Economic optimization of the number of recipients in bovine embryo transfer programs Scientia Agricola
Beltrame,Renato Travassos; Barioni,Luis Gustavo; Maestri,Breno Dala; Quirino,Celia Raquel.
Purchase and maintenance of recipient females account for a large proportion of the costs and determine the number of calves that can be produced in an embryo transfer program. However, the large variability of embryo production by the donors and the need to purchase and synchronize the recipients before knowing the number of embryos collected make it difficult for the decision maker to identify the ideal number of recipient females to allocate. An ex-ante evaluation to determine the optimal number of recipient females was carried out through a sensitivity analysis for the ratio between the number of recipients and donors in a simulation model. The variability for the number of embryos collected was accounted for by applying the Monte Carlo simulation...

Estrus behavior in Guzera (Bos taurus indicus) breed cows Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Alves,Nadja Gomes; Pires,Maria de Fátima Ávila; Silva Filho,José Monteiro da; Saturnino,Helton Mattana; Sá,Wanderlei Ferreira de; Torres,Ciro Alexandre Alves.
The estrus behavior was evaluated during an induced and natural subsequent estrus in twelve Guzera breed cows, in the winter and summer seasons in two consecutive years. The proportion of cows that responded to estrus synchronization was 84.8%. The effect of the interaction season x year of experiment on estrous cycle length was observed. Pro-estrus was longer in the summer (57.69±4.72h) and in the natural estrus (74.23±4.41h) than in the winter (38.95±4.02h) and in the induced estrus (22.40±4.36h). Estrus length was similar in the winter (11.48±0.70h) and in the summer seasons (13.40±0.82h) as well as among cows with induced (12.47±0.75h) and natural estrus (12.41±0.76h). The number of mounts accepted during estrus and the number of mounts accepted/ hour...

Estrus presentation and distribution in ewes treated with intravaginal sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) in combination with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
SIMONETTI,Laura; RAMOS,Guillermo; GARDÓN,Juan Carlos.
The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine estrus presentation and distribution following a conventional method of estrus synchronization (progestagen-PMSG treatment) in an ewe herd and 2) to analyze estrus presentation and distribution in adult ewes and ewe lambs. During spring a total of 300 cyclic Merino ewes, including 231 adult ewes and 69 ewe lambs were treated with intravaginal sponges impregnated with 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP). After 14 days sponges were removed and 375 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) were administered i.m. Estrus detection was performed with vasectomized rams. Ewes were inspected for the presence of marks at 4-hours intervals. Sponge losses, estrus synchronization and distribution were analyzed for...

Reproductive parameters of dairy goats submitted to estrus synchronization with prostaglandin F2α associated or not to hCG at estrous onset Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Esteves,L.V.; Brandão,F.Z.; Cruz,R.C.; Souza,J.M.G.; Oba,E.; Facó,O.; Fonseca,J.F..
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of two doses of PGF associated or not to hCG on the associated reproductive parameters in dairy goats. A total of 29 goats received two doses of 30µg d-cloprostenol latero-vulvar at a 10 day intervals (Day 1 and Day 10). The does were allocated according to body weight and body condition score into two treatments, to receive hCG (250IU) or saline at estrus onset. After the second dose of PGF, estrus was monitored and ultrasound exams were performed twice daily. All does were inseminated 16h after estrus onset. Blood collection was performed every day for progesterone assay. The use of hCG at estrus onset did not affect any studied parameter and therefore the data were pooled. Estrous response rate...

Residual levels on medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) impregnated sponges after estrus synchronization treatment in cyclic ewes Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
SIMONETTI,Laura; GARDÓN,Juan Carlos; RAMOS,Guillermo.
A pool of polyurethane sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) was prepared. Real level of progestagen on sponges was checked prior to sponge treatment insertion. During spring a total of 126 cyclic Merino ewes were intravaginally treated with MAP-impregnated pessaries for the synchronization of estrus. After 14 days treatment, sponges were removed. Estrus detection was performed with vasectomized rams. Ewes were inspected for the presence of marks twice a day. Ewes in estrus were artificially inseminated with fresh diluted semen containing a dose of 300x10(6) total sperm. Artificial insemination was performed 12 hours after estrus presentation. Residual levels of MAP (RMAP) on removed sponges were measured by spectrophotometry at 241 nM...
