Are Eco-Labels Valuable? Evidence from the Apparel Industry AgEcon
Nimon, R. Wesley; Beghin, John C..
Using U.S. apparel catalogue data, we estimate hedonic price functions to identify market valuation of environmental attributes of apparel goods. We identify a significant and robust premium for the organic fibers embodied in the apparel goods. We also find a discount for the "no-dye" label. We do not, however, find any evidence of a premium for environment-friendly dyes. We further investigate the pricing behavior of apparel suppliers for potential heterogenous pricing of the organic-fiber attribute and find no evidence of different premia across firms.

Bioremediation of dyes by fungi isolated from contaminated dye effluent sites for bio-usability BJM
Rani,Babita; Kumar,Vivek; Singh,Jagvijay; Bisht,Sandeep; Teotia,Priyanku; Sharma,Shivesh; Kela,Ritu.
Biodegradation and detoxification of dyes, Malachite green, Nigrosin and Basic fuchsin have been carried out using two fungal isolates Aspergillus niger, and Phanerochaete chrysosporium, isolated from dye effluent soil. Three methods were selected for biodegradation, viz. agar overlay and liquid media methods; stationary and shaking conditions at 25 °C. Aspergillus niger recorded maximum decolorization of the dye Basic fuchsin (81.85%) followed by Nigrosin (77.47%), Malachite green (72.77%) and dye mixture (33.08%) under shaking condition. Whereas, P. chrysosporium recorded decolorization to the maximum with the Nigrosin (90.15%) followed by Basic fuchsin (89.8%), Malachite green (83.25%) and mixture (78.4%). The selected fungal strains performed better...

Degradation of textile dyes by cyanobacteria BJM
Dellamatrice,Priscila Maria; Silva-Stenico,Maria Estela; Moraes,Luiz Alberto Beraldo de; Fiore,Marli Fátima; Monteiro,Regina Teresa Rosim.
Abstract Dyes are recalcitrant compounds that resist conventional biological treatments. The degradation of three textile dyes (Indigo, RBBR and Sulphur Black), and the dye-containing liquid effluent and solid waste from the Municipal Treatment Station, Americana, São Paulo, Brazil, by the cyanobacteria Anabaena flos-aquae UTCC64, Phormidium autumnale UTEX1580 and Synechococcus sp. PCC7942 was evaluated. The dye degradation efficiency of the cyanobacteria was compared with anaerobic and anaerobic-aerobic systems in terms of discolouration and toxicity evaluations. The discoloration was evaluated by absorption spectroscopy. Toxicity was measured using the organisms Hydra attenuata, the alga Selenastrum capricornutum and lettuce seeds. The three...

MAGELLAN PEAT (Sphagnum magallanicum) AS NATURAL ADSORBENT OF RECALCITRAN SYNTHETIC DYES R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Sepulveda-Cuevas,Luisa A; Contreras-Villacura,Elsa G; Palma-Toloza,Carolyn L.
Colour abatement is a complex problem because the synthetic origin of the dyes used in the industry. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using Magellan peat (Sphagnum magallanicum) as an adsorbent of textile dyes, determining the physical-chemical characteristics of the peat by measuring the adsorptive capacity of the dyes as well as exploring the degrading potential of the native microorganisms they contain. The results obtained indicate that the peat has a specific surface area (BET) and a volume of 144.3 m² g-1 and 60% of meso- and macropores, respectively. The basicity of the peat surface is superior to acidity and the pH in which the neutrality is reached is about 3.1. Equilibrium concentrations for the basic, acid and reactive...

Presencia de verde malaquita y leucoverde malaquita en especies bioacuáticas y productos de uso acuícola OceanDocs
Chalén, F.; Sáenz, J.; Cambisaca, M.; Franco, F..
In aquaculture are used various drugs and chemicals for veterinary use to prevent or treat diseases, control pests, help production processes and promote growth. These substences are usually incorporated in the so-called feed. Hence, the unregulated use of ingredientes in different formulations as preservatives and dyes may also cause a risk in food safety. The National Fisheries Institute monitor the waste coming from drugs, to comply with international market requirements in relation to quality standards. Residues of Malachite Green (MV) and Malachite Leucoverde (LMV) were in 82 samples of fish meal, shrimp and squid, balanced, nutritional substances in different forms granules, pastes and powders, vitamins, desinfectants, fungicides and medicated...

Sensitive and rapid titrimetric and spectrophotometric methods for the determination of stavudine in pharmaceuticals using bromate-bromide and three dyes Anais da ABC (AABC)
Basavaiah,Kanakapura; Ramakrishna,Veeraiah; Somashekar,Chikkaswamy; Kumar,Urdigere R. Anil.
Four sensitive and rapid methods for the determination of stavudine (STV) in bulk drug and in dosage forms were developed and optimized. In titrimetry, aqueous solution of STV was treated with a known excess of bromate-bromide in HCl medium followed by estimation of unreacted bromine by iodometric back titration. Spectrophotometric methods involve the addition of a measured excess of bromate-bromide in HCl medium and subsequent estimation of the residual bromine by reacting with a fixed amount of methyl orange, indigocarmine or thymol blue followed by measurement of absorbance at 520 nm (method A), 610 nm (method B) or 550 nm (method C). In all the methods, the amount of bromate reacted corresponds to the amount of STV. Calculations in titrimetry were...

Use of sweet ‘Pêra’ peel as an adsorbent in the treatment of textile effluents AGRIAMBI
Nascimento,Ketyla K. R. do; Vieira,Fernando F.; Almeida,Marcello M. de; Buriti,Josué da S.; Barros,Aldre J. M.; Oliveira,Rodrigo J. de.
ABSTRACT The disposal of industrial wastewater into aquatic bodies without proper treatment can cause severe damage to the environment and human health. The objective of this study was to perform the drying of the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) peel cultivar Pêra and evaluate the viability of its use as biosorbent in the removal of a direct dye. Drying was carried out in an oven with air circulation at temperatures of 60 and 80 ºC. The mathematical models of Page, Henderson and Pabis, Logarithmic, Midilli and Two-term exponential were fitted to the moisture data as a function of time. The material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, point of zero charge, and infrared spectroscopy. In the adsorption study, a complete 24 factorial...

Xenobiotics enhance laccase activity in alkali-tolerant γ-proteobacterium JB BJM
Singh,Gursharan; Batish,Mona; Sharma,Prince; Capalash,Neena.
Various genotoxic textile dyes, xenobiotics, substrates (10 µM) and agrochemicals (100 µg/ml) were tested for enhancement of alkalophilic laccase activity inγ-proteobacterium JB. Neutral Red, Indigo Carmine, Naphthol Base Bordears and Sulphast Ruby dyes increased the activity by 3.7, 2.7, 2.6 and 2.3 fold respectively. Xenobiotics/substrates like p-toluidine, 8-hydroxyquinoline and anthracine increased it by 3.4, 2.8 and 2.3 fold respectively. Atrazine and trycyclozole pesticides enhanced the activityby 1.95 and 1.5 fold respectively.
