AGROECOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EVALUATING AGRICULTURAL R&D AgEcon
Wood, Stanley; Pardey, Philip G..
In this paper we describe how biophysical data can be used, in conjunction with agroecological concepts and multimarket economic models, to systematically evaluate the effects of agricultural R&D in ways that inform research priority setting and resource-allocation decisions. Agroecological zones can be devised to help estimate the varying, site-specific responses to new agricultural technologies and to evaluate the potential for research to spill over from one agroecological zone to another. The application of agroecological zonation procedures in an international, agricultural research context is given special attention.

An economic evaluation of the osmoregulation gene technology to the Australian wheat industry AgEcon
Farquharson, Robert J.; Morgan, J.M.; Brennan, John P..
Episodes of rainfall irregularity and soil moisture deficit have focused attention on the widespread limitation of water supply on winter cereal crop production in Australia. This has motivated a number of efforts at breeding for improved drought tolerance. A recent example involves a cellular adaptation which mitigates water loss through solute accumulation (osmoregulation or osmotic adjustment). An assessment of the performance of osmoregulation yield response in the presence of climate change found that wheat cultivars with this gene are unlikely to be adversely affected by hotter and drier conditions across the wheat belt. The results of an economic evaluation of potential future innovations (wheat cultivars) from the osmoregulation gene technology are...

An Emergent Economics of Ecosystem Management AgEcon
Hearnshaw, Edward J.S.; Cullen, Ross; Hughey, Kenneth F.D..
Economics is an evolving and emerging field of study, so is the management of ecosystems. As such, this paper delineates the co-evolution of economic evaluation that reflects the various recognized ecosystem management approaches of anticipative, adaptive and capacitive ecosystem management. Each management approach is critiqued and from this theoretical analysis an emergent approach for the management of ecosystem is put forward, which accordingly suggests an alternative methodological approach for economic evaluations.

Breeding and quality analysis of rapeseed AgEcon
Chudleigh, Peter D..
This study is an ex-post, economic assessment of two projects supported by ACIAR and concerned with the breeding and quality analysis of rapeseed in Australia and China. These projects were carried out sequentially with the first one commencing on 1 July 1986. The second one was completed on 30 June 1991. The projects were essentially an exchange of knowledge and germplasm of rape (Brassica napus) between plant breeders in Australia and China. The projects resulted in the release of varieties of rape that yielded improved seed in Australia, China and other developed and developing countries. An economic evaluation of these projects was made in 1991 and the results published in Chudleigh (1991). Assumptions made in the 1991 analysis have now been updated....

Conservation Agriculture in Trouble? Estimating the Economic Impact of an Eventual Glyphosate Prohibition in Spain Planta Daninha
PARDO,G.; MARTÍNEZ,Y..
ABSTRACT: Weed control is a crucial aspect in many conservation agriculture systems given that costs and time savings from avoiding tillage are closely linked to the use of effective and environmental friendly herbicides. This has led to the widespread use of glyphosate in farms, as it is a broad-spectrum, easily degradable, low- cost herbicide. The recent debate on the safety of glyphosate and on the excessive use of chemical herbicides in food production has caused concern on farmers about the possible economic effects of a virtual ban on glyphosate. The aim of this paper is to estimate the costs associated with an eventual prohibition of glyphosate in Spanish conservation agriculture areas. The costs of different alternative weed control strategies for...

COST OF IGNORANCE- EVALUATING A LAND AND WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN AgEcon
Hill, Christine M..
This paper outlines the impacts of ignoring the costs to the community of increased rural waterlogging and salinity. It identifies the cost of no further action, and the costs and benefits of undertaking a land and water management plan. The processes of developing and evaluating the plan are explained. Difficulties in obtaining data, both for the community and the economist, are discussed. Data availability then shapes the range of costs and benefits that can be evaluated. The paper looks at the process and results of a case study of a Land and Water Management Plan for an irrigation district in central New South Wales. The case study demonstrated all the complexities of community and professional conflict, difficulties in data availability, budget and...

Ebling,PD; Ribeiro,AML; Trevizan,L; Silva,ICM da; Kessler,A de M; Rubin,LL.
Four Nutritional Programs (NP) used in the Brazilian poultry industry were tested in two broiler strains (Cobb 500 and Ross 308). NP varied in the concentrations of their main essential amino acids (AA) and were classified as Low, Regular, High and Mixed (high AA concentrations up to 21 days and regular concentrations after that). Minimum digestible Met+Cys/Lys, Thr/Lys, Arg/Lys, Ile/Lys, and Val/Lys ratios were 0.74, 0.64, 1.05, 0.65 and 0.75, respectively, in all NP, and no minimum amount of CP was fixed. There were no interactions between strain and NP for any of the evaluated responses. From 1 to 47 days of age, birds fed the Low NP presented lower average body weight and body weight gain (BWG). The high NP allowed for better feed conversion ratio...

Environmental and social values of river water: examples from the Menik Ganga, Sri Lanka. AgEcon
Dissanayake, Priyanka; Smakhtin, Vladimir U..
Many decisions on water allocation in river basins are made on economic grounds. Environmental and social benefits of water should also be considered in river basin management, and attempts should be made to value them similarly. This is not a straightforward task and very few studies have directly addressed this issue to date. In this paper, the Menik Ganga (River) in southern Sri Lanka is used as a case study to attempt and evaluate the costs and benefits of environmental water allocations, referred to as ‘environmental flows’ (EF). In this study, a broad definition of EF is used: the components of EF evaluated include the requirements of the religious festival, the requirements of the Yala National Park, the requirements of the Pilinnawa Coastal Wetland...

Evaluating Marketing Channel Options for Small-Scale Fruit and Vegetable Producers AgEcon
LeRoux, Matthew N.; Schmit, Todd M.; Roth, Monika; Streeter, Deborah H..
An investigation of the relative costs and benefits of marketing channels used by typical smallscale diversified vegetable crop producers is conducted. Using case study evidence from four small farms in Central New York, this study compares the performance of wholesale and direct marketing channels, including how the factors of risk, owner and paid labor, price, lifestyle preferences, and sales volume interact to impact optimal market channel selection. Given the highly perishable nature of the crops grown, along with the risks and potential sales volume of particular channels, a combination of different marketing channels is needed to maximize overall firm performance. Accordingly, a ranking system is developed to summarize the major firm-specific factors...

Impact of exposure to cold on layer production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Alves,FMS; Felix,GA; Almeida Paz,ICL; Nääs,IA; Souza,GM; Caldara,FR; Garcia,RG.
Infrared thermographic images were used to evaluate the effect of the exposure of layers to cold. In this trial, 540 Isa Brown® layers with an average age of 69 weeks were housed in a conventional layer house typically used in Brazil during a period of cold environmental temperatures. Environmental and heat-transference data were recorded between July 13-16, 2010. It was verified that layers under cold stress conditions lost four times more energy that the recommendations trying to maintain their body temperature. Due to their reduced feed intake capacity, hens are not capable of increasing the availability of the metabolic energy required to maintain their body temperature and egg production, consequently resulting in economic losses.
