Can Sweet Sorghum and Sweetpotato Ethanol Contribute to Self-Sufficiency of Small Farms? Organic Eprints
Bomford, Michael K.; Silvernail, Anthony F..
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) and sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) are promising crops for advanced biofuel production because they are better suited than corn (Zea mays L.) to low input production on small farms in the south. They can be considered advanced feedstocks only if lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions are less than 50% of basoline baseline emissions. Both sweet potato and sweet sorghum are multifunctional crops, with potential to simultaneously produce human food, animal feed, and biofuel feedstock. Kentucky State University is exploring the potential for organic production techniques and decentralized processing systems to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of energy produced from these crops at a range of small farm scales. In 2009...

Castel, Laurie; Sieffert, André; Warlop , Francois; Tchamitchian, Marc.
Innovation in agriculture is needed to face multiple challenges and reach sustainability. We aim at involving farmers in the design of innovative pilot farms, using agroforestry and agroecology to maximize ecosystemic services and minimize reliance to plant protection products. Projects are designed for long channels or for direct selling, with consequences in term of crop diversity and plot size. They started in 2013 and will be run on a long-term basis.

Einfluss der Saatzeit bei Sojabohnen Organic Eprints
Urbatzka, Peer; Kimmelmann, Stefan; Jobst, Florian.
Four seeding dates (end of March, mid and end of April, onset of May) of soybeans were compared in a yearlong field trial in Bavaria. Soy plants with seeding date at the onset of May were damaged by doves, but only the development was delayed for approximately one week and the number of plants was not influenced. Grain yield and crude protein yield was highest with seeding at the end of April. Seeding at May resulted in significant lower dry matter content and obviously delayed harvest with the risk of a complete loss.

Lohnt sich der Anbau von Körnerleguminosen? Organic Eprints
Weitbrecht, Britta; Pahl, Hubert.

Productivity and profitability on cotton-based production systems under organic and conventional management in India Organic Eprints
Forster, Dionys; Andres, Christian; Verma, Rajeev; Zundel, Christine; Messmer, Monika; Mäder, Paul.
The debate on the relative benefits of conventional and organic farming systems is more topical than ever. The achievements of conventional high-input agriculture were based to a large extent on fossil fuels and largely brought about at the cost of deteriorating soil fertility. Developing more sustainable farming practices on a large scale is of utmost importance. However, information about the performance of farming systems under organic and conventional management in tropical and subtropical regions is sparse. This study presents agronomic and economic data from the conversion phase (2007-2010) of a farming systems comparison trial on a Vertisol soil in central India. A cotton-soybean-wheat crop rotation under biodynamic, organic and conventional (with...

Wintererbsenanbau: Ökonomische Aspekte für Praxisbetriebe Organic Eprints
Wolf, Daniel; Möller, Detlev; Schmidt, Harald; Gronle, Annkathrin; Böhm, Herwart.
The use of winter peas becomes more and more common in organic agriculture. In field trials, winter pea-triticale intercrops were compared with spring peas concerning their yield performance. The differences in gross margins were calculated by using data from origin farms. Savings in seed costs (-136 €/ha) and machine costs (-13 €/ha) could be gained by replacing spring pea sole crops with winter pea-triticale intercrops. Additionally, there were yield increases of 33 % for intercropped winter peas, which resulted in an extra benefit of 378 €/ha. Aside from that, the intercropped triticale provides an extra income.
