Acute effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on neuroleptic-induced catalepsy in mice BJMBR
Pires,J.G.P.; Bonikovski,V.; Futuro-Neto,H.A..
Depression found in Parkinson disease (PD) usually responds to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Drugs that modify experimental neuroleptic catalepsy (NC) might affect extrapyramidal symptoms in PD. Therefore, the effects of SSRIs on NC were tested in mice, 26-36 g, separated by sex. Catalepsy was induced with haloperidol (H; 1 mg/kg, ip) and measured at 30-min intervals using a bar test. An SSRI (sertraline, ST; paroxetine, PX; fluoxetine) or vehicle (C) was injected ip 30 min before H. Dunnett's test was used for comparison of means. ST (1-5 mg/kg) or PX (1-5 mg/kg) attenuated NC, with a similar inhibition found in both sexes (5 mg/kg, 180 min: ST - males: 124 ± 10 vs 714 ± 15 s in C; females: 116 ± 10 vs 718 ± 6 s in C; PX - males: 106 ±...

Anxiogenic-like effect of acute and chronic fluoxetine on rats tested on the elevated plus-maze BJMBR
Silva,M.T.A.; Alves,C.R.R.; Santarem,E.M.M..
The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine (FLX) is widely prescribed for depression and anxiety-related disorders. On the other hand, enhanced serotonergic transmission is known to be classically related to anxiety. In this study, the effects of acute (5.0 mg/kg) and chronic (5.0 mg/kg, 22 days) FLX were investigated in both food-deprived and non-deprived rats tested in the elevated plus-maze. Significant main effects of the three factors (drug, food condition and administration regimen) were observed, but no interaction between them. The administration of either acute or chronic FLX resulted in an anxiogenic effect, as detected by a significant reduction in the percentage of time spent in the open arms and in the percentage of open arm...

Changes in tau phosphorylation levels in the hippocampus and frontal cortex following chronic stress BJMBR
Yang,C.; Guo,X.; Wang,G.H.; Wang,H.L.; Liu,Z.C.; Liu,H.; Zhu,Z.X.; Li,Y..
Studies have indicated that early-life or early-onset depression is associated with a 2- to 4-fold increased risk of developing Alzheimers disease (AD). In AD, aggregation of an abnormally phosphorylated form of the tau protein may be a key pathological event. Tau is known to play a major role in promoting microtubule assembly and stabilization, and in maintaining the normal morphology of neurons. Several studies have reported that stress may induce tau phosphorylation. The main aim of the present study was to investigate possible alterations in the tau protein in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of 32 male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) and then re-exposed to CUMS to mimic depression and the recurrence of...

Effects of acute administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors on sympathetic nerve activity BJMBR
Tiradentes,R.V.; Pires,J.G.P.; Silva,N.F.; Ramage,A.G.; Santuzzi,C.H.; Futuro Neto,H.A..
Serotonergic mechanisms have an important function in the central control of circulation. Here, the acute effects of three selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on autonomic and cardiorespiratory variables were measured in rats. Although SSRIs require 2-3 weeks to achieve their full antidepressant effects, it has been shown that they cause an immediate inhibition of 5-HT reuptake. Seventy male Wistar rats were anesthetized with urethane and instrumented to record blood pressure, heart rate, renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), and respiratory frequency. At lower doses, the acute cardiovascular effects of fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline administered intravenously were insignificant and variable. At middle and higher doses, a...

Evidence of interaction between fluoxetine and isosorbide dinitrate on neuroleptic-induced catalepsy in mice BJMBR
Pires,J.G.P.; Fonseca,F.C.G.; Woelffel,A.B.; Futuro-Neto,H.A..
Drugs which influence 5-HTergic mechanisms can modify neuroleptic-induced catalepsy (NC) in rodents, a phenomenon produced by striatal dopamine (DA) receptor blockade. Previous research also suggests a role for endogenous nitric oxide (NO) in the modulation of striatal DAergic neurotransmission; in addition, NO seems to play a role in the 5-HT reuptake mechanism. It is known that clomipramine potentiates NC in mice, but the reported effects of selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in this model are rather contradictory. We then decided to re-address this issue, investigating the effect of fluoxetine (FX), an SSRI, on NC. In view of the ubiquitous role of NO as a central neuromodulator, we also studied the effect of isosorbide dinitrate (ID), a...

