Recent projections of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture for the next 12 years, based on the recent demand for biofuels, indicate that the area planted with sugar-cane and soy bean will increase 66.6%. In this land use scenario, agriculture development will not be ruled only by food production, but also by the production of biofuels. In the context of climatic changes, the observation of these scenarios is important to inform land use policies and also to evaluate the contribution of fitomass in carbon balance and storage. Embrapa is looking for answers to inquiries on how global warming will alter the current national agricultural configuration. However, information about the importance and potential for carbon sequestration by agrosystems is still... |

Despite uncertainties as to the real causes, there is a large amount of evidence of climatic change on Earth. With the objective of investigating changes in extreme air temperatures, as well as the local effects of these changes, eight data sets, collected throughout the State of Ceará in Brazil, were analyzed. Four series of data were obtained from the semi-arid region, three from the coastal zone, and one from a mountainous region. To quantify the changes that occurred during the study period, variations in maximum and minimum temperatures were calculated in relation to the mean of each data series. The annual rates of temperature increase were estimated from the angular coefficients of the best-fit lines. The results showed that although there are... |

Dark subsurface horizons, with properties similar to the sombric horizon characterized by the USA Soil Taxonomy, are frequent in Southern Brazil. The genesis of this horizon is controversial and poorly understood. This study aimed to describe the occurrence of sombric-like horizons in Ultisols in the South of Santa Catarina State, at low altitudes, and suggest possible processes of humus transference, accumulation and persistence in these horizons. Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of four Ultisols were evaluated; three were sampled in a toposequence, and another representative one in an isolated profile (RSP). The dark subsurface horizons coincide with the AB and BA transitional genetic horizons; they are acid, low in base saturation, and... |

In the recent past, climatic changes and variations have occurred in Nigeria with resulting adverse socio-economic impact. From these experiences, it is inferred that the expected change in global climate will have far reaching disastrous consequences for Nigeria if appropriate anticipatory technical and policy Measure are not taken. More recent results from various models based on an eventual warming from a doubling of greenhouse gases of between 1.5 and 5oC by the end of the 21st century predict an acceleration of the eustatic rise in sea level from 1.2-1.5mm/yr. over the last hundred year s to 4 – 6mm/yr. although previous estimates were much higher [e.g.56–3.68m by the end of the 21 century] on the low lying Coastal zone of Nigeria, which is rich in... |

Glyphosate resistant transgenic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mettill] expresses a glyphosate insensitive EPSPS (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase). This enzyme is involved in important secondary metabolism pathways, including lignin biosynthesis. Thus, differences in lignin content and growth between susceptible (OC14) and glyphosate-resistant soybean may be observed. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between growth and lignin content of roots in transgenic and OC14 soybean cultivated at high temperatures. Seeds from the OC14 soybean and its transgenic cultivar, CD213RR, were germinated at 25, 27.5, 30 and 32.5 °C. After 3 d, seedlings were cultivated in Hoagland half-strength nutrient solution during 12 h photoperiods and at... |

This study aims to evaluate the leaf concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus correlated to the production of photoassimilates in beans plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under high [CO2] and drought stress. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa (Brazil), during the period from April to July 2009, by using open-top chambers equipped with CO2 injection system. The drought stress was applied, through the irrigation suspension, during the period from flowering to maturation. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split-plot scheme with four replication, where the plots with plants grown in [CO2] of 700 mg L-1 and [CO2] environment of 380 mg L-1 and the subplots with plants with and without drought stress. The results were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey... |
