3D modelling in the Sado estuary using a new generic vertical discretization approach ArchiMer

Sado estuary (Portugal) is a mesotidal well-mixed estuary. The flow however, displays strong three-dimensional features associated with bathymetry variations. The flow is simulated using a three-dimensional primitive equation model based on the finite-volume method and incorporating a new concept for the vertical discretization. The innovative features of the model are analysed and the advantages of the finite-volume method to implement the generic vertical discretization are put into evidence. The model was validated using water level, velocity and salinity measurements in several stations along the estuary. A fully-coupled biological-physical-chemical model of a coastal ecosystem was constructed to examine the impact of suspended mussel culture on phytoplankton biomass in Tracadie Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Due to the extent of mussel culture there, we hypothesised that shellfish filtration would control the concentration and distribution of phytoplankton and other suspended particles in the bay. Circulation was delineated with a tidally-driven 2D numerical model and used to drive an ecosystem model with a focus on pelagic components including phytoplankton production, nutrients, detritus, and mussels. The specific composition and abundance variation of the ciliate community from a wastewater discharge zone in the Bahía Blanca estuary, Argentina, were studied all throughout a year, from June 1995 to May 1996. The polluted area exhibited high values of particulate organic matter and nutrients, particularly phosphates. Aloricate ciliates were represented by 15 species belonging to the genera Strombidium Claparède & Lachmann, 1859; Strombidinopsis Kent, 1881; Cyrtostrombidium Lynn & Gilron, 1993; Strobilidium Schewiakoff, 1983; Lohmmanniella Leegaard, 1915 and Tontonia Fauré-Fremiet, 1914. Alteraciones físico-químicas de la columna de agua, generadas por el uso del Boliche (Método de Pesca Artesanal) en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs

Con el propósito de evaluar los impactos generados por el uso de un método de pesca artesanal denominado "boliche" en la laguna costera tropical Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, se cuantificaron diferentes aspectos; uno de los cuales fue orientado a analizar algunas alteraciones físico-químicas de la columna de agua, producidas durante la maniobra de pesca. Se determinó la concentración de oxígeno disuelto, la transparencia del agua y la concentración y composición del seston, antes y después de 70 lances de boliche. Los resultados indican que la maniobra de pesca genera algunos cambios momentáneos de poca repercusión en el ecosistema, tales como resuspensión de partículas principalmente inorgánicas, aumento de la concentración de seston y en consecuencia...

Análisis de clasificación de series temporales: el caso de la salinidad en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta OceanDocs

Se realizó una clasificación numérica de 21 estaciones de monitoreo del sistema laguno -estuarino comprendido por la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta y el Complejo Pajarales, de acuerdo a su similaridad en el comportamiento de la salinidad del agua. Se utilizó información quincenal comprendida entre enero de 1987 y octubre de 1991. Debido a la estructura de autocorrelación de los datos fue necesario emplear los modelos ARIMA de series de tiempo en primer lugar, y posteriormente aplicar una técnica de clasificación normal con los coeficientes de la representación infinita AR calculados para cada estación. Los resultados del análisis fueron coherentes con las hipótesis planteadas acerca de la distribución de la variable en el sistema.

Análisis de residuos de organoclorados en los sedimentos de zonas de manglar en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta y la Bahía de Chengue, Caribe colombiano OceanDocs

En los sedimentos superficiales aledaños al manglar, de cuatro estaciones dentro de la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta y una estación en la Bahía de Chengue, se analizaron las concentraciones de seis residuos de plaguicidas organoclorados (lindano, heptacloro, aldrin, pp'DDE, pp'DDD y pp'DDT), mediante la técnica de cromatografía gas-líquido. Se realizaron muestreos trimestrales entre marzo y diciembre de 1993, tratando de abarcar las principales épocas climáticas de la región (seca, lluviosa menor, seca menor y lluviosa mayor). Cet article présente les résultats d'une étude comparative de trois séries de prélèvements dans la zone proche du canal de Bassam avant, 6 mois et 20 mois après son ouverture en septembre 1987. Les effets constatés sont la diminution de l'abondance et la modification de la composition de la macrofaune benthique. Ces effets semblent de longue durée, sans reprise en ce qui concerne l'espèce la plus abondante, Corbula trigona. Les changements observés dans la structure des peuplements sont dus essentiellement à l'augmentation de la salinité, et à un degré moindre, aux modifications de la nature du sédiment.

