Dao, Jean-claude; Gerard, Andre; Buestel, Dominique.
Research on the black scallop followed that on the king scallop. Indeed, over the 1973-1975 " spadework » period, it has been demonstrated that the roadsted of Brest was: - an overexploited king scallop deposit; the broodstock not being able to ensure a satisfying renewal of the species. - a black scallop production deposit (hundreds of tonnes). In parallel, the collection trials provided null results for the king scallop but very interesting results for the black scallop (thousands of spats per collector). From 1976 onwards, the spat collecting operations did not focus on king scallop juveniles anymore, but on black scallop.

Robert, Rene; Trut, Gilles; Laborde, Jean-louis; Miner, Philippe.
Until 1960, the black scallop Chlamys varia (Linné, 1758) was largely distributed over the French Atlantic coast. Nowadays, most of the deposits are gone. Since controlled mollusc reproduction techniques are now relatively mastered, some reimplatation attempts have been conducted on a number of oyster culture sites, including the Arcachon Bay, from 1989 to 1992. Despite some good results in hatchery and nursery, the rearing attempts failed. If some good growth rates have been monitored in the Arcachon Bay over these three years, these performances have been frustrated by very high mortality rates occurring shortly after the setting up of the farms. Although this species is known to be relatively sensitive to environmental factors, the hydrobiological...

Perodou, Dominique; Latrouite, Daniel.

Trut, Gilles; Robert, Rene; Laborde, Jean-louis.
Until 1960, the Black scallop Chlamys varia was relatively abundant along the French Atlantic coasts. Today most of these natural beds have disappeared. Because mollusc hatchery and nursery techniques have been mastered, the reintroduction of this species, under control, was carried out in several areas and particularly in the bay of Arcachon, from 1989 to 1992. Good results were obtained in hatchery and nursery but the development of the juveniles in the natural fields was poor. The growth of Chlamys varia was satisfactory but heavy mortalities were rapidly recorded which could not be related to the hydrobiological conditions. This species seems to be very sensitive to short emersion and removal operations which are incompatible with aquaculture processes.
