Bioethanol production with different dosages of the commercial Acrylamide polymer compared to a Bioextract in clarifying sugarcane juice Anais da ABC (AABC)
FREITA,CRISTHYANE M.; FREITA,LIDYANE A.; TRALLI,LETICIA F.; SILVA,ALINE F.; MENDES,FRANCIELE Q.; TEIXEIRA,VITOR; MUTTON,MARCIA J.R..
ABSTRACT One of the most important steps is to clarify the juice, which are added synthetic polymer acrylamide base, aiming the fast settling of impurities present in the juice. However, this input is expensive and may have carcinogenic and neurotoxic actions to humans. The search for new natural flocculants that have similarity with the commercial product is of great value. A bioextract that may be promising and has coagulant action is the Moringa oleifera Lam. In this context, the objective of the research was to evaluate the consequences of the use of moringa seed extracts and various concentrations of commercial polymer, such as sedimentation aids in clarifying sugarcane juice in the ethanol production, comparing the efficiency of the bioextract...

Bioplastics production from agricultural crop residues CIGR Journal
Samer, Mohamed.
Bio-based plastics have a huge market and a wide range of applications and then have become increased in economy and research. Due to the environmental hazard on all organisms and the pollution that happens in all natural resources such as air, water, plants and soil pollution and the limitation of quantity of fossil resources on our planet, the future cannot depend on petro-plastics. All fossil products should be replaced by bio-based products. The petro-plastics are one of the fossil products which should be replaced by bio-based plastics. In this study, potato peels were used to produce bioplastics by the extraction of the starch from the peels and adding some ingredients such as water, glycerin, vinegar and industrial colors with different ratios and...

Growth kinetics, effect of carbon substrate in biosynthesis of mcl-PHA by Pseudomonas putida Bet001 BJM
Gumel,A.M.; Annuar,M.S.M.; Heidelberg,T..
Growth associated biosynthesis of medium chain length poly-3-hydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) in Pseudomonas putida Bet001 isolated from palm oil mill effluent was studied. Models with substrate inhibition terms described well the kinetics of its growth. Selected fatty acids (C8:0 to C18:1) and ammonium were used as carbon and nitrogen sources during growth and PHA biosynthesis, resulting in PHA accumulation of about 50 to 69% (w/w) and PHA yields ranging from 10.12 g L-1 to 15.45 g L-1, respectively. The monomer composition of the PHA ranges from C4 to C14, and was strongly influenced by the type of carbon substrate fed. Interestingly, an odd carbon chain length (C7) monomer was also detected when C18:1 was fed. Polymer showed melting temperature (Tm) of 42.0...

Microbial mats in French Polynesia and their biotechnological applications ArchiMer
Guezennec, Jean; Moppert, Xavier; Raguenes, Gerard; Richert, Laurent; Costa, Bernard; Simon-colin, Christelle.
It is well known that microorganisms well-adapted to survival in extreme ecosystems could be considered as new sources of biomolecules that have biotechnological importance. On French Polynesian atolls, microbial mats are developing in water ponds exposed to fluctuations in physical and chemical parameters. In these microbial mats, which are called "kopara" by the inhabitants, bacteria coexist with cyanobacteria, and a synergistic relationship may exist between these two types of living microorganisms. A large number of cyanobacteria and bacteria have been isolated from different mats. Under laboratory conditions, these microorganisms were shown to produce various exopolymers, including exopolysaccharides and poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoates, along with...

Casariego, A.; Díaz, R.; Sergrañes, Y.; Nieto, O. M.; Durán, C.; López, N; Rodríguez, M.; González, J..

Production of biopolymers by Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from marine source BABT
Jamil,Nazia; Ahmed,Nuzhat.
Two bacterial strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa CMG607w and CMG1421 produce commercially important biopolymers. CMG607w isolated from the sediments of Lyari outfall to Arabian Sea synthesize the mcl-polyhydroxyalkanoates from various carbon sources. The production of PHAs was directly proportional to the incubation periods. Other strain CMG1421, a dry soil isolate, produced high viscous water absorbing extracellular acidic polysaccharide when it was grown aerobically in the minimal medium containing glucose or fructose or sucrose as sole source of carbon. The biopolymer had the ability to absorb water 400 times more than its dry weight. This property was superior to that of currently used non-degradable synthetic water absorbents. It acted as salt filter and...

