An integrated approach to delimiting species borders in the genus Chrysotoxum Meigen, 1803 (Diptera: Syrphidae), with description of two new species Naturalis
Nedeljković, Z.; Ačanski, J.; Đan, M.; Obreht-Vidaković, D.; Ricarte, A.; Vujić, A..
Integrative taxonomy tests the validity of taxa using methods additional to traditional morphology. The existence of two different morphotypes in specimens identified as Chrysotoxum vernale Loew (Diptera: Syrphidae) prompted their taxonomic study using an integrative approach that included morphology, wing and male-surstylus geometric morphometrics, genetic and ecological analyses. As a result, a new species is recognised, Chrysotoxum montanum Nedeljković & Vujić sp. nov., and C. vernale is re-defined. A lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for C. vernale to stabilize this concept. An additional species, Chrysotoxum orthostylum Vujić sp. nov., with distinctive male genitalia is also described. The three species share an antenna with the...

Analyse et modélisation des évolutions à long terme de la biodiversité phytoplanctonique dans les zones côtières sous l’effet des pressions environnementales et anthropiques ArchiMer
Hernandez Farinas, Tania.
Coastal areas are highly-dynamic systems exposed to the effect of climate variations and human impacts, influencing the community diversity. In these ecosystems, the phytoplankton constitutes the base of food webs and integrates the effects of global changes and quality variations of coastal waters. In this context, the general objective of this study was to assess the long-term changes in the diversity of phytoplankton communities in coastal waters at different dcales and levels of organisation. Firstly, the data collected by the Phytoplankton and Phycotoxin Monitoring Network from the IFREMER was examined to study the temporal variations of the assemblages within the last two decades along the French coast and to assess the relationship with the...

Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Brun, Melanie; Siano, Raffaele; Delmas, Daniel.
This deliverable is composed of two reports which propose indice of phytoplankton composition, based respectively on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods, and the results of microscopy method. Proposals based on the results of pigment and genetic diversity methods. The present work is a continuation of several studies carried out in the past (Siano and Delmas, 2013, 2015) on investigating an indicator of phytoplankton diversity using two methods complementary to optical microscopy: the genetic diversity analyzed with metabarcoding (exhaustive analysis of the diversity and relative abundance of OTUs, i.e. groups of sequences identified by their genetic resemblance) and the pigmentary diversity (analysis of the diversity and abundance of...

Ecological setup, ploidy diversity, and reproductive biology of Paspalum modestum, a promising wetland forage grass from South America Genet. Mol. Biol.
Karunarathne,Piyal; Feduzka,Cristian; Diego,Hojsgaard.
Abstract With ever-rising demand for food, forage breeding for intensification of cattle production is also taking a leap. In South America, cattle production systems are displaced to marginal areas poorly exploited with cultivated pastures yet with high potential for growing stocking rates. This places the need for using native genetic resources to breed locally adapted plant genotypes that benefits from better forage quality, yield, and lesser threat to the local biodiversity. Paspalum modestum Mez is a grass species that produces quality forage and grows in marginal areas like estuaries and floodplains, suitable for introduction in breeding programs. In this study we characterize the species' reproductive biology and ecological preferences needed...

From seascape ecology to population genomics and back. Spatial and ecological differentiation among cryptic species of the red algae Lithophyllum stictiforme/L. cabiochiae, main bioconstructors of coralligenous habitats ArchiMer
De Jode, Aurélien; David, Romain; Haguenauer, Anne; Cahill, Abigail E.; Erga, Zinovia; Guillemain, Dorian; Sartoretto, Stephane; Rocher, Caroline; Selva, Marjorie; Le Gall, Line; Féral, Jean-pierre; Chenuil, Anne.
Ecosystem engineering species alter the physical structure of their environment and can create or modify habitats, having a massive impact on local biodiversity. Coralligenous reefs are highly diverse habitats endemic to the Mediterranean Sea built by calcareous benthic organisms among which Crustose Coralline Algae are the main engineering species. We analyzed the diversity of Lithophyllum stictiforme or L. cabiochiae in coralligenous habitats combining a multiple barcode and a population genomics approach with seascape features. Population genomics allowed disentangling pure spatial effects from environmental effects. We found that these taxa form a complex of eight highly divergent cryptic species that are easily identifiable using classic barcode...

Functional differences between fish communities on artificial and natural reefs: a case study along the French Catalan coast ArchiMer
Koeck, Barbara; Tessier, Anne; Brind'Amour, Anik; Pastor, Jeremy; Bijaoui, Benjamin; Dalias, Nicolas; Astruch, Patrick; Saragoni, Gilles; Lenfant, Philippe.
In the context of growing anthropogenic disturbances that deeply alter marine coastal ecosystems, various management tools are used to protect biodiversity, such as fishing gear limitations, fishing quotas, protected areas or the creation of artificial reefs (ARs). In contrast to the other management tools, ARs require a modification of natural habitats. We used underwater visual censuses to investigate the effect of habitat modification on the structure of fish communities by comparing a natural reef (NR) to ARs with different habitat complexity. Different fish assemblage descriptors were used to assess species- and functional- and community-level aspects of the assemblages. ARs were rapidly colonized by adult fishes and presented community compositions...

Intraspecific and interspecific trait variability in tadpole meta-communities from the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest ArchiMer
Jordani, Mainara Xavier; Mouquet, Nicolas; Casatti, Lilian; Menin, Marcelo; De Cerqueira Rossa-feres, Denise; Albert, Cécile Hélène.
A better understanding of species coexistence and community dynamics may benefit from more insights on trait variability at the individual and species levels. Tadpole assemblages offer an excellent system to understand the relative influence of intraspecific and interspecific variability on community assembly, due to their high phenotypic plasticity, and the strong influence that environmental variables have on their spatial distribution and individual performance. Here, we quantified the intraspecific and interspecific components of tadpoles’ trait variability in order to investigate their relative role in shaping tadpole communities. We selected eight functional traits related to microhabitat use, foraging strategies, and swimming ability. We measured...

Occurrence of Cabassous tatouay (Cingulata, Dasypodidae) in Rio Grande do Sul and its potential distribution in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Oliveira,Stefan V. de; Corrêa,Luiz L. C.; Peters,Felipe B.; Mazim,Fábio D.; Garcias,Felipe M.; Santos,Janduhy P. dos; Kasper,Carlos B..
ABSTRACT Cabossous tatouay Desmarest, 1804 is considered a rare species in southern South America, and Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, records of the species are scarce and inaccurate. This study reports 40 localities for C. tatouay, and provides a map of the species' potential distribution using ecological niche modeling (ENM). The ENM indicated that in this region C. tatouay is associated with open grasslands, including the areas of "Pampas" and the open fields in the highlands of the Atlantic Forest. This study contributes to the information about the greater naked-tailed armadillo in southern Brazil, and provides data key to its future conservation.

Patterns of spatial distribution in macroalgal communities from tropical lotic ecosystems Rev. Bras. Bot.
Borges,Fábio R.; Necchi Júnior,Orlando.
Three sampling sites were analysed in each of the following tropical regions: 1) northwestern São Paulo State, representing a disturbed region; 2) Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul State, representing a hard water region; and 3) Ubatuba, northern costal region of São Paulo State, a well preserved tropical rainforest region. The hard water region had the highest mean values for macroalgal species richness (6.3) and diversity index (H' = 0.62). Northwest and rainforest regions had the highest percent cover values (22.5% and 17.0%, respectively). All sites in the northwest region had one or two dominant species (percent cover significantly higher than the remaining species), characterizing the niche pre-emption distribution pattern. The same pattern was found in two...
