A simple system was used to simulate the effect of alternating toxic (paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins) and non-toxic microalgal diets on oyster feeding behaviors and rates of toxin accumulation. These experimental conditions were meant to reflect, to some extent, the incoming and outgoing fluxes of toxic algae observed at the mouth of the Penze estuary (Northern Brittany, France). The bay of Somme is the first French field of cockles (Cerastoderma edule) with a production amounting to 3000 tons per year on average. In order to improve the stock management, it is necessary to increase our knowledge of this species. This study is looking at the growth of the common cockle. First, was carried out a morphometric analysis of the two left and right valves, which has revealed a perfect symmetry of the shell and has allowed us to establish strong correlations among the morphometric parameters. Development of a coastal upwelling front driven by advection and topographic effects in the North Sea-Baltic Sea transition ArchiMer

Upwelling of cold. saline, and nutrient rich water was observed in late September 1999 along an east-west transect in the SW Kattegat. The Kattegat forms part of the transitional zone between the high saline North Sea and the low saline Baltic Sea. The upwelling occurred after an extended period of northward flow and eastern winds in the Kattegat, that changed into a southward flow as wind ceased. The upwelling was the result of a combination of high current speeds and bottom topography whereby the high-speed inflow water was forced towards the surface at the slope. ABSTRACT The effect of pressure on the fluorescence of tryptophan in the presence of metal ions was studied by fluorescence spectrometry. It was found that at 60 MPa, the fluorescence intensity of M/Trp mixtures (M represented metal ions) increased compared to that at atmosphere pressure. The relative fluorescence efficiency of M/Trp mixtures increased with pressure. When the M/Trp ratio was above 10:1, the relative fluorescence efficiency in decreasing order was Cu2+/Trp mixtures, Ni2+/Trp mixtures and Mg2+ (K+)/Trp mixtures. Experiments were performed to examine the effect of salt stress and GA3-priming on initial growth of two rapeseed cultivars, one tolerant and one sensitive to salt stress during germination. Seedlings from seeds germinated in salty (as NaCl) and non salty substrate were grown in salty and non salty hydroponics. Salt stress reduced seedling growth of the two genotypes consistently with their degree of stress tolerance during germination. Spathiphyllum spp. es conocida comúnmente como cuna de moisés, se utiliza como planta ornamental, presenta una hoja modificada (espata), de color blanco, y conforme madura enverdece. Este fenómeno típico de algunas Aráceas es poco conocido. En el presente trabajo se analizaron algunos parámetros que intervienen en el enverdecimiento. We introduce a new, high quality, low cost and versatile LEDs-based handset device that emits high power UV and white light, which can be used interchangeably. It offers power control and has long battery life. Even though it is optimized to detect and collect scorpions under low light conditions, it can also be used with other groups of fluorescent organisms. The device achieved superior performance in field and laboratory trials when compared with a 12 LEDs low power UV flashlight, and a 46 W black fluorescent light lamp, to locate Tityus serrulatus Lutz & Mello, 1922.

Influence of chromium in Laguncularia racemosa (L). Gaertn f. physiology Braz. J. Plant Physiol.

Most studies of chromium have been realized in the sediments and in mangrove trees. However, little is known about its effect on growth and metabolism in this vegetation. L. racemosa plants were grown in solution with 20% of ionic strength of Hoagland and Arnon containing 100 mM NaCl and supplemented with 0.00, 0.05 and 0.50 mg L-1 of Cr+3. The growth, the pigments and gas exchange measurements showed no changes in response to doses of chromium. After 30 days the initiation of treatments, plants of L. racemosa had average 0.559 g of total dry weight, 1.34 mg L-1 of total chlorophyll and 7.9 µmol m-2 s-1 of A (CO2 photosynthetic assimilation). Under acid soil conditions, solubility of aluminum (Al) increases leading to toxicity for plants. Al accumulator species such as tea, however, accumulate high levels of Al in tissues without toxicity symptoms. In this work, Al localization and compartmentation were studied in tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] grown hydroponically at 0 or 100 µM Al for eight weeks. Plant dry matter production was significantly higher in the presence of Al and accumulated up to 1.21 and 6.18 mg Al/g DW in the leaves and roots, respectively. Several diarylamines in the benzo[b]thiophene series were prepared in good to high yields by palladium-catalysed amination of ethyl 3-bromobenzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylate with anilines and 5-aminoindole in the presence of Pd(OAc)2, BINAP and Cs2CO3 in toluene. The presence of the ester group at the 2-position of the benzo[b]thiophene moiety increases the yields and lowers the heating times relative to the reactions performed with 3-bromobenzo[b]thiophene.
