1,3-Propanediol production from crude glycerol by Clostridium butyricum DSP1 in repeated batch Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Szymanowska-Powalowska,Daria.
Background The production of biofuels from renewable energy sources is one of the most important issues in industrial biotechnology today. The process is known to generate various by-products, for example crude glycerol, which is obtained in the making of biodiesel from rapeseed oil. Crude glycerol may be utilized in many ways, including microbial conversion to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD), a raw material for the synthesis of polyesters and polyurethanes. Results The paper presents results of a study on the synthesis of 1,3-propanediol from crude glycerol by a repeated batch method with the use of Clostridium butyricum DSP1. Three cycles of fermentation medium replacement were carried out. The final concentration of 1,3-PD was 62 g/L and the maximum...

Effet des conditions environnementales sur le développement des pathologies à Vibrio dans les élevages de crevettes en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues.
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic...

Expression of bacterial genes in transgenic tobacco: methods, applications and future prospects Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Jube,Sandro; Borthakur,Dulal.
Tobacco is the most commonly used plant for expression of transgenes from a variety of organisms, because it is easily grown and transformed, it provides abundant amounts of fresh tissue and has a well-established cell culture system. Many bacterial proteins involved in the synthesis of commercial products are currently engineered for production in tobacco. Bacterial enzymes synthesized in tobacco can enhance protection against abiotic stresses and diseases, and provide a system to test applied strategies such as phytoremediation. Examples of bacterial gene expression in tobacco include production of antigen proteins from several human bacterial pathogens as vaccines, bacterial proteins for enhancing resistance against insects, pathogens and herbicides,...

Flooding effects in seedlings of Cytharexyllum myrianthum Cham. and Genipa americana L.: responses of two neotropical lowland tree species Rev. Bras. Bot.
ANDRADE,ANTÔNIO CARLOS SILVA DE; RAMOS,FLAVIO NUNES; SOUZA,ALEXANDRE FADIGAS DE; LOUREIRO,MARTA BRUNO; BASTOS,RODRIGO.
Six-month-old seedlings of Cytharexyllum myrianthum and Genipa americana, two common tree species in different flood-prone areas in Brazil, were flooded for up to 90 days to compare their survival and growth responses under these conditions. Seedlings of both species were found to be relatively tolerant to flooding but growth responses changed according to treatment and plant species. Growth of G. americana was reduced by flooding, showing a decrease in root and leaf dry mass, root/shoot ratio and height, without showing any adaptive morphological changes. On the other hand, growth of C. myrianthum seedlings was stimulated under flooding conditions, showing an increase in root dry mass, root/shoot ratio, height, stem diameter and some morphological changes...

Genetic diversity and environmental stress in Italian populations of the cyprinodont fish Aphanius fasciatus ArchiMer
Cimmaruta, R; Scialanca, F; Luccioli, F; Nascetti, G.
Allozyme electrophoresis has been used to analyse the genetic structure of ten populations of the killifish, Aphanius fasciatus, sampled from Italian coastal brackish lagoons or salterns. The goal of the study was to compare the genetic structure of samples obtained from habitats characterised by environmental stress of different kinds, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the relationships between the genetic variation of natural populations and environmental disturbance, either natural or man-made. Therefore, the sampling scheme has been planned to provide samples from both brackish habitats, characterised by natural stress with seasonal marked fluctuations of chemical and physical parameters, and from coastal lagoons suffering from a high...

Responses of Conocarpus lancifolius to environmental stress: a case study in the semi-arid land of Kuwait Phyton
Redha,A; Suleman,P; Al-Hasan,R; Afzal,M.
Cococarpus lancifolius Engl. grows wild in Djibouti, Somalia and East Africa, and South Asia. The species was introduced into Kuwait, where it is exposed to several stresses: oil pollution, salinity, high temperature and harsh climatic conditions. These conditions are prevalent in its semi-arid environment. In this study, the impact of salinity (2, 6 and 10%), temperature (20, 30 and 40 °C), polyethylene glycol (10, 30 and 60%) and drought has been investigated on C. lancifolius. Proline (Pro) accumulation (5.5 ± 0.03 µg/g dry weight; p=0.05-0.005), protein (16.47 ± 0.052 mg/g; p=0.001), free amino acids (10.92 ± 0.082 mg/g; p=0.006) and lipids (116.05 ± 2.17 µg/g; p=0.05) were measured in plants irrigated with 60% polyethylene glycol (PEG) for 6 days....

