A new angiosperm leaf morphotype from the Early Cretaceous (Late Aptian) of San Luis Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana
Puebla,Gabriela G.
A new fossil angiosperm leaf morphotype, "LC-Microphyll trifoliate", from the Late Aptian La Cantera Formation, central western Argentina, is described. The leaf remains occurred at the type section of the formation within a low diversity macrofloral association. Fossils are found mainly as isolated small size leaflets (0.3-1.5 cm long). The leaves are pinnately compound (imparipinnate, trifoliate), the leaflets have pinnately lobed margin, first vein category pinnate, secondary veins craspedodromous opposite to subopposite ending at the apex of lobes and an intramarginal vein. "LC-Microphyll trifoliate" is among the earliest record of leaf remains possibly allied to the eudicots and one of the first evidence of angiosperm with compound leaves.

A new araucarian fossil species from the Paleogene of southern Argentina Ameghiniana
Panti,Carolina; Césari,Silvia N.; Marenssi,Sergio A.; Olivero,Eduardo B..
A new Araucariaceaea from the Paleogene of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina is described. Araucaria pararaucana sp. nov. has imbricate, ovate-lanceolate leaves with an acute apex, characterized by the presence of discontinuous and longitudinally oriented stomatal rows separated by epidermal cells, which may be slightly sinuous. Stomatal guard cell surface is granular. These fossil leaves are compared with the extant sections Bunya, Intermedia and Araucaria. Their anatomical characters along with the external morphology suggest a close affinity with the extant southern Patagonian species A. araucana (Molina) K. Koch. The record of this new late Eocene species provides more evidence for a probable unique representation of Section Araucaria in the area...

A new palm trunk from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina Ameghiniana
Ottone,Eduardo G..
A new morphospecies of palm trunk, Palmoxylon pichaihuensis sp. nov., is proposed on the basis of several specimens recovered from a succession of tuffs and breccias at Pichaihue, Neuquén Province, Argentina. The specimens comprise atactosteles that display densely crowded fibrovascular bundles in the peripheral zone, and less congested fibrovascular bundles, randomly scattered or arranged in irregular circles in the central zone; sclerenchyma reniform; xylem with 1-4 large metaxylem vessels and 6-12 smaller protoxylem elements in the central zone, and an f/v ratio of 1.3-2:1. The Pichaihue fossil assemblage is similar to, and probably coeval with the flora of Bajo de Santa Rosa, Río Negro Province, reflecting a warm and relatively humid climate, at ca....

A new species of Uncinia (Cyperaceae) from the New World and the first report of U. Chilensis from Argentina Darwiniana
Wheeler,Gerald A..
A new species of Uncinia (Cyperaceae), U. austroamericana, is described and illustrated from austral South America and from the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the south-Atlantic Ocean. This species grows in persistently wet, base-poor sites, particularly in Sphagnum bogs, and is known from southern Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and from the largest island of the Tristan da Cunha group. It differs both morphologically and ecologically from the similar-appearing U. macrolepis, a minerotrophic species best known from moist depressions in grasslands. The new species differs morphologically from U. macrolepis by possessing achenes that, when mature, are pale-colored and conspicuously-thickened at the apex and, also, by having more or less loosely-flowered...

A preliminary revision of knowledge status of felids in Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Lucherini,Mauro; Soler,Lucía; Luengos Vidal,Estela.
Argentina is the host of 10 wild felids (28% of the world total). Although the Cat Specialist Group Action Plan has classified the conservation status of Argentine cats as relatively good, the ranking was based on a largely incomplete database for at least 80% of the species. Here we review the current status of knowledge and research effort of Argentine cats, compare it with their distribution, habitat association and conservation status and provide guidelines for their future research. Between 1990 and 2000, cat research has received increasing attention in Argentina. Twenty-four projects have been carried out, but only 13 studies are still in progress. A rank of research priority has been calculated for each felid and ecoregion. Our analysis showed that...

A synopsis of the South American Hydrovatus (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae), with notes on habitat and distribution, and a key to species Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Trémouilles,Edgardo R.; Michat,Mariano C.; Torres,Patricia L. M..
We revised the South American members of the genus Hydrovatus Motschulsky. Each of the three recognized species is diagnosed, with emphasis on diagnostic characters. A key summarizing the main differences is provided. To identify South American specimens of H. caraibus Sharp, they were compared with Central American specimens, including type material. Based on the material examined, H. caraibus is a species broadly distributed in Central and South America, with representatives of different areas separated by minor differences. The geographical distributions of the three species are considerably enlarged: H. crassulus Sharp and H. turbinatus Zimmermann are recorded for the first time from Paraguay, and H. caraibus is recorded for the first time from...

Abundance and distribution of Lithophaga (Mytilidae) in extant and fossil oysters: taphonomic and paleobiological implications Ameghiniana
Mauna,Cecilia; Casadío,Silvio; Parras,Ana; Pascual,Marcela.
In this study we analyze the abundance and distribution patterns of Lithophaga patagonica in valves of Ostrea puelchana and compare them to those of Lithophaga sp. observed on the fossil species " Ostrea " patagonica and " Ostrea " alvarezii from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation. No specimen of the fossil oysters showed borings of Lithophaga sp. on the interior surface of the valves. This suggests that they were produced while the oysters were still living and, at the same time, that the oyster beds were buried rapidly after death. In Ostrea puelchana the boring abundance was significantly higher for the left valve and, within it, the areas more heavily bored were the umbones and the platform. The same results were obtained for valves of " Ostrea "...

Abundancia relativa del Loro Barranquero (Cyanoliseus patagonus) en la Provincia de Buenos Aires y zonas limítrofes de La Pampa y Río Negro, Argentina Hornero
Grilli,Pablo G; Soave,Guillermo E; Arellano,María L; Masello,Juan F.

Gatto,Alejandro; Quintana,Flavio; Yorio,Pablo; Lisnizer,Nora.

Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov., a new mimosoid polyad species from the Neogene of Colorado Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana
Caccavari,Marta A.; Guler,M. Verónica.
Fossil mimosoid polyads have been recently recovered from Neogene deposits in the Colorado Basin, Argentina, and the new species Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov. is described, which is closely similar to polyads of species included in Acacia Miller subgenus Acacia Vassal. It is characterized by colporate apertures on the distal face of the pollen grains, a typical polyad of the subgenus Acacia. The new polyad species is very similar to those of the extant Acacia curvifructa Burkart. Comparing the habitat of subgenus Acacia extant species, the Acaciapollenites acaciae occurrence suggests drier and warmer paleoclimatic conditions than today for the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene in the Colorado Basin. Paleogeographic data of Acacia pollen diversity are...
