An outbreak of Candida spp. bloodstream infection in a tertiary care center in Bogotá, Colombia BJID

Several cases of Candida bloodstream infections were documented from June to October 2004 at a tertiary care center in Bogotá, Colombia. Since no cases of candidemia had occurred during the preceding four months, an outbreak was declared. As a result, a microbiological study, a revision of infection control practices and a case-control study were performed. In all, 18 cases of candidemia were ascertained. Extracts from the dried pericarp of Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae) fruits were investigated for their antifungal activity against clinical isolates of yeasts Candida albicans and C. non-albicans from vaginal secretions of women with Vulvovaginal Candidiasis. Four clinical isolates of C. albicans, a single clinical isolated of each of the species C. parapsilosis, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and the strain of C. albicans ATCC 90028 were used. Antimicrobial activity of bergenin from Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec Acta Amazonica

Endopleura uchi (Huber) Cuatrec. is an Amazon species traditionally used as treatment for inflammations and female disorders. Bergenin was isolated from ethyl acetate fraction of bark of E. uchi by using column chromatography over sephadex LH-20 and then silica gel 60 flash. Its structure was identified on the basis of its NMR spectra. Biofilms: microbes and disease BJID

Bacteria that attach to surface aggregate in a hydrated polymeric matrix of their own synthesis to form biofilms. These represent microbial societies with their own defense and communication system. Transitioning from acute to chronic infection is frequently associated with biofilm formation.Bacteria in biofilms are innately more resistant to antimicrobial agents. The presence of indwelling medical devices increases the risk for biofilm formation and subsequent infection. The current antibiotic therapies are of limited effectiveness in resolving biofilms infection.This review attempts to discuss the stages in biofilm formation, their pathogenic mechanisms, effect of antimicrobial agents, detection and eradication of the biofilms.

Antisera were developed in rabbits after challenge with intracellular antigens of Candida albicans, C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis. Microorganism catalase has been correlated with virulence, resistance to drugs and immunogenicity. The intracellular catalase is consistently present in strains of Candida and in this paper, the enzyme activity was analysed by PAGE after exposition to antisera. O gênero Zephyranthes compreende cerca de 65 espécies de distribuição principalmente neotropical, das quais, 36 são reconhecidas para o Brasil. É um grupo cariologicamente variável, com números cromossômicos desde 2n=10, em Zephyranthes seubertii E. P. Hume [1], até 2n=ca. 200, em um híbrido horticultural interespecífico [2]. Apresenta registro cromossômico para 54 espécies, com ocorrência de variação cromossômica numérica decorrente de poliploidia, aneuploidia e disploidia [3]. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o cariótipo de Z. candida e Z. rosea, visando estudar as semelhanças e diferenças numéricas e estruturais entre os seus cariótipos, assim como, identificar os mecanismos de evolução cromossomos envolvidos na formação dos mesmos.

Estudou-se o comportamento de leveduras do gênero Candida a antifungicos, pela determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e da Concentração Fungicida Mínima (CFM) "in vitro"de 30 cepas de Candida frente aos antifungicos: miconazol, cetoconazol e anfotericina B. Empregou-se o método de diluição em meio líquido e os antifungicos foram diluídos visando proporcionar concentrações a partir de 0,06 a 128 μg/mL. O inóculo foi padronizado ajustando-se a suspensão para conter 1X 106 ufc/mL. A concentração para a qual houve maior convergência de cepas foi de 1 μg/mL (26,5%) para anfotericina B. HIV-1 anti-retroviral drug effect on the C. albicans hyphal growth rate by a Bio-Cell Tracer system BJM

Declining incidence of oropharyngeal candidosis and opportunistic infections over recent years can be attributed to the use of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART). Infection with C. albicans generally involves adherence and colonization of superficial tissues. During this process, budding yeasts are able to transform to hyphae and penetrate into the deep tissue. Using the biocell tracer system, C. albicans hyphal growth was dynamically observed at the cellular level. Ritonavir was effective in the inhibition of hyphal growth with growth rate of 0.8 mum/min. This study showed the in vitro effect of HIV anti-retroviral drug on the growth rate of the C. albicans hyphae.
