Integration of additional leguminous living mulch and cover crop species holds a great potential for reducing external inputs and improving agricultural sustainability. However, changes towards legume rich crop rotations raises concerns as many of the species of interest share important soil-borne pathogens with some important main crops such as peas, beans and cereals. The pathogenicity towards the spring pea variety Santana was determined for 67 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, Didymella spp., Phoma medicaginis and Phoma spp. obtained from seemingly healhty roots of Trifolium subterraneum, T. repens, Vicia villosa and V. sativa. Only one isolate of F. solani and two isolates of Phoma spp. were nonpathogenic. F. avenaceum isolates... |

To control late blight in organic potato production currently copper fungicides are used. Due to problematic aspects of copper fungicides, it's necessary to develop alternative methods to control Phytophthora infestans. In this context also the use of cover crops and particularly the method biofumigation are discussed. Because there's barely literature about the effectiveness of biofumgiation in organic potato production, the method is evaluated with laboratory experiments and field trials. Brassicacea have the potential to inhibit in vitro the growth of P. infestans, but in an one year field experiment it wasn't possible to observe positive effects to late blight infestation and tuber yields. |

The infestation of peas by aphids and moths was assessed in winter pea sole crops and compared to spring pea sole and winter pea-triticale intercrops. The field experiments were conducted in Northern Germany in the growing seasons 2009-2011. The maximum number of pea aphids per plant and the percentage of attacked plants were lower in semi-leafless and normal-leafed winter pea sole crops than in semi-leafless spring peas. Pea moth larvae damaged 6-32 % of seeds in winter peas and 40-55 % of seeds in spring peas. Winter pea-triticale intercropping reduced the attack of pea aphids, whereas no beneficial effect of intercropping was observed concerning moth-damaged peas. Owing to the earlier maturity, winter peas were less susceptible to pea pest attacks than... |

This module aims at providing general information about common weeds, by presenting basic knowledge to be acquired before designing a plan for weed suppression (e.g. intercropping options). It also tries to raise the awareness about different mechanical weed control options and cropping systems that suppress weed incidence. Provided tools explain the factors that should be considered in a weed control strategy adoption. This module is targeting a wide range of categories of students, farmers, advisors …etc. The module is basically based on a PowerPoint presentation containing a theoretical background and supported by related specific tools (practice abstracts, leaflets, guidelines, data calculation tools, videos, books, reports, web pages etc.) taken from... |

The appropriate combination of crops and green manures prevents spread of perennial weeds and increases crop yields and quality. Weed-suppressing crop rotations are absolutely essential for sustainable organic arable farming. Practical recommendation Basic rules • Implement green manures, such as clover or lucerne, in at least 20 % of the rotation. • Do not grow more than 50 % of cereals with low weed competitiveness in the rotation. Do not cultivate such crops for more than 2 consecutive years. • In fields with prevalent high weed pressure cultivate only crops with high weed competitiveness. Points to consider in case of high weed pressure: • Do not grow grain legumes where perennial weeds are a problem. Late harvest in combination with loose... |

Conservation agriculture is arising as an alternative to conventional agriculture with the aim to have a reduced impact on the environment. This includes the use of cover crops to conserve soil quality by limiting soil erosion, adding organic matter, and enhancing soil nutrient content, as well as water availability, which are all factors that can greatly influence the presence of soil organisms. In the current study, we investigated whether winter cover crops can enhance the persistence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) over the winter season. In a first trial we augmented EPN populations in plots without (bared) and with the cover crops, pea (Pisum sativum) or mustard (Brassica juncea). In late autumn, individual mini-plots in each of the three... |
