Cucurbits have great economic, nutritional and social importance in the Brazilian semiarid region. In this region, many factors can result in reduced productivity of these crops, especially fungal and viral diseases. Therefore, knowledge of cucurbits is crucial for proper disease management. The objective of this work was to identify the major diseases of cucurbits grown in some municipalities in the Hinterland of the state of Pernambuco. Thus, plant samples were collected with symptoms in crops in the municipalities of Salgueiro, Serra Talhada, Floresta, Petrolândia, Ibimirim, Custódia and Inajá. A questionnaire was also applied to gather information about the production profile of producers. Seven fungal pathogens infecting cucurbits were identified:... |

Six new Citrullus haplotypes were identified at tRNA-Val – rps12 locus of chloroplast (cpDNA) genome in colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis), citron melon (Citrullus lanatus citroides) and watermelon (Citrullus lanatus lanatus) cultivars. Ancient-DNAs (aDNA) of seed remains excavated from two sites of the Middle Ages (13th-14th Cent. Debrecen and 15th Cent. Budapest, Hungary) and a herbarium samples from the 19th Cent. (Pannonhalma, Hungary) were also investigated to track cpDNA evolution back to the 13th-14th centuries with the final aim of molecular and morphological reconstruction of old varieties. Medieval samples showed molecular similarity to current cultivars ‘Belyj dlinnij’, ‘Csárdaszállás’ ‘Klondike’, and ‘Kecskeméti vörös’ indicating the oldest... |

Cucurbit powdery mildew (CPM), which is caused most frequently by two obligate erysiphaceous ectoparasites (Golovinomyces cichoracearum, Podosphaera xanthii), occurs on field and glasshouse cucurbit crops worldwide. We review the current state of understanding of variation for pathogenicity of these two pathogens at the pathotype and race levels, and propose for use by the international CPM research, breeding, seed and production communities: 1) two sets of differential cucurbit genotypes for the identification of CPM pathotypes and races, and 2) an objective, efficient, uniform, comprehensive coded system for meaningful, concise designation of CPM pathotypes (sextet code) and races (septet code). The proposed set of pathotype differentials includes six... |

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a reação de genótipos de melancia ao Fusarium solani f. sp. cucurbitae raça 1 (FSC), causador da podridão-seca, avaliou-se 13 genótipos de Citrullus spp. (ES31646, ES31654/1, ES31654/2, ES31646/19, ES31612/8, ES3015, ES31661/8, ES31565, ES31662/2, ES31652, cv. Crimson Sweet, cv. ES31708-C e cv. ES31709-C). A inoculação foi efetuada aos 13 dias após a semeadura, com disco de meio de cultura contendo estruturas do patógeno. |

Identification of resistant germplasmsis crucial for crop breeding. The aim of this study was to determine the reaction of accessions of watermelon plants to Meloidogine enterolobii using two experiments . In the first experiment, 20 accessions were evaluated, and in the second, the four most promising accessions were selected in the first experiment and two controls. Both experiments were implemented under a completely randomized design with ten replications. Each parcel consisted of a plastic pot containing autoclaved soil inoculated with 2,200 eggs of M. enterolobii. Among the variables studied, the egg number and reproduction factor showed a high positive correlation. The subsamples indicated a wide variation among and within each accession (p <... |
