AN ANALYSIS OF COSTS BY SIZE OF JAIL FOR SELECTED COUNTIES IN IOWA AgEcon
Edelman, Mark A.; Mayer, Adrian J..
Officials from eight counties selected according to jail size were interviewed. Parameters from site visits were used to estimate jail costs. The jails selected ranged in capacity from 5 to 41 prisoners. In addition, costs from the sample of local jails were compared to costs from studies of larger jails and state prisons. Jails with 5 to 41 bed capacity exhibited a U-shaped cost curve. Jail costs varied from a low of $35.20 per prisoner day for the 10 bed jail to $56.63 per prisoner day for the 40 bed jail. Therefore, costs vary by $21.43 per prisoner day for the sample of local jails examined in this study. The threshold economies of size achieved by smaller jails is due primarily to the shared staffing systems, a high degree of integration between...

Application of BDRM Theory in the Two-AXIS Underwater Channel. OceanDocs
Zhang, Lin; Da, Lianglong; Lu, Xiaoting.
Two-axis underwater channel often exists in deep ocean. Because of the coupling between surface channel and SOFAR channel, sound propagation in the two-axis underwater channel is complex and so its calculations of acoustic fields are difficult. The beam-displacement ray-mode (BDRM) theory is a normal mode method for propagation modeling in the common horizontally stratified shallow water. We improve the theory, proposing a new method for computing the upper boundary reflection coefficient, and apply it to calculate the acoustic fields of two-axis underwater channel. Transmission losses in the two-axis underwater channel are calculated by the BDRM theory. The results are in good agreement with the KRAKEN code and the computational speed excels those of the...

Systematic notes on Asian birds. 47. Blyth’s ’Catalogue of the Birds in the Museum Asiatic Society’ and his 1849 Supplemental Note, with historical comments Naturalis
Dickinson, E.C..
Blyth’s Catalogue is sometimes cited from 1849 and sometimes from 1852. Both dates can be found in Peters’s Check-list, each, in different volumes, appearing to be accepted. Consequently and inconsistently both are found in other works. The cover is dated 1849. The evidence, however, shows that while much was printed in 1849 publication was not before September 1852. Meanwhile Blyth’s ’Supplemental Note’ appeared in 1849. Most of the new taxa described in that were described then to ensure that Blyth’s names, already in his proof sheets for his Catalogue, obtained priority. In Peters’s Check-list most of these names have been cited correctly, i.e. from his Supplemental Note. However, a few exceptions need attention and their dates need to be corrected in...
