Bothrops alternatus ENVENOMING IN YOUNG DOGS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
PEREZ,O. A. DE; KOSCINCZUK,P.; FLINTA,S. M.; MAIDANA,H. R.; SANCHEZ NEGRETTE,M..
Bothrops alternatus venom was intramuscularly inoculated (3 mg/kg) into 12 dogs, 30 to 65 days old. Spontaneous bleeding commenced twenty minutes later. Blood samples obtained 3 and 20 minutes after venom inoculation presented spontaneous clotting formation. Plasmatic fibrinogen decreased within 3 minutes. Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and one-stage prothrombin time (PT) were found. Plasma did not coagulate 40 minutes after inoculation. Platelet counts did not vary but their function was altered. Histopathology pointed out severe muscular necrosis and massive hemorrhage in the inoculation area. Regional ganglia showed intense hemorrhage. The 45 and 65-day-old animals showed alveolar thickening of the septum and generalized congestion, but the...

Can Dogs Alleviate the Desolation Created by Having Fewer Children? An Empirical Study in the Japanese Context OAK
Kawata, Yukichika.
Over the last several decades, in Japan, the young population (YP; less than 14 years old) has decreased whereas the number of registered dogs (RDs) has increased as a result of various socioeconomic factors. The total sum of YP and RD has remained virtually constant since the early 1990s. In this paper, we employ veterinary economics analyses to empirically examine the following hypothesis: the decrease in the number of children being reared has been compensated for by the increase in the number of pets. We find a statistically significant relationship between RD and the total fertility rate, which confirms that our hypothesis is valid in the case of Japan.

Canine distemper: epidemiological findings of 250 cases Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
HEADLEY,Selwyn Arlington; GRAÇA,Dominguita Lühers.
A review of the number of dogs submitted for necropsy at the Department of Veterinary Pathology of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, between 1985-1997 has shown that 11.7% (250/2136) had lesions and inclusion bodies characteristic of infection by canine distemper virus (CDV). Most of these cases occurred during the winter months in dogs that were less than 1.5 year old, which were submitted by residents from the city of Santa Maria. Canine distemper is considered endemic in this city. Significant differences in susceptibility were not observed between males and females. Mongrel dogs were super-represented, but dolichocephalic breeds were more affected than brachycephalic ones. Distemper encephalopathy with typical CDV inclusion bodies, especially...

Canine giardiosis in an urban area: a possible source on infection of man OAK
NikoliĆ, Aleksandra; DimitrijeviĆ, Sanda; BobiĆ, Branko.
Giardia lamblia is a commonly identified intestinal pathogen protozoan in humans in Serbia, since 8.0% of the children are infected in Belgrade area. In light of the zoonotic potential of Giardia infection, a total of 167 dogs were examined for giardiasis in the same urban area. Six of 81 dogs (7.4%) from urban homes, 14 of 75 dogs (18.6%) from the pound, and four of 11 dogs (36.4%) from the farm were excreting Giardia cysts. Thus, the overall prevalence of infection in dogs in the Belgrade area was 14.4%. Of six household pets excreting Giardia, five owners and all 16 of their family members were Giardia-negative, while in case of one dog both the owner and the only other family member were Giardia- positive. The data demonstrate that a potential animal...

Comparison of five extenders for canine semen freezing Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
SANTOS,Silvia Edelweiss Crusco dos; VANNUCCHI,Camila Infantosi; SATZINGER,Sandra; ASSUMPÇÃO,Mayra Elena Ortiz D’Avila; VISINTIN,José Antonio.
Semen was collected from six stud dogs to compare five extenders in the semen freezing process. Each ejaculate was divided in five parts and added to tris-fructose-citric acid, glicine, lactose, skim milk and tris-fructose-citrate extenders. The semen was diluted at 37°C in extenders without glycerol, in the ratio 1:1 and cooled for 60 minutes to reach a 5°C temperature. Then, extenders with glycerol in the ratio of 2:1 were added to give the final prefreezing concentration of 4% of glycerol. The diluted semen with the cryoprotectant was maintained for a further 60 minutes in refrigeration to equilibrate the spermatozoa in the glycerol and packaged in 0.5 ml plastic straws. The straws were maintained for 30 minutes in vapor, plunged and stored in liquid...

Amo,Alicia N. del; Aprea,Adriana N.; Petruccelli,Miguel A..
Gross and light microscopic studies of 100 stool specimens of young dogs were carried out. Viral particles were detected in 31% of the analized samples using negative contrast electron microscopic diagnostic technique. Parvo-like virus, corona-like virus and other non-identified particles were observed in 17%, 7% and 2% of the samples, respectively. Parvo-like and corona-like viruses were found together in 5% of the samples. More than half (58.82%) of the positive parvo-like virus specimens were from dogs aged between 6 weeks and 6 months. 42.85% of the corona-like virus positive samples were detected in dogs between 6 weeks and 6 months and a similar percentage was found in dogs older than six months of age. Dual infections with parvo-like and corona-like...

Diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus in dogs and management of long term insulin therapy with glycosilated hemoglobin level evaluation MV&Z
de Marco, Viviani; do Amaral, Ricardo Coutinho; Jericó, Márcia Marques; Silva, Ricardo Duarte; Simões, Denise Maria.
Twenty-four dogs, of different ages and breed (mongrels or not) were studied. The objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of determining glycosilated hemoglobin for the diagnosis and future monitoring of diabetic dogs. Animals were divided in a control group (12 healthy animals presenting glycemia levels ranging from 80 to 120 mg/dl, during fasting), and a diabetic group (12 animals presenting glycosuria and glycemia levels up to 220 mg/dl during fasting). Glycosilated hemoglobin concentration was determined for all the animals in the beginning of the study and again after three months of insulin therapy. In the beginning of the trial, normal values for 100% of the control group. For the not treated diabetic group high levels were found. After...

Diagnóstico e controle da neosporose em bovinos. Infoteca-e
ANDREOTTI, R.; LOCATELLI-DITTRICH, R; SOCCOL, V. T.; PAIVA, F..

Endoscopic diagnosis and removal of esophageal foreign bodies in small animais. MV&Z
Corrêa, Valéria Pires.
Endoscopy was performed in sixteen animals, 14 dogs and two cats, with esophageal foreign bodies, referred to the Surgery Department of the School of Veterinary Medicine (University of São Paulo) and to a private diagnosis center in the city of São Paulo. The location, nature, texture and shape of the foreign bodies were assessed to determine the possibility of removal, as well as condition of the esophageal mucosa. Based on the results, it was concluded that esophageal endoscopy is a complement to the radiological diagnosis of foreign bodies. Their endoscopic removal was a practical and safe procedure, sometimes avoiding the need for a surgical intervention.
