A mechanistic model predicting the accumulation of tomato fruit sugars was developed in order (i) to dissect the relative influence of three underlying processes: assimilate supply (S), metabolic transformation of sugars into other compounds (M), and dilution by water uptake (D); and (ii) to estimate the genetic variability of S, M, and D. The latter was estimated in a population of 20 introgression lines derived from the introgression of a wild tomato species (Solanum chmielewskii) into S. lycopersicum, grown under two contrasted fruit load conditions. Fluctuations in sugar content are not determinant in explaining variations in vitamin C in tomato fruit Inra

The present study aimed to clarify the relationship between sugars and vitamin C in fruit. The objective was to determine whether vitamin C content was regulated by sugar content due to the role of sugar as a precursor for vitamin C. During summer, maximal content in sugar and vitamin C were found in both genotypes tested Solanum lycopersicon ‘Cervil’ and ‘Levovil’. During autumn, fruit pruning increased fruit size and hexose content but fruit vitamin C content did not increase. Therefore sugar substrate was not limiting for vitamin C synthesis during autumn. We demonstrated for two cultivars, ‘Cervil’ and ‘Levovil’, with different sugar accumulation profiles during ripening, that sugar content was not determinant in the regulation of vitamin C content....

The influence of fruit load on the tomato pericarp metabolome in a Solanum chmielewskii introgression line population Inra

It has been recently demonstrated, utilizing interspecific introgression lines of tomato, generated from the cross between Solanum lycopersicum and the wild species Solanum pennellii, that the efficiency of photosynthate partitioning exerts a considerable influence on the metabolic composition of tomato fruit pericarp. In order to further evaluate the influence of source-sink interaction, metabolite composition was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in a different population. Trends in apple training in France – an architectural and ecophysiological perspective Inra

Vertical Axis, Solaxe and now Centrifugal Training systems are considered to be the main stages of apple tree training over the last three decades in France. These improvements in training and pruning procedures adapted to high-density planting systems were based on improved knowledge of (1) architectural characteristics of cultivars (e.g. ‘fruiting types’), and (2) reaction of the tree to manipulation (root system, pruning, bending). Although mango has been grown for a very long time and cultivation is increasing, productivity is still low and irregular. In this work, we took up the common hypotheses in which fruiting under hot subtropical conditions competes strongly for limited carbon resources, and the strategy of the mango tree is to adjust carbon investment between the fruit and vegetative compartments. If flowering is too abundant for mango tree, the assimilates produced by photosynthesis will not fit the demand during fruit set and growth.
