Plant trait measurement is a very powerful and promising method for assessing the effects of land use change on ecosystem behavior in grasslands, but it is very time-consuming. Forest liming durably impact the communities of ectomycorrhizas and fungal epigeous fruiting bodies Inra

Le chaulage est une pratique forestière utilisée pour restaurer la nutrition minérale des arbres apparaissant sur sol acide. Il consiste en un apport direct de Ca et Mg au sol forestier, ce qui restaure la nutrition minérale de l’arbre, mais aussi modifie les communautés microbiennes du sol. Cette étude évalue les effets du chaulage sur les communautés fongiques hypogées (apex ectomycorrhiziens :« ECM ») et épigées (carpophores). Les résultats montrent que la modification des des propriétés chimiques du sol (pH et concentrations en Ca-Mg échangeables versus concentrations en Al et Fe échangeables) est un facteur de structuration de la communauté d’ECMs plus fort que l’arbre hôte. Functional diversity in low-input grassland farming systems: characterisation, effect and management Inra

High biodiversity in grasslands is widely perceived to have a major role in maintaining or enhancing the amenity and cultural value of landscapes in Europe. In this paper, we focus mainly at community level, evaluating factors that appear to influence biodiversity at farm and landscape levels. In order to establish generic principles we examine the maintenance of biodiversity in terms of maintaining or enhancing functional diversity (FD). We define plant functional types (PFTs), groups of species having the same function and/or the same effect in the grassland ecosystem, species identified on the basis of plant traits. Long-term changes in soil phosphorus status related to P budgets under maize monoculture and mineral P fertilization Inra

Monitoring soil phosphorus (P) changes under continuous cropping over decades is an important agronomic and environmental issue. The aim was to determine soil P dynamics in the plough layer as a function of cumulative P budgets (Bcum) across extended cropping periods (7, 12, and 17 yr) for four rates of mineral P fertilization. This field experiment was established in 1975 on a slightly alkaline, sandy loamy soil (luvic Arenosol). Soil P was assessed by three P tests: the concentration of P ions in solution (Cp), Olsen (POl), and Mehlich-3 P (PM3). Annual P budget was calculated as P applied minus P exported by the grain. Remote sensing techniques offer a unique solution for mapping the growth and nitrogen status of crops and monitoring its time course. Therefore these maps are powerful tools for recommending spatially precise cultural practices, and particularly nitrogen dressing. In this paper, we review the main issues to be addressed for estimating crop variables from remote sensing and for using them for managing variable rate fertilizer application.The derivation of canopy state variables such as the leaf area index (LAI) and chlorophyll content (Cab) is first addressed. Voies d’amélioration des impacts environnementaux des systèmes céréaliers : une première synthèse à partir des travaux de l’INRA Inra

Le contexte actuel requiert une meilleure harmonie entre l'agriculture et l'environnement, aussi la recherche agronomique est-elle souvent questionnée sur ses investigations en la matière. Cet article présente le résultat d'un travail d'inventaire portant sur des voies d'amélioration des impacts environnementaux en systèmes céréaliers. Une soixantaine de travaux conduits par l’INRA en relation avec ses partenaires du monde agricole ont été répertoriés et classés en trois grands domaines : amélioration de l’efficience des intrants, substitution d’un intrant par un autre, reconception des systèmes de production. Wood ash applications to temperate forest ecosystems-potential and drawbacks Inra

The objectives of the present work were (a) to quantify the effects of wood ash on forest ecosystems through a meta-analysis approach associated with a detailed review of the literature (mainly composed of work carried out in Nordic countries) and (b) to extrapolate the effects on forest growth to other contexts (i.e. warm temperate countries) by identifying the cases for which wood ash applications can be beneficial to forest production.
