Connectivity patterns of coastal fishes following different dispersal scenarios across a transboundary marine protected area (Bonifacio strait, NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer

The Strait of Bonifacio constitutes one of the rare transboundary Marine Protected Areas (MPA) of the Mediterranean Sea (between Sardinia, Italy and Corsica, France). Based on the hypothesis that no-take zones will produce more fish larvae, compared to adjacent fished areas, we modeled the outcome of larvae released by coastal fishes inside the no-take zones of the MPA in order to: (i) characterize the dispersal patterns across the Strait of Bonifacio; (ii) identify the main potential settlement areas; (iii) quantify the connectivity and the larval supply from the MPAs to the surrounding areas. To investigate dispersal and connectivity between spawning and lagoon nursery habitats of the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, in the Gulf of Lions (northwestern Mediterranean Sea), we modeled the potential transport of the species’ larvae between its supposed main spawning site in the region (the Planier Island) and two of its main local nursery areas (the coastal lagoons of Thau and Salses-Leucate). Passive larval drift simulations using a dispersal biophysical model showed a large variability in the possible trajectories from spawning to nursery areas and in the predicted ages for larvae arrival on the two nursery sites. To answer the questions of trophic capacity of the oyster bay of Marennes- Oléron, models were implemented since the 90s. The dynamics of the system is studied here by using a model 2D of hydrodynamism and transport with fine meshes (SiAM2D). The modelling and the analysis of existing data are used to answer the following questions: which factors control the primary production in the bay, in which scales of time act these factors, which link exists between pelagic and microphytobenthic productions , and which is the impact of oysters on the planctonic compartment SiAM2D serves as tool to couple models of pelagic and microphytobenthic primary production, and of filtration by oysters.