Estuaries serve as nursery grounds for many marine fish species. However increasing human activities within estuaries and surrounding areas lead to significant habitat loss for the juveniles and decrease the quality of the remaining habitats. This study is based on the data of 470 beam trawls from surveys that were conducted in 13 French estuaries for the purpose of the European Water Framework Directive. Mytilopsis sallei es una especie que se encuentra ampliamente distribuida sobre sustratos duros en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, siendo particularmente abundante sobre bancos de ostra de mangle (Crassostrea rhizophorae), donde alcanza densidades de hasta 5000 indiv/m2. Aunque posee una amplia tolerancia a variaciones en la salinidad y temperatura, prefiere aquellos lugares donde la afluencia de aguas dulces es constante. Puede además tolerar aguas turbias con un alto contenido de sedimentos, como en la desembocadura de los ríos. Traditional fishing using beach seines was studied over a period of one year at the mouth of the Onilahy river. The catches/efforts were recorded on a daily basis, biological sampling and the measurement of hydrological parameters being carried out twice a month. The moderate variations of salinity and temperature (14 < salinity < 35; 25 degrees C < temperature < 30 degrees C) which were observed in the estuary can be explained by the semiarid climate of the area. De ambos lados de la carretera que pasa por la Isla de Salamanca se tomaron muestras de suelo. El contenido de cloruro, nitrógeno y carbono fue mayor en las muestras del lado de la Ciénaga que en las del lado del mar. Con relación a la cantidad de carbono y microorganismos, la producción de CO2 y ammonificación fueron mayores en las muestras del lado del mar. La cantidad de microorganismos parece depender directamente de la cantidad de cloruro en la muestra respectiva.

Four seasonal compaigns providing a sampling of 15 stations each followed during half a tide cycle, i.e. 120 water samples permit the definition of the main hydrobiological features of Marennes-Oleron Bay: salinity and turbidity, phytoplanktonic biomasses, ATP concentrations. The authors suggest that a new way of adapted sampling to their objectives, will work out in the future by sampling during tidal cycles but as frequently as possible.

The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Diagnosing causal factors of change at the ecosystem level is challenging because multiple drivers often interact at various spatial and temporal scales. We employ an integrated natural and social science approach to assess potential mechanisms leading to the collapse of an estuarine social-ecological system, and recommend future paths to increased system resilience. Our case study is the collapse of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) fishery in Apalachicola Bay, Florida, USA, and the associated impacts on local resource dependent communities. The presence and geochemical behaviour of herbicides were investigated in estuarine and marine waters of the French coasts (Seine, Charente, Gironde estuaries and Rhône delta). These organic contaminants were quantified by capillary Gas Chromatography (GC) using Nitrogen-Phosphorus Detecter and identified by GCIMS (Mass Spectrometry). A liquid-solid extraction method using XAD-2 resins was developed,  allowing the analysis of both chloro-triazines and their degradation products in the nanogram per litre (ng.l-1) detection range. The ichthyofauna composition of the Baía da Ribeira was analyzed between December 1998 and November2001. The instruments used were an otter-trawl net, beach seines, cast net and visual census. It was registered two classes, composed by 16 orders, 59 families and 148 species. The high wealth of the region is due to the great diversity of environments and its location at the north limit of Argentine an Zoogeographic Province. The instruments diversification, the samples regions and the long sampling period were the responsables to the great numbers of collected species in comparison to some others studies at the same area.

Composición y variación estacional del fitoplancton, zooplancton y microbentos en el estuario interior del Golfo de Guayaquil, durante el año 2003 OceanDocs

El presente trabajo comprende el estudio de la distribution cualitativa y cuantitativa del fitoplancton en el Golfo de Guayaquil, durante dos épocas: Húmeda y seca. El propósito del presente trabajo con respecto al zooplankton está orientado a conocer los cambios en la composición, abundancia y diversidad del zooplancton y en particular el Phyllum Chaetognatha con el objetivo de relacionar la distribución de las especies de Quetognatos con los parámetros físicos. En lo relacionado al estudio del microbentos, se pretende estudiar la composición específica y la abundancia relativa de las especies de la microflora béntica y de la microfauna bentónica y su relación con factores ambientales.