Histomorphometric Evaluation of Soleus and Lateral Gastrocnemius Muscles of Animals Submitted to Pharmacological Manipulation with Fluoxetine International Journal of Morphology
Caiaffo,Vitor; Ribeiro,Alice Sá Carneiro; de Oliveira,Belisa Duarte Ribeiro; de Albuquerque,Yuri Mateus Lima; de Moraes,Silvia Regina Arruda.
The pharmacological manipulation with selective inhibitor of serotonin reuptake (SSRIs) can modify the operation of the serotonergic system and may facilitate or inhibit the action of this system, inducing changes in the morphology of the skeletal muscle of rats. The objective of this study was to evaluate the action of the treatment with fluoxetine during the critical period of the animal´s life on development of the soleus and lateral gastrocnemius muscles, under the aspects of weight, the number of nuclei of myocyte cells and cross-sectional area of muscle fibers. Twenty four (30 and 90-day-old) male Wistar rats were used. They were treated with saline solution (NaCl 0.9%; 1 ml/100 g of body weight) or fluoxetine (10 mg; 1 ml/100g of body weight). The...

Mirtazapine versus fluoxetine in the treatment of panic disorder BJMBR
Ribeiro,L.; Busnello,J.V.; Kauer-Sant'Anna,M.; Madruga,M.; Quevedo,J.; Busnello,E.A.D.; Kapczinski,F..
Mirtazapine is an antidepressant whose side effect profile differs from that of first-line agents (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) used in the treatment of panic disorder. The present study compared the effect of mirtazapine and fluoxetine in the treatment of panic disorder in a double-blind, randomized, flexible-dose trial conducted with outpatients. After a 1-week single-blind placebo run-in, 27 patients entered an 8-week double-blind phase in which they were randomly assigned to treatment with either mirtazapine or fluoxetine. Both groups improved significantly in all but one efficacy measure (P<=0.01). ANOVA showed no significant differences between the two treatment groups in number of panic attacks, Hamilton Anxiety Scale or Sheehan...

Cavalcanti,Ully Dias Nascimento Távora; Baratella Evêncio,Liriane; Evêncio Neto,Joaquim; Castro,Raul Manhães de; Cardona,Aryana Soares; Melo,Marina Lins Maymone de; Lins,Rafael Claudino.
The TMJ has been to the Dental community a key point in the search of knowledge, being it part of the temporomandibular joint complex and of the estomatognathic system which are in charge of the mastication, speech, swallowing, as well as participation in breathing and taste perception. For the majority of the women in serious state of depression, which do not respond psychotherapeutic treatment, pharmacological treatment it's applied. The antidepressants serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most recommended in these cases. The teratogenic effect of the SSRIs is considered controversial, studies done with women who used these drugs during the pregnancy showed that the respiratory and central nervous systems are the most affected, was...

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the application of fluoxetine a highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) in rats during the suckling period induces changes in testicular development. Groups of newborn male rats were randomly assigned with different doses of fluoxetine 24 hours after birth. Each litter stayed with its respective mother during 21 days. Body weight (BW) was measured daily from the 1st -21st day to calculate daily doses of fluoxetine. 5 mg (T1), 10 mg (T2) 20 mg (T3) or deionized water, were injected intraperitoneally. On the 21st day, animals were heparinized, anesthetized and blood was collected by cardiac puncture to determine by radioimmunoassay the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels....

The alteration of GABA levels has been involved in psychiatric disorders. Several studies have shown the pre-germinated brown rice (PGBR), that is a brown rice (BR) induced slight germination by soaking in the water, contains abundant of nutrients than BR especially GABA. However, there are few studies examining the effects of PGBR on brain functions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of PGBR using Oryza sativa var. glutinosa on the depressive behavior in a rat model of depression using forced swimming test. Animals were divided into five groups; stress control group was treated with distilled water, fluoxetine group was treated with fluoxetine antidepressant and PGBR I, II and III groups were treated with PGBR 1, 3 and 5...
