Comparison of the Cranial Capacity and Brain Weight of Arak (Central Iran) with other Subgroups of Iranian Population International Journal of Morphology
Bayat,Parvin Dokht; Ghanbari,Ali.
Newborn's body dimensions such as brain weight and cranial capacity can be basis for all changes in anthropometric indices and later problems. This study is undertaken on 978 term-born normal and native newborns in Thaleghany Hospital, Arak, Iran. The measurements of the heads were done according classic cephalometry. The cranial capacity and brain weight of males and female statistically evaluated by using c²- and t test and significance was set up at p<0.05. Means and SD of the cranial capacity were 606.2± 26 and 440.82 ± 28 for males and females. Means and SD of the brain weight were 627.41±30 for males and 456.24±32 for females. The data showed that cranial capacity and brain weight of males were greater for males than that for females. This data in...

Ethnic Diversity and Ethnic Strife: An Interdisciplinary Perspective AgEcon
Kanbur, Ravi; Rajaram, Prem Kumar; Varshney, Ashutosh.
The objective of this paper is to present an overview of ethnicity, ethnic strife and its consequences, as seen from the perspective of the disciplines of economics, political science, social anthropology and sociology. What exactly is ethnicity--how is it to be defined, characterized and measured? What exactly are the causal links from ethnicity so defined to its presumed consequences, including tension and violence? What are the feedback loops from the consequences of ethnic divisions back to these divisions themselves? How can policy, if at all, mitigate ethnic divisions and ethnic conflict? Finally, what role does interdisciplinarity have in helping to understand ethnicity and ethnic strife, and how can interdisciplinary collaboration be enhanced?...

Ethnicity and glutathione S-transferase (GSTM1/GSTT1) polymorphisms in a Brazilian population BJMBR
Gattás,G.J.F.; Kato,M.; Soares-Vieira,J.A.; Siraque,M.S.; Kohler,P.; Gomes,L.; Rego,M.A.V.; Bydlowski,S.P..
The distribution of polymorphisms related to glutathione S-transferases (GST) has been described in different populations, mainly for white individuals. We evaluated the distribution of GST mu (GSTM1) and theta (GSTT1) genotypes in 594 individuals, by multiplex PCR-based methods, using amplification of the exon 7 of CYP1A1 gene as an internal control. In São Paulo, 233 whites, 87 mulattos, and 137 blacks, all healthy blood-donor volunteers, were tested. In Bahia, where black and mulatto populations are more numerous, 137 subjects were evaluated. The frequency of the GSTM1 null genotype was significantly higher among whites (55.4%) than among mulattos (41.4%; P = 0.03) and blacks (32.8%; P < 0.0001) from São Paulo, or Bahian subjects in general (35.7%; P...

Ethnicity as a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea: comparison of Japanese descendants and white males in São Paulo, Brazil BJMBR
Genta,P.R.; Marcondes,B.F.; Danzi,N.J.; Lorenzi-Filho,G..
Some studies showed that Asians with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are thinner than Caucasians. Because obesity is a major risk factor for OSA, it was concluded that Asians are predisposed to OSA. However, body fat composition varies for a same body mass index (BMI) according to ethnicity. We firstly compared anthropometric characteristics, symptoms and associated disorders in all consecutive male Japanese descendants and white males with OSA referred for polysomnography. In a second analysis, all Japanese descendants were compared to a subgroup of white males, matched for apnea/hypopnea index and age. In the first analysis, age, symptoms, OSA severity and co-morbidities were similar among Japanese descendants (N = 54) and white patients (N = 466)....

_______________ WATER, ETHNICITY AND...

The demand for health: differences between the native Dutch and immigrants in the Netherlands AgEcon
Cornelisse-Vermaat, Judith R.; Maassen van den Brink, Henriette.
This paper estimates the demand for health by using a health capital model for different population groups (native Dutch, Surinamese/Antillean, Moroccan, and Turkish) in the Netherlands. Also the effect of overweight on health utility is investigated. We found a decrease in the demand for health for age, overweight, and smoking, we found an increase in the demand for health for level of education and marital status. The analyses show a strong effect of gender. Being female in all groups is negatively related to health utility. Turkish and Moroccan ethnicity is negatively related to health status.

The effects of food habits and socioeconomic status on overweight. Differences between the native Dutch and immigrants in the Netherlands AgEcon
Cornelisse-Vermaat, Judith R.; Maassen van den Brink, Henriette.
Overweight is a worldwide growing epidemic. The Netherlands is among the countries with the highest prevalence for overweight, together with the USA, UK, and Germany. This paper investigates differences in overweight between native Dutch and three immigrant groups in the Netherlands, and the effects of food habits and socioeconomic status on overweight. The results show that all immigrant groups have a higher prevalence for overweight than the Dutch, apart from Moroccans. Males are overweight more frequently than females. Takeaway food, eating out, and fresh vegetables decrease BMI, while convenience food, ready-to-eat meals, and delivery food (in some cases) increase BMI. In all groups, BMI increases with age. For Surinamese/Antilleans and Turks BMI...

The role of gender and ethnicity in household decision-making: Evidence from rural Nepal AgEcon
Devkota, Durga; Rauniyar, Ganesh P.; Parker, W.J..
Gender disparity in household decision-making is a common phenomenon in developing countries. It is influenced by ethnicity, culture and geographical location. Household decision-making processes were examined in rural Nepal with a primary focus on gender roles in the context of three distinct ethnic communities (Brahmin/Chhetri, Gurung and Tharu) in the Chitwan district. A combination of participatory rural appraisal (n=6), gender analysis (n=6), key informant interviews (n=14) and a household socio-economic survey (n=123) were used to collect data. At the household level men and women were interviewed separately. The involvement of women in economic activities was quite high but differed substantially between the ethnic groups and by type of household...

The role of K121Q ENPP1 polymorphism in diabetes mellitus and its complications BJMBR
Leitão,C.B.; Nabinger,G.B.; Krahe,A.L.; Bolson,P.B.; Gerchman,F.; Friedman,R.; Gross,J.L.; Canani,L.H..
The aim of the present study was to analyze the frequency of K121Q polymorphism in the ENPP1 gene of Brazilian subjects according to ethnic origin and to determine its possible association with diabetes mellitus (DM) and/or diabetic complications. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1027 type 2 DM patients and 240 anonymous blood donors (BD). Ethnicity was classified based on self-report of European and African descent. The Q allele frequency was increased in African descendant type 2 DM patients (KK = 25.9%, KQ = 48.2%, and QQ = 25.9%) and BD (KK = 22.0%, KQ = 53.8%, and QQ = 24.2%) compared to European descendant type 2 DM patients (KK = 62.7%, KQ = 33.3%, and QQ = 4.1%) and BD (KK = 61.0%, KQ = 35.6%, and QQ = 3.4%). However, there was no...

Vascular complications of black patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Southern Brazil BJMBR
Gerchman,F.; Zanatta,C.M.; Burttet,L.M.; Picon,P.X.; Lisboa,H.R.K.; Silveiro,S.P.; Gross,J.L.; Canani,L.H..
Ethnicity has been shown to be associated with micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetes in European and North American populations. We analyzed the contribution of ethnicity to the prevalence of micro- and macrovascular complications in Brazilian subjects with type 2 diabetes attending the national public health system. Data from 1810 subjects with type 2 diabetes (1512 whites and 298 blacks) were analyzed cross-sectionally. The rates of ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, distal sensory neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy were assessed according to self-reported ethnicity using multiple logistic regression models. Compared to whites, black subjects [odds ratio = 1.72 (95%CI = 1.14-2.6)] were more likely to have ischemic...
