Analysis of fouling and juice quality in crossflow ultrafiltration of watermelon juice Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BHATTACHARJEE,Chiranjit; SAXENA,Vinod Kumar; DUTTA,Suman.
Abstract Raw watermelon juice was clarified in a laboratory scale flat plate ultrafiltration system incorporating polyethersulphone membranes with a molecular weight cut-off of 50 kDa. The experiments have been carried out over a wide range of trans-membrane pressures (1-3 bar). The effect of ultrafiltration with molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 50 kDa PES membrane on permeate properties is reported. The effects of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) on permeate flux and resistances were studied. The flux decay was analyzed through the resistance in series model which showed increase of both reversible and irreversible resistance with trans-membrane pressure, The TSS content of the permeate was found to be almost the same with feed while the ascorbic acid...

Detection de fissure sur structure en mer en presence de salissure marine projet "Crabe" ArchiMer
Daste, S.
The "CRABE" method is a crack detection technique based on the use of low electromagnetic frequencies. This (patented) method relies on a global injection of current within the structure under inspection. The presence of a crack shall cause a disruption in the current flow, and consequently of the magnetic field off the surface in the vicinity of a defect. It is this magnetic signature which is detected by the magnetic sensor used with "CRABE". The major advantage of this process, developed by TRAVOCEAN and the LETI Division of CEA with the help of IFREMER, appears clearly: No preliminary cleaning of the welds to be inspected is required, since no contact is necessary. Similarly, it shall be possible to inspect the whole of structures to a total cost all...

Etude experimentale de la colonisation de surfaces par les bacteries, en eau de mer circulante ArchiMer
Fera, P; Prieur, D.
Before the building of an (OTEC) power plant, and experimental station was built near the entrance of the Bay of Brest in order to do preliminary studies. Using these facilities, the bacterial colonization of three substrata (stainless steel UB6, aluminium AG4, polycarbonate filters) was studied in an open seawater system, with a speed of 0,7 m s super(-1). The study was performed between May 1983 and May 1984, including seven experiments of 15 days each. Bacteria colonizing the metallic surfaces were counted by scanning electron microscopy, and bacteria colonizing the polycarbonate filters counted by epifluorescence microscopy. On the three substrata, bacterial colonization occurred in three successive stages: initial colonization, sometimes unsteady...

Impact of granular filtration on ultrafiltration membrane performance as pre-treatment to seawater desalination in presence of algal blooms ArchiMer
Sabiri, Nour-eddine; Sechet, Veronique; Jaouen, Pascal; Pontie, Maxime; Masse, Anthony; Plantier, Severine.
To mitigate fouling of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and improve permeate quality, we coupled granular filters (GF) with UF membrane as a pre-treatment for reconstituted seawater in the presence of algal bloom. Mono and bilayer granular filtrations were led at a mean velocity of 10 m h(-1) over a 7-hour period. Both GF gave the same algal cell retention rate (similar to 63%) after 7 hours of filtration. Turbidity reduction rate was 50% for the monolayer filter and 75% for the bilayer filter. Resulting organic matter removal rate was 10% for the monolayer filter and 35% for the bilayer filter. Dissolved organic carbon removal was low (20%) with the bilayer filter and non-existent with the monolayer filter. GF-coupled UF reduced humic acids in the...

Lutte contre les salissures marines : approche par procédés enzymatiques. ArchiMer
Leroy, Celine.
Fouling on marine underwater surfaces causes critical and economic problems such as important material biodamages and industrial performances reduction. We chose to test antifouling potential of enzymatic commercial preparations like hydrolases (proteases, glycosidases and lipases) in order to inhibit the first fouling adhesion step: bacterial biofilm formation. An evaluation test of antifouling properties onto marine bacterial adhesion was designed using a mono-incubation of Pseudoalteromonas sp. D41 in microtiter plate and in sterile natural sea water. This test was adapted to screen agents for bacterial adhesion removal or inhibition activities and allowed to test enzymatic preparations toxicity on non adhered bacteria. Inhibition rates according to...

