A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FOOD QUALITY ASSURANCE SCHEMES: THE CASE OF NEULAND AND EUREPGAP AgEcon
Gay, Stephan Hubertus; Schneider, Andreas.
Food Quality Assurance Schemes (QAS) are widely applied in the European Union. Neuland and EurepGAP represent two different approaches. Neuland differentiates meat clearly by a strict emphasis on rules regarding animal welfare to provide consumers with meat produced at a high animal welfare standard. EurepGAP certifies the compliance to international accepted standards with regard to Good Agricultural Practise to ease the exchange of products throughout the supply chain. In terms of overall benefits and costs, the study showed that for both QAS the benefits clearly outweigh the costs. This paper compares the schemes and their implications for the agro-food chain.

A Diagnostic Perspective Assessment of the Production and Marketing System for Mangoes in the Eastern Caribbean AgEcon
Hrapsky, Alan; Weber, Michael T.; Riley, Harold.
The objective of this research was to provide USAID with a diagnostic-prescriptive assessment of the mango commodity system that would be useful in the design and management of USAID’s project portfolio. A secondary objective was to demonstrate how a market-guided food systems approach could be applied to a particular commodity, thus facilitating coordination of vertical stages in the agricultural production and marketing system. The food systems approach begins with identification of consumer requirements in terms of product specifications and volume flows, examines the production changes necessary to achieve these requirements, then systematically diagnoses constraints at each stage in the production/marketing chain, and prescribes realistic...

A Value Chain Task Force Approach for Managing Private-Public Partnerships: Zamiba’s Task Force on Acceleration of Cassava Utilization. AgEcon
Chitundu, Maureen; Droppelmann, Klaus; Haggblade, Steven.
Smallholder farmers operate in vertical supply chains. Therefore, an understanding of key opportunities and constraints up through the value chain becomes necessary for sustaining smallholder growth. Yet market analysis is of little value unless key private and public sector stakeholders agree to implement necessary reforms. This paper advocates an approach which marries together value chain analysis with a stakeholder taskforce to ensure that analysis of opportunities and constraints gets translated into actions that will facilitate commercial growth. Using Zambia’s cassava task force as an example, the paper describes the value chain task force method and identifies elements critical to its effective implementation.

Agricultural and Food Security Policy Analysis in Central America: Assessing Local Institutional Capacity, Data Availability, and Outcomes AgEcon
Tschirley, David L.; Flores, Luis; Mather, David.
Performance of the agricultural sector in developing countries is fundamental to ensuring robust and equitable economic growth and broad-based food security. Yet donor support to agricultural development in developing countries has declined continuously for 30 years. This same period saw dramatic deterioration in developing countries’ institutional capacity to provide services to their agricultural sectors. These trends may now be changing, due in part to the global food price crisis of 2007 and 2008 and concerns that it unleashed about the world’s ability to feed its poorest inhabitants. This paper reports on the results of a two week trip to Guatemala and Nicaragua made by Michigan State University’s Food Security Group. The purpose of the trip was to...

Agricultural Market Performance and Determinants of Fertilizer Use in Ethiopia AgEcon
Demeke, Mulat; Kelly, Valerie A.; Jayne, Thomas S.; Said, Ali; Le Vallee, Jean-Charles; Chen, H..
This paper examines how the fertilizer sector in general, and farmers’ demand for fertilizer in particular, has evolved since the introduction of fertilizer sector reforms in Ethiopia. There is much debate in the agricultural development literature about whether fertilizer use in Africa is constrained primarily by poor input distribution systems, by farmers’ lack of knowledge concerning the benefits and correct use of fertilizer, or by lack of effective demand because the product is simply not profitable enough. This paper looks at each of these issues in an effort to understand the relative importance of the different constraints and how well current policies are addressing the problems. It attempts to identify additional policy measures needed to...
