Biotic and abiotic stresses can alter the hormone balance and trigger the activation of pathways involved in the cotton stress responses, resulting in the abscission of squares, flowers and young bolls and consequent reductions in the seed cotton yield and fiber yield. As part of the mechanism that primarily regulates the protective response of plants against stresses, ethylene is considered a key hormone involved in this response, and increased ethylene synthesis has been observed when plants are subjected to stress. Thus, the development of strategies aimed to mitigate their negative effects can reduce the shed rate of reproductive structures and positively impact cotton productivity. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Affecting cucurbit hormonal status by a ZYMV transient expression vector National Institute of Agronomic Research

Squash and cucumber plants were infected with ZYMV strains engineered to over-express enzymes involved in ethylene and gibberellin biosynthesis. Presence of the inserted ACS gene within the viral RNA was transient and the insert was deleted after 20-40 days. Ethylene over-expressing plants produced very high ethylene levels and were severely stunted. Monoecious cucumbers produced earlier, consecutive female flowers. Gibberellin over-expression was deduced from the observed phenotypic change, plants were taller and flowered earlier.

The aim of this review is to critically analyze the role of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in modulating plant growth and development. In recent years, basic studies on ethylene regulation opened new vistas for applied research in the area of micro-propagation, somatic embryogenesis, in vitro flowering, growth promotion, fruit ripening, and sex expression. Silver nitrate has proved to be a very potent inhibitor of ethylene action and is widely used in plant tissue culture. Three degrees of red mite infestation (Oligonychus ilicis McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) were evaluated with regard to leaf anatomy, photosynthetic gas exchange and leaf ethylene production, in a commercial crop of approximately 12-year-old trees of Coffea arabica 'Catuaí Vermelho'. As a complementary study, foliar anatomy was also evaluated in a recuperated crop of C. arabica 'Mundo Novo' that had presented a high degree of red mite infestation during the dry period of the prior growing season. Costly investments in storage and transport of onion bulbs makes it increasingly important to identify cultivars with the best chance of long-term storage. This paper discusses our own and other researchers' results and laboratory procedures on onion's pungency, soluble solids, dry matter, respiration rate, carbohydrates and catabolism-related enzymes under different storage conditions. The variability in parameters such as carbohydrate composition, pungency, soluble solids and soluble uronic acid concentration in water is growth dependent, and defines the quality of onion bulbs at harvest time. Management practices that maintain carbohydrate reserves in tangerines are necessary in order to ensure good yields. This experiment was carried out with the object of evaluating the levels of carbohydrates in the leaves, and consistency in the production of the Ponkan tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco) when subjected to chemical thinning with five concentrations of Ethephon for three consecutive years. The Ponkan tangerine evaluated had been grafted onto Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck), cultivated with a spacing of 6.0 x 3.0 m and were 12 years old. Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota) is a climacteric fruit that ripens shortly after harvest. Studies on its conservation during storage have been mainly restricted to using low temperatures and modified atmospheres. In this study we investigated the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the physiological and biochemical changes that sapodilla cell wall undergoes during ripening and evaluated its potential to preserve sapodilla fruits at postharvest. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) fruit produce low amounts of ethylene during ripening and is therefore considered as a non-climacteric fruit. Here we examined the involvement of ethylene in early stages of fruit development. Ethylene production was high in ovary and young fruitlets but decreased at later stages of development. Increased fruit set was observed in plants treated with ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor. Cloning and characterisation of a CTR1-like gene in Cucurbita pepo National Institute of Agronomic Research

A homologue of CTR1, one of the key genes in the regulation of ethylene response pathway of Arabidopsis, has been cloned and characterised in Cucurbita pepo. The Cup-CTR1 gene is predicted to encode for a protein containing the structural features of Map kinase kinase kinases (MAPKKKs) and shares 58-85 % identity with CTR1-like proteins in Arabidopsis and other plant species. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Cup-CTR1 is more related to Arabidopsis CTR1 and related proteins in tomato, rose and Delphinium, than to other plant MAPKKKs. Color change and quality response of ‘lane late’ orange submitted to degreening process REA

This study aimed at evaluating the effects of ethylene on peel color and compositional changes in ‘Lane late’ orange stored under refrigerated and ambient conditions. Physiologically mature, but green-peeled, oranges were exposed to ethylene gas under room temperature and high relative humidity for 24 hours. Storage chamber was ventilated with fresh air after 12 hours to mitigate consequences derived from fruit respiration. Differential esterase activity in aerial and root tissues from 6as DHR wheat lines after phytohormonal treatments JBAG

Activity of aerial and root esterases in wheat DHR lines of chromosome 6AS was tested. Different patterns were found after applying phytohormone treatments that mimic stress conditions. Ethylene treated plants showed the lowest aerial and root weights; also, the smallest foliar area, in conjunction with absence of esterase activity in more than half of the lines, was observed. Additional studies will contribute to clarify the key role of ET in the expression of defense related genes.

Effect of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, and ethrel on gerbera in vitro culture Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii, Bolus) plantlets in 125 ml flask received 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 ppm Ethrel and 0.01,0.1,1 mM 1- aminocyclopropane-1- carboxylic acid (ACC) to study the effect of ethylene and ethylene biosynthesis through cultured in vitro. The good quality plantlets which had more adventitious roots, no overgown stem, no etiolated plantlets by the addition of 5, 10 ppm Ethrel. However, 20 ppm Ethrel caused etiolation of leaves and less roots. This result shows that 20 ppm Ethrel for gerbera plantlets was overdsage. The addition of ACC induced the deteriorated effect on the growth of plantlets. The damage of roots and stunted growth were observed in ACC treatment.

Effect of aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG) on preharvest fruit drop and maturity of apples Rev. Bras. Frutic.

Apple trees cultivars Gala and Fuji were sprayed four weeks before commercial harvest with aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG), at doses of 0, 125, or 250 mg L-1, and assessed for preharvest fruit drop, fruit growth, and maturation on tree. In 'Gala', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control treatment was 85%, and AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) reduced it to 10%. In 'Fuji', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control was 6%, while treatments with AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) increased fruit drop to 10%. AVG was a powerful retardant of fruit maturation for 'Gala' but not for 'Fuji'. A study was carried out to determine the effects of two cooling systems and the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFreshTM) on the incidence of superficial scald in apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) cv. Granny Smith. Fruit were collected from a commercial orchard (Colbún, Maule Region, Chile) during 2004-2005 season. A completely randomized design was used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, using cooling systems (normal and step-wise cooling) and application of 1-MCP (0 and 625 nL L-1 i.a.) as the main factors. ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of ethanol and two nitric oxide dose applications on the maintenance of the post-storage quality of ‘Galaxy’ apple during storage under controlled atmosphere (CA). This work aims at evaluate ethanol effect of acetaldehyde application in post-storage quality of 'Royal Gala' apples maintenance, and to compare them with consolidated storage techniques. Thus two experiments were performed during the years of 2008 and 2009. In the first experiment (2008), the application of ethanol, acetaldehyde or 1-MCP and ethylene scrubbing were tested. Fruits were stored in controlled atmosphere (CA) with 1.0kPa O2 and 2.0kPa CO2 at 0.5°C.
