Acceptability of interventions to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV-1 in West Africa IRD
Cartoux, M.; Msellati, Philippe; Rouamba, O.; Coulibaly, D.; Meda, N.; Blibolo, D.; Mandelbrot, L.; Van de Perre, P.; Dabis, F..
Would HIV-1-positive African women use interventions of AIDS testing, medication (oral and vaginal), and vaginal disinfection to reduce the likelihood of HIV-1 transmission to their child ? In this pilot study in two west African cities (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso), social workers gave a native-language questionnaire to 607 pregnant women at four Maternal and Child Health Centers. The women were asked about their perception of the HIV test ; consequences of testing and counseling ; choice of medical intervention to protect the future child ; and feelings about being in a randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. Most accepted the principle of an AIDS test, said they wanted the agreement of their regular partner before...

Age-related changes and location of type I, III and IV collagens during skeletal muscle development of double-muscled and normal bovine foetuses Inra
Listrat, A.; Picard, B.; Geay, Y..
The aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes in collagen content in muscles of normal and double-muscled (DM) bovine foetuses. Psoas major (PM) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles were collected from foetuses at 110 to 260 days post-conception (p.c.), frozen and powdered. Cyanogen bromide (CNBr) digestion and hydroxyproline measure ments were carried out on the powder. CNBr peptides underwent SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and type I and III collagen relative variations were measured by densitometric analysis. Type I and III procollagen mRNA were located by in situ hybridization and types I, III and IV collagen located by indirect immunofluorescence. Although there was no significant difference between normal and DM animals in the...

Mother-to-child transmission of human T-cell lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I/II) in Gabon : a prospective follow-up of 4 years IRD
Nyambi, P.N.; Ville, Y.; Louwagie, J.; Bedjabaga, I.; Glowaczower, E.; Peeters, Martine; Kerouedan, D.; Dazza, M.C.; Larouzé, B.; Van der Groen, G.; Delaporte, Eric.
For 4 years, we determined the mode and risk of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-I in a prospective cohort of 34 children born to seropositive mothers in Franceville, Gabon. We also determined the prevalence of antibodies to HTLV-I/II in siblings born to seropositive mothers. Antibodies to HTLV-I/II were detected by Western blot, and the proviral DNA was detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The risk of seroconversion to anti-HTLV-I for the 4 years of follow-yp was 17.5 %. Anti-HTLV-I/II and proviral DNA were only detected after age 18 months. We observed a seroprevalence rate of 15 % among the siblings born to HTLV-I/II seropositive mothers. Furthermore, we report a case of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-II infection in a population...
