Dietary protein and carbohydrate affect feeding behavior and metabolic regulation in hummingbirds (Melanotrochilus fuscus) RChHN
ZANOTTO,FLAVIA P.; BICUDO,J.E.P.W..
The objective of this work was to link hummingbird feeding behavior with metabolic regulation and in addition to assess whether dietary composition would affect entrance into torpor. Hummingbirds were fed a combination of diets with contrasting amounts of protein and carbohydrate. The diets were composed of the following: 2.4 % protein (P) - 12 % sucrose (S) and 0.8 % protein (P) - 36 % sucrose (S). The main findings showed that periods of feeding on each of the diets could be distinguished as separate bouts or feeding events. Hummingbirds presented to high protein-low carbohydrate diets (2.4P-12S) ingested a larger volume of diet, fed for longer (both around 1.7x) and increased the interval between feedings compared with hummingbirds fed diets 0.8P-36S....

First record of Eucalyptus spp. bark-stripping by brown-capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus, Primates: Cebidae). Repositório Alice
LIEBSCH, D.; MIKICH, S. B..

Food intake and weight of lactating rats maintained on different protein-calorie diets, and pup growth BJMBR
Cambraia,R.P.B.; Vannucchi,H.; De-Oliveira,L.M..
Studies on rats maintained on low-protein-calorie diets during the lactation period show that food intake decreases. This process results in weight loss and a delay in litter development. The purpose of the present study was to determine the alterations in food intake, maternal weight and litter growth during lactation when dams were exposed to diets with different levels of protein and carbohydrate. Female Wistar rats receiving one of 4 different diets, A (N = 14), B (N = 14), C (N = 9) and D (N = 9), were used. Diet A contained 16% protein and 66% carbohydrate; diet B, 6% protein and 77% carbohydrate; diet C, 6% protein and 66% carbohydrate; diet D, 16% protein and 56% carbohydrate. Thus, C and D diets were hypocaloric, while A and B were isocaloric. The...

Occurrence of chironomid larvae living inside fallen-fruits in Atlantic Forest streams, Brasil Entomología
Roque,Fabio de Oliveira; Siqueira,Tadeu; Trivinho-Strixino,Susana.
Occurrence of chironomid larvae living inside fallen-fruits in Atlantic Forest streams, Brazil - The Chironomidae larvae explore a wide variety of habitats and kinds of food. In this study we reported the use of fallen-fruits by chironomid larvae in low order streams in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We found chironomid larvae mining fruit tissue of 12 tree species. Seven morphospecies of Endotribelos were identified, including the species E. albatum and E. grodhaus found for the first time in Brazil. Our results suggest that larvae of Endotribelos are the commonest insect group living inside fallen-fruits in streams.

CAMPOS, M. M.; Ana Luiza da Costa Cruz Borges; Carlos Giovani Pancoti; Ricardo Reis e Silva; Tainá Silvestre Moreira; LOPES, F. C. F..
Twelve multiparous 7/8 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows were fed diets based on chopped sugarcane supplied in natura (control) or after being hydrolyzed (fresh matter basis) for 24 h with 0.5%, 1% or 2% calcium oxide (CaO). The voluntary consumption and digestibility of dietary nutrients, milk production and composition, and feeding behavior of cows were evaluated. A switchback design with three periods, four treatments and three blocks was used. The linear and quadratic effects of the treatments were analyzed using orthogonal contrasts, and the effects were considered significant when P ≤ 0.05. Compared to the that in the control treatment, the Ca concentration increased by 297%, 570% and 1,083% in the diets including sugarcane hydrolyzed with 0.5%, 1%...

Serotonergic neurons in the caudal raphe nuclei discharge in association with activity of masticatory muscles BJMBR
There is a dense serotonergic projection from nucleus raphe pallidus and nucleus raphe obscurus to the trigeminal motor nucleus and serotonin exerts a strong facilitatory action on the trigeminal motoneurons. Some serotonergic neurons in these caudal raphe nuclei increase their discharge during feeding. The objective of the present study was to investigate the possibility that the activity of these serotonergic neurons is related to activity of masticatory muscles. Cats were implanted with microelectrodes and gross electrodes. Caudal raphe single neuron activity, electrocorticographic activity, and splenius, digastric and masseter electromyographic activities were recorded during active behaviors (feeding and grooming), during quiet waking and during...

Some observations on biology and feeding behavior in two southern California pycnogonids Naturalis
Bain, Bonnie.
During the years 1980 to 1982, two common southern California pycnogonids, Anoplodactylus californicus Hall, 1912 and Ammothea hilgendorfi (Böhm, 1879) were routinely collected and kept in aquaria. Observations were made both in the field and in the laboratory on feeding behavior and other aspects of the behavior and biology of the two species. It was concluded that, of the two species, Anoplodactylus californicus would be a good candidate to raise in the laboratory for further studies on the biology of these organisms.

Sources of paralytic shellfish toxin accumulation variability in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Pousse, Emilien; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Hegaret, Helene; Jean, Fred.
This study was designed to assess the contribution of feeding behavior to inter-individual variability of paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) accumulation in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. For this purpose 42 oysters were exposed for 2 days to non-toxic algae and then for 2 other days to the PST producer Alexandrium minutum. Individual clearance rate (CR) of oysters was continuously monitored over the 4 days using an ecophysiological measurement system. Comparison of CR values when exposed to toxic and non toxic algae allowed to estimate a clearance rate inhibition index (CRII). Toxin concentration of oysters was quantified at the end of the experiment. These data allowed to estimate the toxin accumulation efficiency (TAE) as the ratio of toxin...

The integration of diet, physiology, and ecology of nectar-feeding birds RChHN
McWHORTER,TODD J.; LOPEZ-CALLEJA,M. VICTORIA.
Balance between energy acquisition and expense is critical for the survival and reproductive success of organisms. Energy budgets may be limited by environmental factors as well as by animal design. These restrictions may be especially important for small endotherms such as hummingbirds, which have exceedingly high energy demands. Many nectar-feeding bird species decrease food intake when sugar concentration in food is increased. This feeding response can be explained by two alternative hypotheses: compensatory feeding and physiological constraint. The compensatory feeding hypothesis predicts that if birds vary intake to maintain a constant energy intake to match energy expenditures, then they should increase intake when expenditures are increased....
