ENCONTRO LATINO AMERICANO DE ECOLOGIA E TAXONOMIA DE OLIGOQUETAS, 5., 2015, Curitiba..

EARTHWORM ACTIVITY IN FOREST AND SAVANNA SOILS NEAR BOA VISTA, RORAIMA, BRAZIL Acta Amazonica
GUERRA,Rafael Torquemada.
From May to December, 1992 we studied the earthworm activity, as part of the ECOFIT Program at Surrão ( 30km from Boa Vista), verifying the duration of the activity and quantifying it through the casts deposited on the soil surface. Three transects were stablished: a 100m long in the savanna, a 40m in the transitional area and 100m long in the forest. Specimens were collected monthly along the transects according to the method proposed by TSBF and the casts were collected from the squares previously placed on the transects. Two earthworm species were found in the three areas: Pontoscolex roraìmensis and Pontoscolex corethrurus. The first species depositing its casts on the soil surface. Rainy season wich usually occurs from April to August, determined the...

Soil Health Changes Over a 25-Year Chronosequence From Forest to Plantations in Rubber Tree (Hevea brasiliensis) Landscapes in Southern Côte d'Ivoire: Do Earthworms Play a Role? ArchiMer
Tondoh, Jérôme E.; Dimobe, Kangbéni; Guéi, Arnauth M.; Adahe, Léontine; Baidai, Yannick; N'Dri, Julien K.; Forkuor, Gerald.
The agro-ecological drawbacks of the spread of rubber tree plantations in Côte d'Ivoire since the 1990's are obvious even though they have not been properly investigated. They consist of biodiversity loss, land degradation and food insecurity, which have extended into the existing cocoa-led degraded areas whose rehabilitation have unfortunately not started. This situation increases not only the threat on soil health status but also undermines the capability of soils to deliver ecosystem services that are key to sustainable agricultural production. The current study took advantage of a chronosequence in rubber tree landscapes to assess soil health deterioration in general and possibly earthworm-mediated role in soil health changes. The hypothesis...

Temperature-dependent alterations in metabolic enzymes and proteins of three ecophysiologically different species of earthworms BABT
Tripathi,G; Kachhwaha,N.; Dabi,I.; Bandooni,N..
The effects of varying temperatures (12 - 44° C) on the specific activity of cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase ((cMDH), mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (mMDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of some earthworms (Metaphire posthuma, Perionyx sansibaricus and Lampito mauritii) were studied. The effects of different temperatures on supernatant and mitochondrial protein contents were also investigated. The specific activities of cMDH, mMDH and LDH of the earthworms decreased gradually as a function of increasing temperature from 12 to 44°C. Higher metabolic energy was needed to maintain the activity at low temperatures. Hence, the earthworms showed increased enzyme specific activity at low temperatures. However, the protein content increased upto 28°C....

The population of earthworms Lumbricus spp. on the plateau of La Paz, Bolivia Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Loza-Murguía,Manuel G; Acho,René; Arce,Alcides; Huaycho,Roxana; Aruhiza,Nicanor; Mamani,Sofía.
The macrofauna is an important component of ecosystems because its participation in the biodegradation of soil nutrients has beneficial effects on the food chain. During six months, from February through July, a number of worms and their biomass (g m-2) were assessed in the soil of the Estación Experimental of Kallutaca, located on the plateau of La Paz. A study area of one hectare of fallow land was delimited. The study area had been without tillage activity for approximately ten years. This area was divided into five rings. Each ring had eight sampling points. Each sampling point included a square meter of soil and had a depth of 30-35 cm. The density and biomass of earthworms recorded in this study were 13.6 ± 29.74 m-2 and 4.7315 ± 2.3544 g m-2,...

Towards an ecological index for tropical soil quality based on soil macrofauna PAB
Huerta,Esperanza; Kampichler,Christian; Geissen,Violette; Ochoa-Gaona,Susana; Jong,Ben de; Hernández-Daumás,Salvador.
The objective of this work was to construct a simple index based on the presence/absence of different groups of soil macrofauna to determine the ecological quality of soils. The index was tested with data from 20 sites in South and Central Tabasco, Mexico, and a positive relation between the model and the field observations was detected. The index showed that diverse agroforestry systems had the highest soil quality index (1.00), and monocrops without trees, such as pineapple, showed the lowest soil quality index (0.08). Further research is required to improve this model for natural systems that have very low earthworm biomass (<10 g m-2) and a high number of earthworm species (5-7), as it is in the tropical rain forest, whose soil quality index was...

Tropical terrestrial model ecosystems for evaluation of soil fauna and leaf litter quality effects on litter consumption, soil microbial biomass and plant growth PAB
Förster,Bernhard; Garcia,Marcos; Höfer,Hubert; Morgan,Edward; Römbke,Jörg.
The aim of this work was to evaluate whether terrestrial model ecosystems (TMEs) are a useful tool for the study of the effects of litter quality, soil invertebrates and mineral fertilizer on litter decomposition and plant growth under controlled conditions in the tropics. Forty-eight intact soil cores (17.5-cm diameter, 30-cm length) were taken out from an abandoned rubber plantation on Ferralsol soil (Latossolo Amarelo) in Central Amazonia, Brazil, and kept at 28ºC in the laboratory during four months. Leaf litter of either Hevea pauciflora (rubber tree), Flemingia macrophylla (a shrubby legume) or Brachiaria decumbens (a pasture grass) was put on top of each TME. Five specimens of either Pontoscolex corethrurus or Eisenia fetida (earthworms),...