Methods for microbial biomass, community structure and metabolic activities on surfaces. ArchiMer
White, D.
Microbes in nature are often concentrated on surfaces where they exist in microcolonies of mixed composition. The assay of these mixed microbial consortia by utilizing biochemical components eliminates the problems associated with cultural selectivity of viable counts or the requirement for quantitative release from surfaces required in some microscopic techniques. The assay of cellular components restricted to subsets of the microbial community gives insights into the community structure of the biofilm whereas assay of cellular components common to all cells can be used for biomass estimations. Formation of endogenous storage materials can be utilized as measures of nutritional status and rates of formation or turnover of specific "signatures" from...

Operation and cleaning of ceramic membranes for the filtration of fish press liquor ArchiMer
Perez-galvez, Raul; Guadix, Emilia M.; Berge, Jean-pascal; Guadix, Antonio.
This paper assesses the performance of three ceramic membranes of average pore size 50 nm, 200 nm and 1.4 tan in the treatment of the press liquor resulting from a compaction operation of sardine by-products. To this end, 2 L of pre-filtered press liquor with an average protein content of 44 g/L were filtered during 3 h through the three membranes assayed. Unexpectedly, the membrane of larger pore size, presented the lowest values for the flux of permeate at steady state at 20 L/(m(2) h), while its average protein rejection (77%) was similar to that observed in the membrane of 200 nm. This fact was attributed to the difference in material of its active layer (a-alumina instead of zirconite). The cleaning efficiency of the membranes was assessed by the COD...

Preliminary assessment of the potential for mangrove oyster cultivation in Piraquê-açu river estuary (Aracruz, ES) BABT
Alvarenga,Luciana; Nalesso,Rosebel Cunha.
At Piraquê-açu river estuary, Aracruz, ES, the technical viability of Crassostrea rhizophorae cultivation was determined through monthly measures in shell length and weight. Seeds of C. rhizophorae were put in cages and suspended in rafts. Increase in height and weight (flesh and dry) of the oysters was measured. During ten months (July/98 to May/99), oyster shell reached an average of 37.6 mm in shell height and 3.0 g in flesh weight (the whole animal). High mortality rates were registered and could be related to the high salinity water and to high predation observed, especially by flatworms Stylochophana divae and snails Cymatium parthenopeum, as well as fouling organisms such as barnacles, Serpulidae polychaetes and seed of the same species.

Primer registro de Amphibalanus reticulatus (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Thoracica) para Cuba OceanDocs
Lopeztegui, A.; Varela, C..

Submersion time, depth, substrate type and sampling method as variation sources of marine periphyton ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Trottier, C.; Verdegem, M. C. J.; Hussenot, Jerome.
Periphyton is an additional food source in African and Asian brackish and freshwater fish ponds. The present study was a preliminary assessment of periphyton development on artificial substrates in temperate marine ponds. The effects of submersion time, substrate type, water depth, and total or partial sampling methods on the quantity and quality of periphyton collected, were evaluated. Four types of substrate (W: wooden poles, S: smooth fiber-glass strips, m: mosquito screen (1 mm-mesh) and M: garden netting (5 mm-mesh)) were deployed in a marine pond, and periphyton was collected 15 and 30 days later. The total amount of periphyton per substrate unit was collected as one sample or as 5 sub-samples. Results showed that (i) periphyton biomass in a marine...

Sustainable alternative for the food industry: converting whey and orange juice into a micro-filtered beverage Scientia Agricola
Fagnani,Rafael; Puppio,Ana Amélia Nunes; Zanon,Emely Osti.
ABSTRACT: Enhancing industrial sustainability by converting whey into alternative high value-added products is a scientific trend in food science and technology. However, without other ingredients, rennet, or sour, whey has an unappetizing flavor. This sensory challenge can be overcome by blending it with citrus flavor from orange juice. This study assessed a micro-filtered beverage from whey and orange juice without enzymatic treatment. Four formulations (27:10, 8.6:10, 2.4:10 and 1:10 v/v whey:juice ratio) were processed through a 1.4 μm microfiltration system with four different transmembrane pressures (1, 2, 3, and 4.15 bar) and then stored at 5 °C for 28 days. The micro-filtered beverage was analyzed for physicochemical, sensorial and microbial...
