus tristeza virus in Toxoptera citricida and Aphis spiraecola and implication on citrus sudden death in Brazil Agrociencia
Loeza-Kuk,Emiliano; Ochoa-Martínez,Daniel L.; Mora-Aguilera,Gustavo; Rivas-Valencia,Patricia; Gutiérrez-Espinosa,M. Alejandra; Cintra de Jesús Junior,Waldir; Villegas-Monter,Ángel; Arno-Wulff,Nelson; Perez-Molphe-Balch,Eugenio.
Individuals of Toxoptera citricida (Kirkaldy) and Aphis spiraecola (Patch) collected in 16 commercial citrus orchards of the São Paulo and Minas Gerais States of Brazil were analyzed for virus presence. Orchards of Minas Gerais were selected because citrus trees exhibit symptoms of citrus sudden death (CSD) and in São Paulo due the presence of severe strains of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), in order to detect genomic sequences of any of these strains that could be associated to CSD. Samples made up of 20 aphids from the localities of Comendador Gomes, Frutal, Prata and Uberlândia, in the State of Minas Gerais, a CSD associated virus (CSDaV) was often found through nested RT-PCR; in samples from São Paulo, none showed positive for the same primers. With the...

ABSTRACT The biology, reproductive variables and population growth indicators of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fed on three diets, namely Cinara atlantica (Wilson, 1919) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Brevicoryne brassicae (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and frozen eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller, 1879) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), were evaluated. With all three diets, birth rate was higher than mortality, resulting in positive rm values and thus indicating population growth. Under the conditions used in the experiments, H. axyridis was able to survive, develop and reproduce normally. This demonstrates that are different kind of food that can be essential for supporting the reproduction of some species of Coccinellidae,...

Fat body morphology of Eriopis connexa (coleoptera, coccinelidae) in function of two alimentary sources BABT
Sarmento,Renato de Almeida; Oliveira,Hamilton Gomes de; Holtz,Anderson Mathias; Silva,Solange Marques da; Serrão,José Eduardo; Pallini,Ângelo.
This work investigated the influence of two alimentary sources: aphids and mites, in the morphology of the fat body of E. connexa. Results showed that fat body cells of individuals fed with aphids presented areas more than three folds higher (511 ± 98,7µm²) than those of beetles fed with mites (162 ± 34,9µm²). Histochemical tests showed that nutrient amount stored in fat body was higher in lady-beetles fed on aphids.

Functional response of the predator Eriopis connexa (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) to different prey types BABT
Sarmento,Renato Almeida; Pallini,Angelo; Venzon,Madelaine; Souza,Og Francisco Fonseca de; Molina-Rugama,Adrián José; Oliveira,Claudinei Lima de.
This work evaluated the functional response of adult females of Eriopis connexa to different densities of Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Tetranychus evansi. When preying upon aphids, E. connexa presented a sigmoidal functional response (Type III). This behavior, however, changed drastically to an exponential (Type II) functional response, when mites (T. evansi), rather than aphids, were offered to E. connexa. Such different patterns showed that this coccinellid needed to adopt distinct strategies according to the kind of prey available. Since predators were believed to be able to regulate prey populations only when adopting Type III functional response. E. connexa would be a good candidate for a biological control agent of M. euphorbiae, but would not suppress...

Grazing Scar Characteristics Impact Degree of Fungal Facilitation in Spartina alterniflora Leaves in a South American Salt Marsh BABT
Freitas,Ricardo Franco; Schrack,Elizabeth Carol; Sieg,Robert Drew; Silliman,Brian Reed; Costa,César Serra Bonifácio.
Grazing scars of burrowing crabs and Hemiptera insects were simulated on leaves of the salt marsh grass Spartina alterniflora. Simulations of crab feeding generated two-fold higher fungal (ergosterol) content in leaves in comparison to that generated by insect scar simulations (1.26 ±0.55 and 0.57 ±0.25 µg per cm², respectively). This study provided evidence that herbivory could facilitate microbial infection by fungi in dominant South American salt marsh plants and indicated that specific feeding mechanisms used by different herbivores might differentially impact the strength of this interaction.

Insecticidal activity of essential oil from Eucalyptus globulus against Aphis nerii (Boyer) and Gynaikothrips ficorum (Marchal) Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Russo,S; Yaber Grass,M. A; Fontana,H. C; Leonelli,E.
Aphids and thrips are very important pest species of many greenhouse and field plants in the world. In recent years, there have been attempts to identify plants for their insecticidal property with a view to find out suitable alternatives to the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides, which are a risk for human health and the environment. The aim of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal effect of Eucalyptus globulus Labill essential oil (EO) against Aphis nerll Boyer de Fonscolombe (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Gynaikothrips ficorum Marchal (Thysanoptera: Ploeothridae). The EO was extracted by hydrodistillation and the bioassay was evaluated by toxicity contact method, using solutions at different concentrations and for different time intervals. The...

The relationship between pests and natural enemies using multivariate analysis on cotton in different spacing has not been documented yet. Using multivariate approaches is possible to optimize strategies to control Aphis gossypii at different crop spacings because the possibility of a better use of the aphid sampling strategies as well as the conservation and release of its natural enemies. The aims of the study were (i) to characterize the temporal abundance data of aphids and its natural enemies using principal components, (ii) to analyze the degree of correlation between the insects and between groups of variables (pests and natural enemies), (iii) to identify the main natural enemies responsible for regulating A. gossypii populations, and (iv) to...
