Anticancer and apoptosis-inducing activities of microbial metabolites Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Phonnok,Sirinet; Uthaisang-Tanechpongtamb,Wanlaya; Wongsatayanon,Benjamas Thanomsub.
The problems of systemic toxicity and drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy urge the continuing discovery of new anticancer agents. We explored the specific anticancer activity from microbial metabolites to find new lead compound. 394 microbial extracts were evaluated on anti-proliferative activity against 4 cancer cell lines using MTT assay. Of these, 20 samples showed varying degree of cytotoxicity but specifically to the cancer cell lines since the growth of normal cells was not significantly inhibited by 1 mg/ml of each cell extracts. The 4 most potent extracts exhibited strongest growth inhibition to each cancer cell type were selected for further studied. Cell morphological changes such as cell shrinkage, lose of surface contact and blebbing were...

Fatty acid profile, quality lipid index and bioactive compounds of flour from grape residues. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 225-234. The present study evaluated the proximate composition, the nutrition indexes of lipids and the presence of biologically active compounds in the flour of bagasse from grapes cultivated by conventional (CC) and organic (OC) methods. CC flour had high percentages of proteins, lipids, calories and saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. On the other hand, OC flour had higher percentages of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, ash and carbohydrates. The results...

Light spectrum on the quality of fruits of physalis species in subtropical area Bragantia
Silva,Daniel Fernandes da; Pio,Rafael; Soares,Joyce Dória Rodrigues; Elias,Heloisa Helena de Siqueira; Villa,Fabiola; Vilas Boas,Eduardo Valério de Barros.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of colored-shade nets on the physicochemical characteristics of physalis in subtropical area. The experimental design was the randomized blocks with a 4 × 5 factorial, being four species of physalis (Physalis peruviana, P. pubescens, P. minima and P. ixocarpa) and four net colors (white, blue, red and black), besides the control under full sun. Titratable acidity (TA), pH, vitamin C, soluble solids (SS), SS/TA relation, total phenolics, anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity were evaluated. It was observed that P. peruviana and P. pubescens have more acid fruits, and P. minima shows vitamin C content higher than the other species. In general, fruits of P. peruviana and P. pubescens have better quality...

The Potential of Microalgae for the Production of Bioactive Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest ArchiMer
Mimouni, Virginie; Ulmann, Lionel; Pasquet, Virginie; Mathieu, Marie; Picot, Laurent; Bougaran, Gael; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Morant-manceau, Annick; Schoefs, Benoit.
Through the photosynthetic activity, microalgae process more than 25% of annual inorganic carbon dissolved in oceans into carbohydrates that ultimately, serve to feed the other levels of the trophic networks. Besides, microalgae synthesize bioactive molecules such as pigments and lipids that exhibit health properties. In addition, abiotic stresses, such as high irradiance, nutrient starvation, UV irradiation, trigger metabolic reorientations ending with the production of other bioactive compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids or carotenoids. Traditionally, these compounds are acquired through the dietary alimentation. The increasing, and often unsatisfied, demand for compounds from natural sources, combined with the decrease of the halieutic resources,...
