A comparative study on antioxidant activity of different parts of lotus (Nelumbo nuficera Gaertn) rhizome Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
YANG,Dongmei; ZHANG,Qian; REN,Guoping; YING,Tiejin.
Abstract In this study, the antioxidant activities of different parts of lotus (Nelumbo nuficera Gaertn) rhizome were compared. The total phenolic content of lotus rhizome was determined, and Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay and β-carotene-linoleic acid assay were performed to assess the antioxidant activity of lotus rhizome. Results showed that there was a significant difference in total phenolic content and antioxidant activity between any two of four parts of lotus rhizome. The order of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in different parts of lotus rhizome was as follows: peel of old lotus rhizome > peel of young lotus rhizome > flesh of old lotus...

Antioxidant capacity and composition of pitanga seeds Ciência Rural
Bagetti,Milena; Facco,Elizete Maria Pesamosca; Rodrigues,Daniele Bobrowski; Vizzotto,Márcia; Emanuelli,Tatiana.
Food industry generates a significant amount of seed wastes from the juice production, frozen pulps and jams. Considering that the characterization of wastes is the first step to determine their potential use, the aim of the present study was to determine the composition and the antioxidant capacity of seeds from pitanga fruits with different flesh colors (purple, red and orange). Chemical composition results revealed that pitanga seeds are a good source of insoluble dietary fiber, with low protein and fat levels, and no relevant differences were found among pitanga seeds from different flesh colors. Pitanga seed extracts had powerful antioxidant capacity that was partially correlated to their high phenolic content and showed some variation according to...

Atividade antioxidante e antimicrobiana do extrato de Lentinula edodes. Repositório Alice
BACH, F.; HELM, C. V.; PEDRO, A. C.; STAFUSSA, A. P.; MACIEL, G. M.; HAMINIUK, C. W. I..

Comparison of the total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of polyphenol-rich fruits grown in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fredes,Carolina; Montenegro,Gloria; Zoffoli,Juan Pablo; Santander,Francisca; Robert,Paz.
In the last 10 years, interest in research on polyphenol-rich fruit species has increased due to the potential health benefits of these species, mainly attributed to their high anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity. Six polyphenol-rich fruit species (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pomegranates and maqui berries) were harvested at the same maturity stage during the same growing season and were compared according to their total phenolic (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and total anthocyanin (pH differential method) contents and antioxidant activity using ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP assay) and 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity methods. With the results of this study, the polyphenolic status of the...

Effect of fruit ripening on bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of apple beverages Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SILVA,Karolline Marques da; ZIELINSKI,Acácio Antonio Ferreira; BENVENUTTI,Laís; BORTOLINI,Débora Gonçalves; ZARDO,Danianni Marinho; BELTRAME,Flávio Luís; NOGUEIRA,Alessandro; ALBERTI,Aline.
Abstract The effect of the variety (Gala, Lis Gala and Fuji Suprema) and the ripening stage (unripe, ripe and senescent) of apples on the phenolic compounds (HPLC) and antioxidant capacity (FRAP and DPPH) of apple juices and ciders were evaluated. The phenolic content of the Gala and Lis Gala apple juices decreased from the unripe to ripe stages and increased from the ripe to the senescent stages, while in the case of Fuji Suprema these values decreased with senescence. Fermentation caused a reduction (17 to 50%) of phenolics and the most affected were hydroxycinnamic acids and flavanols. Principal component analysis confirmed the influence of variety, and the use of multivariate regression (PLS) made it possible to create significant models (p < 0.05)...

Polyphenol content and antioxidant activity of maqui (Aristotelia chilensis Molina Stuntz) during fruit development and maturation in Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis Molina Stuntz, Elaeocarpaceae) is a Chilean native species which produces small berries that are mainly collected from the wild. The health benefits of maqui fruit are attributed to their high polyphenol content as well as their wide variety of anthocyanins and flavonols. One of the main factors that affect the polyphenol content in fruit is the maturity stage at harvest. The objective of this study was to determine total phenol and total anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity (by ferric reducing ability of plasma FRAP assay) of maqui fruits harvested at different fruit maturity stages from two wild populations located in Central Chile. Each maturity stage was determined by days from fruit set, berry size, and soluble...

Sapucaia nut (Lecythis pisonis Cambess) and its by-products: a promising and underutilized source of bioactive compounds. Part II: phenolic compounds profile. Repositório Alice
DEMOLINER, F.; POLICARPI, P. de B.; VASCONCELOS, L. F. L.; VITALI, L.; MICKE, G. A.; BLOCK, J. M..
In this study, the profile of the bioactive compounds of sapucaia nut (Lecythis pisonis Cambess) and its byproducts have been investigated. The phenolic profile by LC-ESI-MS/MS, the total phenolic content, the condensed tannins and the antioxidant activity of the sapucaia nut and shell were determined. 14 phenolic compounds were identified in the sapucaia nut extract, primarily phenolic acids and flavonoids. Catechin, epicatechin, myricetin, ellagic acid and ferulic acid presented significant correlation to the antioxidant activity. The sapucaia shell contained 22 phenolic compounds, 13 of which were quantified. The sapucaia shell extract showed a high content of total phenolic compounds, a high condensed tannins content, and high antioxidant activity. The...
