Application of a bacterial extracellular polymeric substance in heavy metal adsorption in a co-contaminated aqueous system BJM
Martins,Paula Salles de Oliveira; Almeida,Narcisa Furtado de; Leite,Selma Gomes Ferreira.
The application of a bacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) in the bioremediation of heavy metals (Cd, Zn and Cu) by a microbial consortium in a hydrocarbon co-contaminated aqueous system was studied. At the low concentrations used in this work (1.00 ppm of each metal), it was not observed an inhibitory effect on the cellular growing. In the other hand, the application of the EPS lead to a lower concentration of the free heavy metals in solution, once a great part of them is adsorbed in the polymeric matrix (87.12% of Cd; 19.82% of Zn; and 37.64% of Cu), when compared to what is adsorbed or internalized by biomass (5.35% of Cd; 47.35% of Zn; and 24.93% of Cu). It was noted an increase of 24% in the consumption of ethylbenzene, among the gasoline...

Dynamique spatiale et temporelle de la production primaire de l'estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Morelle, Jérôme.
The estuaries play an important ecological role and are the site of many human activities because of their strategic position at the interface between continental and marine waters. Seine estuary is characteristic of large anthropized estuaries. Long-term management requires better knowledge of the spatial and temporal dynamics of the estuarine food webs. Phytoplankton and microphytobenthos are the main contributor of primary production (PP) in these ecosystems and are at the basis of trophic food webs. These compartments are often reduced to the chlorophyll concentration and their productivity has never been measured along the Seine estuary. The objective of this study was to estimate the PP of these compartments along the salinity gradient. In order to...

Effects of water viscosity upon ventilation and metabolism of a flatfish, the common sole Solea solea (L.) ArchiMer
Couturier, Christine; Rouault, Alice; Mckenzie, David; Galois, Robert; Robert, Serge; Joassard, Lucette; Claireaux, Guy.
The French Atlantic coast contains large highly productive intertidal mudflats that are colonised by juveniles of numerous flatfish species, including the common sole (Solea solea, L.). These ecosystems are also heavily exploited by the shellfish farming industry. Intensive bivalve culture is associated with substantial biodeposition (1-6 t-dw ha(-1) day(-1)), which directly or indirectly contributes to increase exopolysaccharide (EPS) concentrations at the interface between water column and seabed. EPS are long-chain molecules organised into colloids, which influence rheological properties of water, particularly viscosity. Increased water viscosity had consequences for ventilatory activity of juvenile flatfish, whereby the minimal pressure required to...

Effets des caractéristiques physico-chimiques et biorhéologiques de l'eau sur la physiologie, les performances adaptatives et la sélection de l'habitat chez la sole commune Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) ArchiMer
Couturier, Christine.
Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. In sole juveniles (aged class 0+) ventilatory distress was observed at concentrations above 4 mg l-1, and the intensity of the constraint decreased with fish size. Nonetheless, neither standard metabolic rate nor tolerance of hypoxia were influenced...

Lutte contre les salissures marines : approche par procédés enzymatiques. ArchiMer
Leroy, Celine.
Fouling on marine underwater surfaces causes critical and economic problems such as important material biodamages and industrial performances reduction. We chose to test antifouling potential of enzymatic commercial preparations like hydrolases (proteases, glycosidases and lipases) in order to inhibit the first fouling adhesion step: bacterial biofilm formation. An evaluation test of antifouling properties onto marine bacterial adhesion was designed using a mono-incubation of Pseudoalteromonas sp. D41 in microtiter plate and in sterile natural sea water. This test was adapted to screen agents for bacterial adhesion removal or inhibition activities and allowed to test enzymatic preparations toxicity on non adhered bacteria. Inhibition rates according to...

Production and characterization of exopolysaccharides (EPS) from biofilm forming marine bacterium BABT
Kumar,Muthusamy Ashok; Anandapandian,Kanapathi Thangavel Kasirajan; Parthiban,Karuppiah.
Marine water was used for the biofilm forming bacterial isolation. A biofilm forming device was made by using PVC pipes with sterile glass slides. Five morphologically different bacteria were isolated from the scrapping of glass slides from the device after a month period of time. The efficiency of EPS production was checked for all the isolates. Using scanning electron microscope (SEM), the morphology of microbial cells and colonies was studied. The maximum EPS was produced by the strain B3, which was analyzed and characterized by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra. B3 EPS displayed a strong absorption band of - OH at 3415.31 cm-1 and COOH at 1631.48 cm-1 showing it to be polysaccharide.

Spatio-temporal variations in intertidal mudflat erodability: Marennes-Oleron Bay, western France ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Le Hir, Pierre; Guillou, Gael; Cann, Philippe; Paillard, Michel.
A portable erosion device (ERIS) was deployed in November 2000 and May 2001 to investigate the spatio-temporal variation of fine-grained sediment erosion over a transect on the intertidal mudflats of Marennes-Oleron Bay, western France. The objective was to relate changes in bed erodability over diurnal emersion periods to bioturbation, rapid changes in sediment characteristics, and microphytobenthos biomass. Macrofaunal assemblages were dominated by the bivalve, Scrobicularia plana, on the upper mudflat, and by the gastropod, Hydrobia ulvae. on the middle mudflat. A power relationship was obtained where tau(cr) was plotted as a function of sediment density. Results from the upper part of the mudflat deviated from this relationship due to bioturbation by...

The characterization and comparison of exopolysaccharides from two benthic diatoms with different biofilm formation abilities Anais da ABC (AABC)
JIN,CUILI; YU,ZHAOWEI; PENG,SHUYA; FENG,KE; ZHANG,LIKUI; ZHOU,XIAOJIAN.
ABSTRACT Exopolysaccharide (EPS) of two benthic diatoms, Amphora sp. and Stauroneis sp., with different biofilm formation abilities were investigated. The ratio of suspension-cells/biofilm-cells was employed to indicate the diatom biofilm formation abilities. The soluble EPS from the supernatant of whole culture, tightly bound EPS from floating cells, loosely and tightly bound EPS from biofilm cells were fractionated as SL-EPS, F-TB-EPS, BF-LB-EPS and BF-TB-EPS, respectively. The analysis for productions and monosaccharide compositions indicated that EPS from two diatoms were different in terms of the productions, distributions, and monomer compositions. Amphora sp. produced more (1.5-fold) total exopolysaccharides, but less (<0.4-fold) BF-TB-EPS than...

The exopolysaccharides biosynthesis by Candida yeast depends on carbon sources Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Gientka,Iwona; Bzducha-Wróbel,Anna; Stasiak-Rózañska,Lidia; Agnieszka Bednarska,Aleksandra; Blazejak,Stanislaw.
Background: The exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by yeast exhibit physico-chemical and rheological properties, which are useful in the production of food and in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries as well. The effect was investigated of selected carbon sources on the biosynthesis of EPS by Candida famata and Candida guilliermondii strains originally isolated from kefirs. Results: The biomass yields were dependent on carbon source (sucrose, maltose, lactose, glycerol, sorbitol) and ranged from 4.13 to 7.15 g/L. The highest biomass yield was reported for C. guilliermondii after cultivation on maltose. The maximum specific productivity of EPS during cultivation on maltose was 0.505 and 0.321 for C. guilliermondii and C. famata, respectively. The...
