A segmented micro-flow analysis procedurewas described for the determination of total carbonates inalkaline solutions. The method is based on CO2 diffusionfrom an acidified sample through a silicone membrane.The gas is then collected in a coloured acceptor solution.The decolouration of the solution due to the trapped CO2 isthen determined by spectrophotometry at a wavelengthof 550 nm. The method was evaluated for the range 0–1000 mg C CO2 L–1 at a sampling frequency of 60 h–1. Themethod was repeatable (RSD better than 1%), accurate(1.5 and 2.5% for standards) and the limit of detection wasclose to 6 mg C CO2 L–1. Le processus conduisant à la précipitation de carbonates secondaires en climat périglaciaire a été étudié in situ dans différents sites du Kongsfjord (côte ouest du Spitzberg, archipel du Svalbard). Les variations chimiques et isotopiques de la phase liquide, suivies de la période estivale à la reprise en gel du sol sur un site-référence ("cote 80"), permettent de proposer un modèle de précipitation de calcite par effet de froid. Les observations micromorphologiques ainsi que les compositions chimiques et isotopiques des carbonates secondaires des différents sites montrent que ces néogenèses peuvent constituer de bons enregistreurs des conditions de milieu et de la mise en place d'une pédogenèse active dans ce système. By this process deep oceanic water, rich in CO2, and dissolved nitrates, phosphates and silicates is drawn into the pile, circulates slowly upward through the porous-permeable carbonate interior and emerges at either the reef crest or lagoon on atolls to support the primary productivity of the surficial communities, or towards the interior of the platform surface on guyots. Les données expérimentales et environnementales indiquent que la carbonatogenèse bactérienne hétérotrophe, avec ses différentes voies métaboliques, est un processus majeur et ubiquiste dans la formation des carbonates. Elles suggèrent en outre que c'est le processus quantitativement dominant et qu'ainsi l'essentiel du carbone des carbonates sédimentaires et diagénétiques est issu de matière organique initiale.
