Among the biological quality elements monitored under the WFD, salt marshes are still not assessed in France. To evaluate ways to develop an assessment tool for this biological quality element, methodologies already applied by other member states have been identified and analyzed. Despite a very thorough job in assessing the ecological status of salt marshes, no pressure-impact relationship has been demonstrated. In addition, the pressures identified are related to the hydromorphological characteristics. A study was conducted to study saltmarshes not as a biological quality element but as a hydromorphological quality element. In the context of the WFD, the assessment of the coastal water bodies and transition is required from different biological parameters including opportunistic macroalgae. This implies on the one hand the development of appropriate methods and the other hand controlling that the environmental quality is established in connection with an identified pressure. This assessment is currently based on monitoring of opportunistic green macroalgae. Nevertheless, massive developments of other algae, including Pylaiella littoralis and Gracilaria sp. may be involved in some water bodies. The index used by France to assess the quality of coastal water bodies of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), for the Channel-Atlantic coast and for the quality element "soft substratum benthic invertebrates" is the M-AMBI. In their work, Sigovini et al. (2013) compare several methods of calculating M-AMBI and alternative indices with the values of M-AMBI. Their results show strong correlations between the values of the M-AMBI and those of the proposed alternatives. This study aims at showing the potential of « water colour » data derived from satellite imagery to optimise the monitoring of coastal waters within the WFD, with the French Mediterranean as a study area. The work is focused on one specific parameter, the surface chlorophyll-A (chl-a) concentration of which a monthly atlas for reference to “normal” values is provided, which consists of : (i) the monthly chl-a median computed from satellite data of 2003, 2004 and 2005 ; (ii) the integration in space of these values, represented by their average over the WFD water masses (except those of very small size) ; (iii) an indicator of the spatial variability of the chl-a through the spatial standard deviation within each water mass. Le Réseau Hydrologique Littoral Normand (RHLN) est financé par l’Agence de l’Eau Seine-Normandie, la Région Normandie et l’Ifremer. Il permet d’observer les niveaux d’eutrophisation et les phénomènes associés pour comprendre leur déclenchement et évolution, d’évaluer la qualité des eaux pour les Directives ou Conventions européennes (DCE, OSPAR, DCSMM), d’améliorer les connaissances via des projets de recherche, et permettre la validation des modèles. Ce rapport réalise la synthèse des résultats obtenus en 2016, seizième année depuis le début du suivi en Normandie, ainsi que pour la période 2011-2016 pour la préparation de l’Etat des Lieux 2019 de la Directive Cadre sur l’Eau.
