Accounting of agricultural and nonagricultural impacts of irrigation and drainage Systems: A report of research in Taiwan and Sri Lanka in 2003 AgEcon
This paper is a collaborative research between the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the Agricultural Engineering Research Centre of Taiwan. This study contributes to IWMI’s program on the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture. The research in 2003 consists of two components. First, research in Taiwan continues on estimating the positive and negative externalities of paddy-rice production. Second, research is being conducted in Sri Lanka to assess more broadly the impact of water resource development. In addition, two extensive literature reviews have been completed

Agricultural Drainage and Gulf Hypoxia: Economic Targeting of Farmland to Reduce Nitrogen Loads in a Minnesota Watershed AgEcon

Agricultural nitrogen losses are the major contributor to nitrogen loads in the Mississippi River, and consequently, to the existence of a hypoxic, or "dead", zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Focusing on two small agricultural watersheds in southwestern Minnesota, simulation results from the Agricultural Drainage And Pesticide Management (ADAPT) model were combined with a linear-optimization model to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of alternative land-use policies for reducing nitrogen losses. An Analysis of the Role of Tile-Drained Farmland Under Alternative Nitrogen Abatement Policies AgEcon

Agricultural nitrogen is a major contributor to Gulf of Mexico hypoxia, and research has shown that agricultural subsurface tile drainage is a major carrier of nitrogen from croplands to streams and rivers. This study compares the results of abating nitrogen under a retired-land minimization policy with those of a new revenue-maximizing policy, paying particular attention to the role of tile-drained land. Findings reveal the retirement-minimizing policy resulted in more tile-drained land being retired and less being fertilizer-managed than was optimal under the net-return maximizing policy. Also, it led to a greater economic burden being shouldered by tile-drained land. Under both cases, tile drainage dominated the abatement process.

The surgical treatment of breast cancer has been enhanced throughout the years in order to offer oncologically safer and more effective results with lower esthetic impact and fewer sequelae. The lymphedema of the upper limb is still an iatrogenic result of great incidence and morbidity after this treatment. Este boletim de pesquisa tem por objetivo apresentar os métodos e resultados alcançados nas atividades de atualização dos mapas de recursos hídricos do Estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, no âmbito do projeto Sistema de Informação Georreferenciada como apoio à tomada de decisão - estudo do Caso (GeoMS), executado pela Embrapa Informática Agropecuária em parceria do Instituto do Meio Ambiente do Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul (Imasul). Avaliação econômica da recuperação de solos salinos no perímetro irrigado de Vaza-Barris- Cocorobó, BA. Infoteca-e

Como parte do programa de controle da salinidade e recuperacao de solos salinos, adotado pelo Departamento Nacional de Obras Contras as Secas- DNOCS, foram instalados 106 ha de drenagem subterranea no Setor I, do Perimetro Irrigado de Vaza-Barris PIVB. No acompanhamento e supervisao da instalacao, foram levantados os custos envolvidos da drenagem e avaliados em testes de campo, o potencial de recuperacao dos solos drenados, as limitacoes e o retorno da atividade na primeira fase de recuperacao com a conducao de uma cultura de sorgo, a partir da qual projetou-se um esquema de avaliacao economica, para um periodo de dez anos. Following the dissolution of the former Soviet Union and the collapse of existing trade arrangements, the newly independent states of Central Asia were left with the task of developing their own independent market economies. The region has undergone tremendous economic and social changes including significant agricultural reform mainly targeted at privatizing large collective farms that were established during the Soviet era. These reforms include the establishment of smaller private and cooperative farms in order to improve the efficiency and equity of existing production systems. Duration-frequency relationships of heavy rainfall in Santa Catarina, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo

The purpose of this study was to adjust equations that establish relationships between rainfall events with different duration and data from weather stations in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. In this study, the relationships between different duration heavy rainfalls from 13 weather stations of Santa Catarina were analyzed. From series of maximum annual rainfalls, and using the Gumbel-Chow distribution, the maximum rainfall for durations between 5 min and 24 h were estimated considering return periods from 2 to 100 years. The data fit to the Gumbel-Chow model was verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test at 5 % significance. The objective of this work was to evaluate the water flow computer model, WATABLE, using experimental field observations on water table management plots from a site located near Hastings, FL, USA. The experimental field had scale drainage systems with provisions for subirrigation with buried microirrigation and conventional seepage irrigation systems. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) growing seasons from years 1996 and 1997 were used to simulate the hydrology of the area. Knowledge of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships of rainfall events is extremely important to determine the dimensions of surface drainage structures and soil erosion control. The purpose of this study was to obtain IDF equations of 13 rain gauge stations in the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil: Chapecó, Urussanga, Campos Novos, Florianópolis, Lages, Caçador, Itajaí, Itá, Ponte Serrada, Porto União, Videira, Laguna and São Joaquim. Hydrogen sulfide in posthemorrhagic shock mesenteric lymph drainage alleviates kidney injury in rats BJMBR

Posthemorrhagic shock mesenteric lymph (PHSML) is a key factor in multiple organ injury following hemorrhagic shock. We investigated the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in PHSML drainage in alleviating acute kidney injury (AKI) by administering D,L-propargylglycine (PPG) and sodium hydrosulfide hydrate (NaHS) to 12 specific pathogen-free male Wistar rats with PHSML drainage. A hemorrhagic shock model was established in 4 experimental groups: shock, shock+drainage, shock+drainage+PPG (45 mg/kg, 0.5 h prehemorrhage), and shock+drainage+NaHS (28 µmol/kg, 0.5 h prehemorrhage). Intéraction sol-structure dans une problématique de pêche en milieu naturel marin ArchiMer

In this article, we demonstrate the evolution law of the dynamic friction coefficient of a sea-bottom concentrated suspension on a moving solid body. The hypothesis of a Mohr-Coulomb type behaviour at the interfaces is expressed and confirmed experimentally. In order to carry out these experiments, a tribometer and a friction parameter calculation model are developed. These experiments are part of a study on the environmental impact of trawls, the gear used for fishing. They are conducted in collaboration with the Ifremer Lorient.
