Analysis of the Purse Seine Fishery of Mauritius, 1990 - 1994, and Comparison of Catch Rate and Species Composition of Catches of Mauritian Purse Seiners to Those of the French Fleet OceanDocs
Norungee, D.; Lim Shung, C..
The catches made by purse seiners on schools associated with logs constitute more than half of the total catch of the purse-seine fishery of the western Indian Ocean. In the purse-seine fishery on log-associated schools of tuna, either natural logs are spotted by vessels and are marked with radio beacons, or artificial logs are set at sea to concentrate the tuna prior to fishing operations. The first attempt at commercial purse seining was successfully carried out in the Indian Ocean in 1979 by a joint-venture Mauritian vessel using the same technique as the Japanese, who had traditionally fished on schools associated with logs in the Pacific Ocean. They started fishing in the Indian Ocean after experimental purse-seine fishing was conducted by the Japan...

Impact of technological creep on fishing effort and fishing mortality, for a selection of European fleets ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul; Andersen, Bo; Caillart, B.; Eigaard, Ole; Guyader, Olivier; Hovgaard, Holger; Iriondo, Ane; Le Fur, Fanny; Sacchi, Jacques; Santurtun, Marina.
Face-to-face interviews were conducted to identify the main changes in gear and vessel technology that may have improved the fishing efficiency of a number of French, Danish, and Basque fleets over the past few decades. Important changes include the gradual appearance of twin trawls (Danish and French trawlers) and trammel-nets (French gillnetters), and the increased polyvalence of Basque bottom trawlers. The results suggest that fishing effort descriptors that are not traditionally measured (gear type, groundrope type, length of net used per day, headline length, crew size, number of winch or net drums) may have a substantial impact on catch rates. Adjusting fishing effort using such descriptors may generally improve the relationship between fishing...

Bertignac, Michel.
Multiple correspondance analysis and hierarchical ascending classification were used to study catch rate variations in the French deep-sea trawler fleet between 1972 and 1989. The use of these methods clarifies the sometimes complex relationships between catch rates of the main species landed within the total catch and allows a classification of the typical catch rate structures over this period. Factors such as year and fishing areas are those which best explain the observed variations; seasonal variations play a minor role. Catch rates increased and more species were caught between 1972 and 1989. The study shows the relationship between these developments and changes in fishing effort allocation strategies and in fleet structure. Trawlers which exploited...

Standardized Catch Rates for Yellowfin (Thunnus Albacares) from the Spanish Pure Seine Fleet (1984-1995) OceanDocs
Soto, M.; Morón, J.; Pallares, P..
The Spanish purse seine fleet operates in a wide area of the Indian Ocean since 1984. A logbooks system provides detailed information of catches (set by set) and effort. Together with this information, an intensive work of interview during 4 years (1994-1997) has provided technical equipment data. These data have been used to estimate standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) indices of abundance for yellowfin from the Indian Ocean. Standardized catch rates have been estimated using the Generalized Linear Model (GLM) approach. The model proposed includes factors related with the stock abundance together with factors related with catchability changes.
