Association of secondary traits with yield in maize F 1 's Ciência Rural
Nardino,Maicon; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Baretta,Diego; Konflanz,Valmor Antonio; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Follmann,Diego Nicolau; Caron,Braulio Otomar.
ABSTRACT: The objective was to identify phenotypic and genotypic associations, and cause-and-effect relations of secondary components on primary components to establish criteria in the indirect selection process for maize. Partial diallel crosses were conducted in Clevelândia. F1's were evaluated in five environments. For the purpose of increasing the yield of corn grain, breeders should seek to reduce the characters distance from the last node to the first branch of the tassel, tassel length and number of branches. The indirect selection for distance from the last node to the first branch of the tassel would be effective to increase the grain yield. The selection for smaller leaf angle, larger stem diameter and thousand grain weight are favorable for...

Correlation and path analysis in components of grain yield of cowpea genotypes Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Almeida,Wener Santos de; Fernandes,Francisco Ronaldo Belém; Teófilo,Elizita Maria; Bertini,Cândida Hermínia Campos de Magalhães.
This study aimed at verifying the effect of genotype x environment interaction on the relative contribution of yield components and final production of different cowpea genotypes. For this, data of yield components of 22 cowpea genotypes were evaluated in four environments in the State of Ceará. A one-way ANOVA tested the variability between genotypes and the Scott-Knott test compared the mean values of the genotypes. The correlations were estimated by a path analysis. A differentiated response from the genotypes to each environment was observed for all traits examined, indicating the need to perform the test for each situation separately. The number of pods per plant is the yield component with great potential of genetic gain in additional cycles of...

IMPACTS OF EXHCHANGE RATE ON TERMS OF TRADE AND VOLUME OF TRADE AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Direct and indirect effects of exchange rates on foreign and home prices may induce a change in terms of trade and volume of trade. In particular, the price effect in substitutability between foreign and home products and endogeneity of the foreign price provide evidence for the indirect impact of the exchange rate on home price. Furthermore, elasticity of substitution and degree of returns to scale influence the impact of the exchange rate on terms of trade and trade volume. In an empirical examination of the Korean beef market, this study found a decrease in terms of trade and an increase in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar depreciates, and an increase in terms of trade and a decrease in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar appreciates. However, the...

Trade-off between Economic Revitalization and Social Capital: Application of Structural Equation Model in Japan AgEcon
Kunimitsu, Yoji.
An income inequality has been expanded in Japan and some policy is highly needed to revitalize rural areas. This study aims to show causative factors on regional satisfaction level by the estimation of the structural equation model (SEM) with data of each town in Yamagata and Yamaguchi prefectures. Results demonstrate that (i) both the economic situations and social capital (represented by trust, altruistic moral and human network) positively affected the satisfaction level, but there is a trade-off between these effects, (ii) public facilities can increase satisfaction level as long as these facilities are built with consideration of residents' needs and quality, and (iii) the economic factor and social capital have indirect effects, affecting to...
