Castor cake as organic fertilizer to control gastrointestinal nematodes. Repositório Alice
MARANGUAPE, J. S.; POMPEU, R. C. F. F.; VIEIRA, L. da S.; SOUZA, H. A. de; OLIVEIRA, E. L. de; SOUSA, A. M. P.; COSTA, C. dos S.; SANTOS, M. A. dos; PEREIRA, P. L.; SALLES, H. O..
Abstract: Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the factors that discourages farmers from raising small ruminants in cultivated pastures. To validate a soil treatment strategy to control the free-living stages of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), castor cake (CC) was used as a fertilizer on a pasture where sheep grazed on guinea grass under continuous stocking. On day zero, the pasture was divided into three paddocks, contaminated by GIN and treated, respectively, with CC divided into two applications (2CC1/2), CC in a single application (CC1) and organic compost in a single application (control). On day 21, eight GIN-free sheep were placed in each paddock. On day 58, significant differences (P<0.05) were observed: reduction of up to 66.10% in...

Cattle production supplemented on signal grass pastures during the rainy season Animal Sciences
Santos, Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Santos, Anselmo de Deus; Fonseca, Dilermando Miranda da; Sousa, Braulio Maia de Lana; Gomes, Virgilio Mesquita; Sousa, Diogo Olímpio Chaves de.
The effects of four supplement doses (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg animal-1 day-1) on pasture characteristics and on cattle production on Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk pastures in continuous stocking with variable stocking rate were assessed. Experimental design comprised completely randomized blocks with two replications. Concentrate supplementation did not influence mass (4141 kg ha-1 of DM) and production rate of forage (97.6 kg ha-1 day-1 of DM), morphological components and nutrition value in hand-plucked forage. Similarly, the number of live (1.607 tillers m-²) and dead (636 tillers m-²) tillers was not affected by concentrate supplementation. There were linear increases in animal performance (from 0.70 to 1.13 kg animal-1 day-1), stocking rate (1.9 to 3.8...

Dynamics and stability of Marandu grass tillers in monocrop systems and babassu palm silvopastoral systems Agronomy
Araújo, Ricardo Alves de; Rodrigues, Rosane Cláudia; Costa, Clésio Santos; Santos, Francisco Naysson Sousa; Lima, Antonio José Temístocles; Rodrigues, Marcônio Martins.
This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics, population density of tillers and stability index of Urochloa brizantha in silvopastoral systems composed of babassu palm trees in the Pre-Amazon region. Four systems consisting of different densities of palm trees (80, 131, and 160 palms ha-1) and a monocrop were evaluated. The rates at which the basal tillers appeared in systems with 131 and 160 palms ha-1 were similar to each other and were slower compared to the monocrop pasture and the system with 80 palms ha-1. Despite the variations, the stability index was always higher than 1.0, which infers a compensatory mechanism between tiller appearance and mortality rate, since monocrop pastures and systems with 80 palms ha-1 have a higher rate of tissue...

Signal grass structure at different sites of the same pasture under three grazing intensities - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v35i1.11801 Animal Sciences
Santos, Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Colegiado de Zootecnia, Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco; Fonseca, Dilermando Miranda da; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Gomes, Virgilio Mesquita; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Pimentel, Róberson Machado; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Albino, Ronan Lopes; Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Silva, Simone Pedro da; Universidade Federal de Viçosa.
The experiment was conducted to evaluate Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk at different sites of the same pasture featuring varying grazing intensities (under grazed, properly grazed and overgrazed). The pasture was managed under continuous stocking using 200-kg cattle and grass height kept at about 25 cm. The randomized block design was used, with three replications. Sward height (38.0 cm) and extended plant height (85.2 cm) were greater at the under grazed site. The falling index was lower at the properly grazed site (1.28). At the under grazed site, the masses of green leaf blade (3442 kg ha-1 DM), green stem (8370 kg ha-1 DM), green forage (11812 kg ha-1 DM) and total forage (14137 kg ha-1 DM) were higher when compared to the overgrazed and properly...
