Available algal biomass in tropical brackish water artificial habitats IRD

Experiments were conducted in february 1990 at the Layo aquaculture station located in Ebrié Lagoon, Ivory Coast, to find a reliable technique for the estimation of algal biomass and to understand the process that leads to a high tertiary productivity. Periphyton, growing on bamboo, was sampled at different settlement levels in an "acadja-enclos" at 200 m off the lagoon bank. "Acadja-enclos" is an extensive aquaculture system where #Sarotherodon melanotheron$ (#Cichlidae$), a herbivorous fish, occurs mostly. Ecosystem manipulation for increasing biological N2 fixation by blue-green algae (CYANOBACTERIA) in lowland rice fields IRD

An introduction to the soil/floodwater ecosystem of lowland rice fields is given. Two primary consumers are particularly important in limiting the growth and N2-fixing activities of blue-green algae in irrigated rice ; the OSTRACODA (Class CRUSTACEA) and the PULMONATA (MULUSCA). Control of grazing by neem seeds AZADIRACHTA INDICA A. Juss and cultural practices enhanced BGA biomass and increased N2-fixation ten fold. Significant increases in rice grain protein occur if heterocystous algae bloom early in the rice cultivation cycle and grazing control is maintained over 40 days. Une importante biomasse algale s'échoue, chaque année, de novembre à juin, en certains endroits de la côte du Sénégal. Cette biomasse, qui n'est pas utilisée, contribue à la pollution des plages. C'est pour cela que les auteurs ont tenté, en utilisant des procédés de biotechnologie de valoriser cette biomasse par la filière biogaz-compost , la transformant en deux sous-produits : un biogaz (combustible) et un compost à usage agronomique. Le point de départ de cette recherche a consisté à trouver l'inoculum bactérien adapté à ce substrat et à la fermentation en eau de mer. Cet inoculum a été extrait de boues de mangroves.
