A one dimensional coupled air-sea model for diagnostic studies during Toga Coare IRD

A process-oriented diagnostic model has been developed, which couples an atmospheric column model to an upper ocean model. In vertical structure and representation of physical processes, the atmospheric model resembles a single horizontal grid point of a general circulation model. It includes vertical transports by convection and turbulent mixing, radiative transfert with interactive clouds, and a complete hydrologic cycle. The ocean model is a simple mixed layer, synchronously coupled to the atmosphere through a surface energy budget computation. Time-dependent observational analyses of horizontal atmospheric transports of momentum, heat and moisture are used to force the coupled model. Evolution of the Western Pacific ocean during the 1986-1987 El Nino IRD

A series of 12 meridional transect along longitude 165°E in the Western Equatorial Pacific ocean were made between mid-1986 and mi-1988 : a time interval spanning an El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. Data collected on these cruises provide a detailed (albeit temporally sparse) view of the oceanic changes which occur in the Western Pacific during an ENSO event. The present work focuses on the evolution of the upper ocean thermohaline and zona velocity fields as revealed by high resolution hydrographic casts and direct near surface velocity measurements. Hydrological effects on the air-ocean coupled system IRD

The ocean and atmosphere are driven by fluxes of momentum, heat, and water mas. The importance of fluxes of momentum and heat is well recognized by both meteorologists and oceanographers. The hydrological cycle is, however, only given considerable attention in atmospheric models since the latent heat release is an important source of the atmospheric general circulation. The hydrological cycle is given less attention in ocean models although it is realized that evaporation and precipitation are contributors to the surface buoyancy flux wich determines the depth of mixing and drives the thermoaline circulation.

Le phénomène El Nino/Oscillation Australe (ENSO) est le mode couplé océan/atmosphère prépondérant de la variabilité climatique basse fréquence à l'échelle du globe. Dans le cadre du programme internationale TOGA (Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere), certaines approches théoriques ont proposé des explications à cette variabilité. Intraseasonal variability : a critical component of ENSO ? IRD

The impact of intraseasonal variability on ENSO is studied in the context of the Zebiak and Cane (1987) coupled atmosphere-ocean model, and an idealized representation intraseasonal forcing. The effects of the parameterized forcing are examined in both simulation and forecast experiments, with similar results : the intraseasonal variability generally plays a minor role in altering the model behavior. Despite the uncertainties inherent in both the coupled model and the specified forcing, the results clearly suggest that intraseasonal variability is not an essential component of ENSO. Large-scale current and thermohaline structures along 156°E during the COARE intensive observation period IRD

From December 1992 to February 1993, 18 meridional sections of temperature, salinity, and current were collected along 156°E, from 5°S to 5°N, during the Intensive Observation Period of the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment. The average conditions were characteristic of the ongoing El Nino event, with a relatively shallow thermocline and fresh surface waters.