Review and perspectives of physiological mechanisms underlying genetically-based resistance of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to summer mortality ArchiMer
Samain, Jean-francois.
French oyster farming has been subject to severe mortalities during the summer months. Results from the research program "Morest", which ran from 2000 to 2006 and examined the possible causes of these mortalities, led to the construction of a model to explain the interaction between environmental factors, oyster physiology and different opportunistic pathogens underlying oyster summer mortality. Temperature, food, reproduction and stress were the main factors required for oyster mortality. Genetically-based resistance ("R" oysters) or susceptibility ("S" oysters) to summer mortality was revealed by divergent selection. Building on these results, a literature search was made in 2007 on the molecular origin of genetic resistance to such a complex mortality...

Seed inoculation with Azospirilum brasiliense in corn plants submitted to water limitation Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Coelho, Antônio Eduardo; Tochetto, Cláudia; Turek, Thais Lemos; Michellon, Luiz Henrique; Fioreze, Samuel Luiz.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the seed inoculation with Azospirilum brasilense in corn plants under limitation of the water supply. Two assays were carried out in greenhouse conditions, using low nitrogen substrate pots. At first one, corn seeds were inoculated or not with A. brasilense and treated or not with a biostimulant (IBA+GA+KT). At the second experiment, two corn genotypes were inoculated or not with A. brasilense. In both assays, plants were submitted to limited condition of water supply at initial vegetative growth. During this period gas exchange parameters were determined at the plants. After stress period, dry matter and nitrogen content were determined in roots and above ground parts of the plants. In addition, substrate...

Seedling growth of irrigated rice as a function of seed treatment with gibberellic acid Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Guadagnin, Cristina Mayumi Ide; Schuch, Luis Osmar Braga; Venske, Eduardo; Zimmer, Paulo Dejalma; Aumonde, Tiago Zanatta.
This study aimed to evaluate the early growth stages of irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings from cultivars SCS-112, BRS-7 Taim, BR IRGA 410 and IRGA 417, under three different temperatures, i.e. 15, 20 and 25 °C, as a result of seed imbibition in a gibberellic acid (GA3) solution at concentrations of  zero, 150, 300, 450, 600 and 750 mg L-1. The lengths of the shoot and the primary root of seedlings were recorded at three, seven and 21 days from sowings on germination paper. Interactions between the main factors were observed for all the response variables. Rice cultivars have differential sensitivity to variation in the concentration of gibberellic acid on seed treatment according to the temperature and the time of evaluation. Cultivar BRS-7 Taim...

Sensitivity and Variability of Two Plant Water Stress Indicators: Exploring Criteria for Choosing a plant Monitoring Method for Avocado Irrigation Management Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Celedón,José M; Gil,Pilar M; Ferreyra,Raul; Maldonado,Patricio; Barrera,Cristián.
Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a fruit-tree species highly susceptible to water deficit, which makes irrigation management a difficult task for growers. When irrigation is inadequate, trees suffer growth reduction, fruit losses, and roots damage. This study addressed the question of how to assess water stress in avocado trees and the considerations to choose an indicator to measure the plant water stress. In this work the sensitivity and variability of two water stress indicators in response to water deficit were analyzed: stem water potential (SWP) and maximum daily trunk shrinkage (MDTS). During a period of high water demand, avocado trees planted in a clay loam soil were subjected to water stress by withholding irrigation and compared to control...

Tohu-va-Vohu of the quasi-stochastic phytoplankton in the Sea of the Galilee IBSS Repository
Kamenir, Y..
The stability analysis of natural communities and ecosystems requires quantitative means capable of evaluating the structural variability of the aquatic community or assemblage taken as a whole. Size spectrum (SS) provides such assessment and is most often applied to the size distribution of particles or organisms of the given community. Another old, but rarely used, special case of SS describes the size-frequency distribution of taxonomic units encompassed by an assemblage, and is called here 'taxonomic size spectrum' (TSS). The phytoplankton assemblage of the sea of the Galilee (Lake Kinneret), Israel, was used to compare several years (out of the 30-year monitoring period) characterized with the most pronounced abnormalities in many biotic and abiotic...