Silva,Diego Aires da; Antonio,Regina Vasconcellos; Rossi,José Márcio; Pena,Rosinelson da Silva.
Pseudomonas oleovorans were grown on sugary cassava extracts supplemented with andiroba oil for the synthesis of a mediumchain- length polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA MCL). The concentration of total sugars in the extract was approximately: 40 g/L in culture 1, 15 g/L in cultures 2 and 3, and 10 g/L in culture 4. Supplementation with 1% andiroba oil and 0.2 g/L of (NH4)2HPO4 was performed 6.5 hours after growth in culture 3, and supplementation with the same amount of andiroba oil and 2.4 g/L of (NH4)2HPO4 was performed at the beginning of growth in culture 4. The synthesis resulted mainly in 3-hydroxy-decanoate and 3-hydroxy-dodecanoate units; 3-hydroxy-butyrate, 3-hydroxy-hexanoate; and 3-hydroxy-octanoate monomers were also produced but in smaller...

Properties of films obtained from biopolymers of different origins for skin lesions therapy BABT
Bellini,Márcia Zilioli; Oliva-Neto,Pedro de; Moraes,Ângela Maria.
In this study, the effects of the origin of xanthan used, in combination with chitosan, to prepare films for the treatment of skin lesions were evaluated. The characteristics of the films obtained with xanthan commercially available for the food industry sector and xanthan originated from a fermentation process conducted in a pilot plant were compared. Results showed that the source did not strongly interfere in many of the properties of the films, such as the mechanical properties, cytotoxicity to L929 cells, absorption of simulated body fluid and culture medium, stability in water and saline solution. Hence, even though the properties of biopolymers of different sources might vary, the films prepared with two distinct types of xanthan gum could be...

Silanisation de polysaccharides en milieu liquide ionique et réactivité d’un organoalkoxysilane vis-à-vis de nucléophiles simples : vers des hydrogels injectables pour l’ingénierie tissulaire du cartilage ArchiMer
Guillory, Xavier.
Tissue engineering is a real challenge for the treatment of cartilage pathologies. In this field, biomimetic hydrogels based on natural polymers are among the most commonly used matrices. A hydrogel made of silanized hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC-Si) is especially promising because it can be injected in cartilaginous lesions by minimally invasive surgery. However, the current synthesis of HPMC-Si is limited by the insolubility of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). This thesis work was focused on finding new synthesis conditions for the design of HPMC-Si hydrogel. In order to obtain a complete solubilization of HPMC and to improve its functionalization by the (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), the use of ionic liquids (IL), which are...

Superficial distribution of aromatic compounds and geomicrobiology of sediments from Suruí Mangrove, Guanabara Bay, RJ, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Fontana,Luiz F.; Silva,Frederico S. da; Figueiredo,Natália G. de; Brum,Daniel M.; Netto,Annibal D. Pereira; Gigueiredo Junior,Alberto G. de; Crapez,Mirian A.C..
The distribution of selected aromatic compounds and microbiology were assessed in superficial sediments from Suruí Mangrove, Guanabara Bay. Samples were collected at 23 stations, and particle size, organic matter, aromatic compounds, microbiology activity, biopolymers, and topography were determined. The concentration of aromatic compounds was distributed in patches over the entire mangrove, and their highest total concentration was determinated in the mangrove's central area. Particle size differed from most mangroves in that Suruí Mangrove has chernies on the edges and in front of the mangrove, and sand across the whole surface, which hampers the relationship between particle size and hydrocarbons. An average @ 10% p/p of organic matter was obtained, and...

Volatile fatty acids influence on the structure of microbial communities producing PHAs BJM
Ciesielski,Slawomir; Przybylek,Grzegorz.
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) can be produced by microorganisms and are a biodegradable alternative to fossil-fuel based plastics. Currently, the focus is on reducing production costs by exploring alternative substrates for PHAs production, and on producing copolymers which are less brittle than monomers. Accordingly, this study used a substrate consisting of wastewater from waste-glycerol fermentation, supplemented with different amounts of acetic and propionic acids. These substrates were used to feed mixed microbial communities enriched from activated sludge in a sequencing batch reactor. A reactor supplemented with 2 mL of acetic acid produced 227.8 mg/L of a homopolymer of hydroxybutyrate (3HB); 4 mL of acetic acid produced 279.8 mg/L 3HB; whereas 4 mL...
