A combined microsatellite multiplexing and boiling DNA extraction method for high-throughput parentage analyses in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer

The analysis of parentage using microsatellite markers is of increasing importance, notably in aquaculture genetic research where communal rearing of mixed families can be used to reduce unwanted environmental variance. We present here an optimization of parental genotype assessment for larvae or adults of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, using a multiplex system of three microsatellite loci. In conjunction with a simple DNA extraction protocol, this method enables high throughput analyses of parentage in C. gigas. Using this method, we successfully determined the parentage of 93% (1224 out of 1318) of the progeny in a factorial cross between 3 females and 10 males. Ecological modeling of dynamic systems such as marine environments may require detailed spatial resolution when the modeled area is greatly influenced by complex physical circulation. Therefore, the simulation of a marine ecosystem must be underlain by a physical model. However, coupling hydrodynamic and biogeochemical models is not straightforward. This paper presents a modeling technique that can be used to build generic and flexible fully-spatial physical-biogeochemical models to study coastal marine ecosystems using a visual modeling environment (VME). Developed for carrying out risk assessments under the European Commission (EC) Council Regulation No 708/2007 concerning the use of alien and locally absent species in aquaculture (ASR), the European Non-native Species in Aquaculture Risk Assessment Scheme (ENSARS) is briefly summarised, and the ‘Organism’ module is applied to the 24 species listed in ASR's Annex IV. A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval <i>Lates calcarifer</i> and <i>Siganus guttatus</i>. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer

In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

Marker-based parentage assignment provides the opportunity to investigate factors of efficiency for mixed-family designs and factorial mating. In such designs, family size is both uncontrolled and small, which may be thought to limit the accuracy of estimated breeding values (EBVs). The objective of this work was to estimate the accuracy of EBVs of growth and quality traits in a large factorial mating design and in commercial breeding conditions. The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Dans les systèmes d'élevage intensif de crevettes Pénéides, la teneur en oxygène dissous du milieu d'élevage est un des éléments prioritaires à prendre en compte dans la gestion des bassins. Une aération d'appoint est nécessaire pour maintenir cette teneur en oxygène dissous dans une gamme de valeurs acceptables. Ce paramètre a été suivi sur deux fermes d'élevage intensif à Tahiti, dans différentes conditions de charge des bassins et dans différents schémas d'utilisation des aérateurs.

African Aquaculture: A Regional Summary with Emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa OceanDocs

The African Region consists of 48 countries and five island nations, most of which are practising some form of aquaculture, often at a very low level. Over half the countries report producing less than 100 mt annually. The largest producer is Nigeria (17 700 mt) followed by Madagascar (5 100 mt) and Zambia (4 700 mt). The 1997 combined aquaculture production of the region was 40 300 mt. Aquaculture is estimated to be 95 percent small scale, with fish ponds integrated into the mosaic of agricultural activities. Mean yield is approximated as 500 kg/ha/yr, although the range is wide, from less than a hundred to more than 10 000 kg/ha/yr. Aquaculture is becoming more important for human consumption. Sustainable aquaculture procedures came up as an alternative, due to the negative environmental impacts of conventional aquaculture procedures. Nonetheless, little is known about consumer segments for sustainable aquaculture and their preferences. Overall, participants paid a lot of attention on the declaration of origin; specifically fish products from Germany or Denmark were preferred along with local products. Consumers are generally supporting a sustainable production. However, communication claims and labelling schemes should be improved to reach consumer acceptance.

Calcium carbonate (limestone) is a safe but slow-acting product for aquaculture liming. Calcium oxide (lime) is a fast-acting but dangerous product. It would be interesting to have simultaneously a safe and fast-acting liming product. The present work aimed to evaluate two alternative liming blends for tilapia culture. The culture water was initially acidified with HCl. Next, the same quantity of CaCO3 (control), Na2CO3+CaSO4 or Na2CO3+CaCl2 was applied to the culture water. There were also non-limed tanks. In order to test the fertilization effect on Artemia production, six treatments of a mineral fertilization with di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and urea (0.25*F; 0.5*F; 0.75*F; 1*F; 1.5*F; 2*F with F = 15 mg/L of DAP and 15 mg/L of urea) were compared to a control unfertilized. After the initial fertilization (day 0), a half a dose was brought once a week. At day 8, Artemia nauplii were inoculated in all tanks at the rate of 50 nauplii per liter. Physico-chemical and biological parameters of the culture were analysed each week, during the 48 days of experiment. The aim of this study was to estimate the costs caused by economic losses of finfish due to mortality by diseases in Brazil. A model for estimating the costs related to parasitic and bacterial diseases in farmed fish and an estimative of these economic impacts are presented.
