Facultative and partial interspecies hydrogen transfer : competition for reducing equivalents IRD

Sulfate reducing bacteria of the genus DESULFOVIBRIO and homoacetogenic bacteria of the genus SPOROMUSA were sensitive to changes of hydrogen concentrations during the growth on an organic substrate. Increase of hydrogen concentrations competitively inhibited the organic substrate degradation and decrease of hydrogen concentration inhibited the respiration and the reduction of the external electron acceptor. Such hydrogen sensitive strains which seem to intermediarily produce and consume hydrogen ("hydrogen-cycling") were cultivated in the presence of a second hydrogen oxidizer. Incidence des dates de plantation sur l'infestation du manioc par les cochenilles et la mosaïque africaine en culture associée (manioc-maïs) IRD

La cochenille (#Phenoccocus manihotis$) et la mosaïque africaine du manioc (MAM) sont des agents biotiques pouvant réduire considérablement le rendement du manioc en culture pure. Le comportement du manioc vis-à-vis de ces agents biotiques est très mal connu. On sait seulement que certains facteurs comme les techniques culturales peuvent être utilisées avec facilité et succès pour limiter les dégâts occasionnés par les agents biotiques. Nous avons recherché les meilleures dates de plantation du manioc en association avec le maïs qui pourraient réduire le risque d'attaque parasitaire. Il apparaît que le manioc semé 20 jours après le maïs est moins attaqué par les cochenilles et la mosaïque africaine. (Résumé d'auteur)

Role of formate in methanogenesis from xylan by CELLULOMONAS sp. associated with methanogens and DESULFOVIBRIO VULGARIS : inhibition of the aceticlastic reaction IRD

Different methanogenic defined mixed cultures, including CELLULOMONAS sp. strain ATCC21399 as a hydrolytic and fermentative bacterium, were used to show that methane production could proceed from larchwood xylan as well as from cellulose. Via the different mixtures of bacteria used, the role of formate is described. It is shown that formate inhibits methanogenesis from acetate by pure cultures of aceticlastic methanogens. Thermophilic degradation of cellulose by a triculture of CLOSTRIDIUM THERMOCELLUM, METHANOBACTERIUM sp. and METHANOSARCINA MP (Methanogenesis ; defined mixed culture) IRD

The fermentation of cellulose at 55°C by different associations of the 3 bacteria CLOSTRIDIUM THERMOCELLUM, METHANOBACTERIUM sp. and METHANOSARCINA MP, was studied. C. THERMOCELLUM alone produced acetate, lactate, ethanol, H2 and CO2. The co-culture C. THERMOCELLUM-METHANOBACTERIUM sp. produced more acetate and less ethanol than the monoculture of CLOSTRIDIUM. METHANOSARCINA MP used acetate only in the triculture including METHANOBACTERIUM sp. When methanol was added (5 mM) to the triculture, METHANOSARCINA MP had a shorter lag phase on acetate and degraded much more acetate. Maximum methane production was 8.5 mmol CH4/g cellulose degraded. (Résumé d'auteur)

Thermophilic methanogenesis from sugar beet pulp by a defined mixed bacterial culture IRD

Thermophilic degradation of sugar beet pulp was studies in batch cultures at 55°C by different associations of bacteria, including CLOSTRIDIUM THERMOCELLUM, METHANOBACTERIUM sp. and METHANOSARCINA MP. C. THERMOCELLUM produced acetate, succinate, methanol, ethanol, H2 and CO2. The coculture of C. THERMOCELLUM and METHANOBACTERIUM sp. produced trace amounts of ethanol and succinate ; acetate concentration was about three times higher than in the C. THERMOCELLUM monoculture. The association of this coculture with METHANOSARCINA MP produced 5.5 mmol CH4/g dry weight sugar beet pulp. (Résumé d'auteur)
