Kage,Devendra N; Malashetty,Vijaykumar B; Seetharam,Y. N; Suresh,P; Patil,Saraswati B.
Ethanol extract of whole plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina was evaluated for antiovulatory activity in adult rats. The ethanol extract at the doses 200 and 400mg/kg body weight (orally) affected the normal estrous cycle showing a significant increase in estrus and metestrus phases and decrease in diestras and proestrus phases. The extract also significantly reduced the number of healthy follicles (Class I-Class VI) and corpora lutea and increased the number of regressing follicles (Stage IA, Stage IB, Stage IIA, and Stage IIB). The protein and glycogen content in the ovaries were significantly reduced in treated rats. The cholesterol level was significantly increased, whereas, the enzyme activities like 3b-HSD and 17b-HSD were...

FONSECA, J. F. da; CASTRO, A. C. R.; ARASHIRO, E. K. N.; OLIVEIRA, M. E. F.; ZAMBRINI, F. N.; ESTEVES, L. V.; BRANDÃO, F. Z.; SOUZA-FABJAN, J. M. G..
Abstract: The effect of hCG administration on accessory corpus luteum (ACL) formation, CL area, and plasma progesterone (P4) concentration (ng/mL) seven days after breeding was studied in nulliparous Santa Inês sheep. Intravaginal 60 mg MAP sponges were inserted into ewes for six days and 300 IU eCG i.m. and 30 ?g d-cloprostenol latero-vulvar were administered 24 h before sponge removal. Ewes were naturally bred and, seven days after first mating (Day 0; D0), were treated with either 250 IU hCG (hCG group; n = 7) or 1 mL saline solution (control group; n = 7). Blood was collected to determine plasma P4 concentrations and sonograms were performed on Days 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, and 22. Number of CL on D7 was similar (P > 0.05) between hCG (1.3 ± 0.5) and...

Follicular dynamics in Serrana goats IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Simão, J.; Almeida, José Carlos; Valentim, Ramiro; Azevedo, Jorge; Fontes, Paulo; Mascarenhas, R..
Twenty-two Serrana goats were studied through two successive estrous cycles in order to characterize their follicular dynamics during the breeding season. The ovaries of the goats were scanned daily by realtime ultrasonography and all follicles ≥3mm were measured and classified. The data were classified by the number of follicular waves per goat to test the hypothesis that temporal and morphological differences between the last follicular wave of an ovary, irrespective of ovulation, will affect the selection of the next ovulatory wave. The mean interovulatory interval was 20.7±1.0 days (mean±S.D.). Three to five waves per estrous cycle were observed and 61.3% (19/31) of cycles had fourwaves. In estrous cycles with fourwaves, the day of onset of the first,...

The current paper characterizes the changes in morphology and vascularization of the corpus luteum of collared peccaries during the estrous cycle and correlates progesterone synthesis (P4). Twenty females were subjected to a treatment for estrus synchronization; an ear implant containing 1.5 mg of norgestomet was implanted on D0, whereas on D9 the peccaries received an IM injection of eCG 200UI and 50g of PGF2a. The animals were divided into four groups (G1, G2, G3 and G4) and euthanized on postovulation days 3, 12, 18 and 22. The ovaries were collected and the corpora lutea were measured and processed for histological and vascular density (Dv). Blood was collected for dosage of P4 serum. The morphology of the ovaries, the corpora lutea and P4 varied...

Reproduction and Trypanosoma congolense in Nigerian West African Dwarf ewes:I. Effects on the estrous cycle OAK
Abubakar, Y.U.; Oyedipe, E.O.; Eduvie, L.O.; Ogwu, D.O.; Adeyeye, A.A..
Ten cycling Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) ewes were used to determine the effect of Trypanosoma congolense infection on the estrous cycle. The estrus of ewes were synchronized using intravaginal progesterone sponges and divided into 2 groups (A and B) of 5 ewes each after 54 days (3 cycles). The ewes in group A were inoculated with blood containing approximately 5×105 trypanosomes per ml of blood while ewes in group B served as the uninfected control. All the ewes were monitored from infection till the end of the study (56 days). Ewes in the infected group had silent estrus with clinical trypanosomosis that was characterized by undulating parasitemia, intermittent pyrexia, anemia and weight loss. There was no statistical (p > 0.05) difference...

The use of human chorionic gonadotropin seven days after synchronized estrus for the increase of luteal tissue in Morada Nova ewes. Repositório Alice
VERGANI, G. B.; TREVIZAN, J. T.; PEREIRA, V. S. do A.; FONSECA, J. F. da; GARCIA, A. R.; ESTEVES, S. N.; OLIVEIRA, M. E. F..
The study was performed to evaluate whether the use of hCG 7 days after synchronized oestrus in Morada Nova ewes would increase the number and size of corpora lutea. In conclusion, 300 IU of hCG injected 7 days after synchronized oestrus is effective to increase the number of corpora lutea and in the size of luteal tissue. Despite indications of a favourable effect on luteal dynamics, the effects on progesterone production and conception rate need to be examined.
