Biological responses of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) when fed three species of forage grasses. Repositório Alice
PARCHEN, H. A.; AUAD, A. M..
In Brazil, the forage species Brachiaria spp., Pennisetum purpureum (Schumacher), and Cynodon dactylon (L.) (Poaceae) are important components in the feed that is used to rear animals for meat and milk production. Aphids are among the insects that feed on these forage species and, at high population levels, greatly reduce the amount and quality of forage. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the nutritional suitability of the forage species Brachiaria decumbens Stapf, C. dactylon, and P. purpureum for the aphids Sipha flava (Forbes), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas), and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Nymphs, which were up to 24 h old, of the 4 aphid species were observed for a biological cycle (1 full...

Economic Potential of Substituting Legumes for Synthetic Nitrogen in Warm Season Perennial Grasses used for Stocker Cattle Grazing AgEcon
Kering, Maru K.; Biermacher, Jon T.; Reuter, Ryan; Butler, Twain; Springer, Job D.; Rogers, James K.; Blanton, John, Jr.; Bouton, Joe H.; Guretzky, John A..
Stocker cattle grazing warm season perennial grasses is an important economic activity in the southern Great Plains. Substantial increases in the price of nitrogen fertilizer is negatively affecting forage producers’ profitability. Two alternative nitrogen management systems that use annual and perennial legumes have been developed for bermudagrass pastures. The goal of the study is to determine if the legumes systems are more profitable than the conventional practice of applying synthetic sources of nitrogen. Results of the two-year grazing study show that the legume systems could not compete economically with the common practice.

Soil and weed occurrence mapping and estimates of sugarcane production cost. Repositório Alice
VERRUMA, A. A.; MARTINELLI, P. R. P.; RABELLO, L. M.; INAMASU, R. Y.; SANTOS, K. E. L.; BETTIOL, G. M.; BERNARDI, A. C. de C..
The use of Precision Agriculture (PA) tools for variable rate herbicide application may contribute to the use of herbicides only in the areas with most weed occurrence, reducing environmental impacts and production costs. The aim of this research was to evaluate the soil apparent electrical conductivity and vegetation indexes, as well as to estimate the economic return of variable rate herbicide application for weed control in the sugarcane culture. The study was conducted in a field of 11 ha planted with sugarcane variety RB855453, which had a large infestation of bermudagrass. Measurements of soil electrical conductivity and NDVI were performed. Based on the maps generated, the area for application of pre- and postplanting herbicides was estimated. The...

Treated sewage effluent: Agronomical and economical aspects on bermudagrass production. Repositório Alice
NOGUEIRA, S. F.; PEREIRA, B. F. F.; GOMES, T. M.; DE PAULA, A. M.; SANTOS, J. A. DOS; MONTES, C. R..
This study investigated the effects of irrigation using treated sewage effluent (TSE) combined with nitrogen (N) fertilization on the productivity and quality of bermudagrass, and on its economic feasibility under tropical conditions. The treatments employed were SI ? no irrigation and no fertilization; A100 (control) ? irrigation with potable water plus 520 kg N ha−1 year−1 provided as NH4NO3; E0, E33, E66, and E100: irrigation with treated sewage effluent plus 0, 172, 343 and 520 kg N ha−1 year−1 as NH4NO3, respectively. Chemical properties of TSE, shoot dry matter production, N concentration in bermudagrass were determined, and benefit?cost and economic viability analyses were carried out. Tree years of irrigation...
