Coccidiosis and performance in broilers with anticoccidial medicated feed starting at different ages Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,C.A.F.; Guidoni,A.L.; Paiva,D.P.; Ávila,V.S..
The effects of age, litter reutilization, and anticoccidial programs were studied in broilers. The oocyst counts increased with litter reutilization up to third use, and T1 (no anticoccidial drug over the entire 42-day-period) and T4 (anticoccidial medication starting from the first day) showed the highest counts. The scores for Eimeria acervulina increased up to third use of litter and declined by the fourth use. The scores for E. maxima increased from first to second litter use, and from this to third and fourth use. The scores for E. tenella increased from first and second litter use to third litter use, and declined on fourth use. With high coccidial contamination, as in third use litter, the anticoccidial medication starting from the 1st, 7th (T3) and...

CONSUMER INTENTIONS OF BUYING POULTRY MEAT UNDER PERCEIVED BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL OR TECHNOLOGICAL RISK IN FINLAND AgEcon
Heikkila, Jaakko; Pouta, Eija; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Makela, Johanna.
The study focuses on various types of food safety risks: biological (zoonoses), chemical (chemical treatment of the meat) and technological (use of genetically modified feed). The emphasis was on how the perceived risks affect the purchase intentions in the case of broiler meat. In the case of each risk products the attitude-level variables had importance in explaining the buying intentions. The heterogeneity of the respondents regarding the purchase intentions of risk products was analysed by latent class logistic regression that included all three risk products. About 60% of the respondents belonged to the group of risk avoiders in which the purchase intention of risk food was significantly lower than in the second group of risk neutrals in which 64% of...

CONSUMER WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR FARM ANIMAL WELFARE IN GERMANY - THE CASE OF BROILER AgEcon
Makdisi, Fadi; Marggraf, Rainer.
Estimating the value consumers place on farm animal welfare (FAW) can predict the extent to which consumers are ready to support policy changes aimed at improving the welfare of farm animals and developing animal-friendly production systems that can also compete on markets. This study aimed at exploring consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for broiler meat in Germany which is certified as having been produced under a system that caters for FAW. In addition, logistic and linear regression models were estimated to examine the factors affecting consumers’ decision to buy certified FAW products. The data was obtained from a survey of 300 German broiler consumers, which was designed using the contingent valuation methodology. The results showed...

Costs and Benefits of Two Alternative Salmonella Control Policies in Finnish Broiler Production AgEcon
Kangas, Susanna; Lyytikainen, Tapani; Peltola, Jukka; Ranta, Jukka; Maijala, Riitta.
In this study, costs and benefits of two Salmonella control options in broiler production were compared. The first option was to control Salmonella as set by Council Directive 92/117/EEC, so-called Zoonosis Directive. The second option was more intense control programme, the so-called Finnish Salmonella control programme. The costs of controlling Salmonella in primary and secondary production and the direct and indirect losses due to Salmonella infection in humans in both options were compared. The national control option was found to be economically feasible. One prevented loss of life covered all the control costs of the national programme.

Differences in qualitative aspects of broiler meat demand in Spain. Part 1: Home Consumption AgEcon
Colom, Ale; Gosalvez, M.; Clop-Gallart, M. Merce; Averos, X.; Juarez, L.; Gosalvez, L..
To know the Spanish homes reasons of purchasing broiler meat a survey of 1,000 families, by means of a 13 question interview, was carried out during 2007. After processing the information it was concluded that Spanish families purchase food an average of 2.34 times/week, 95% of which do not exceed 100 € and, with the exception of more than 400 € purchases, in more than 90% of which broiler meat accounts for more than 14% of the spent budget. Broiler meat is bought near home, in butcher’s shops or supermarkets, with purchases via telephone or the internet being marginal. The main declared benefits of consuming broiler meat were the low fat content, being a healthy meat, and being proper in a healthy diet. Surprisingly, 72% of interviewees did not see any...

Effect of dietary fluorine from Araxá rock phosphate on the hepatic production of cyclic-adenosine monophosphate in broilers Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rezende,M.J.M.; Veloso,J.A.F.; Turchetti-Maia,R.M.M..
The cyclic adenosine 3’, 5’-monophosphate (cAMP) production was evaluated in liver thin sections of broiler chicks fed on a experimental diet containing bicalcium phosphate or Araxá rock phosphate (ARP) as source of P, with a high content of fluorine, at different ages: from the first to the 42nd and from the 21st to the 42nd day of age. The intake of the ARP formulated diet starting from birth elicited an increase of cAMP production in broiler liver. However, when this diet was offered after the 21st day of age, the hepatic cAMP production in broilers was not significantly (P>0.05) affected, suggesting that the effect of high fluorine present in Araxá rock phosphate, on hepatic cAMP of broiler chicks depends on the age in which the experimental diet is...

Effect of using the Matrix Values for NSP-degrading enzymes on performance, water intake, litter moisture and jejunal digesta viscosity of broilers fed barley-based diet Animal Sciences
Moftakharzadeh, Seyed Adel; Moravej, Hossein; Shivazad, Mahmud.
In this study, we have evaluated the effect of three multi-enzymes nutrient matrix values and compared the results with that fed barley and the corn diets without enzyme. In entire period, addition of all enzymes to the barley-based diet significantly (p < 0.05) increased feed intake (FI) and the highest intake was for birds that fed enzyme A (p < 0.05). Overall, from 0 to 42 days, average daily gain (ADG) was significantly (p < 0.05) increased by enzyme and birds fed enzyme A had the highest body weight (p < 0.05). Generally, from 0 to 42 d of age, feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly (p < 0.05) improved when enzyme added to barley-based diet, but there were no significant differences among diets containing enzymes A and C and the...
